Design Dilemma: 2 or 3 Pendant Lights Over Off Centered Island???

We can't center the island in front of the stove top and still achieve the size desired. The client also wants the kitchen sink towards the right side of the island to see into the Great Room while doing dishes. Should I put two or three Pendant Lights over the island? Client wants pendants for sure. But either way they don't really have an anchor. I'm stuck!

Maybe one long, rectangular pendant that goes from the right edge of the sink to the same distance away from the edge on the other side of the island. The way the lights hang in your drawings, you won't have task lighting directly over the sink.

Is the plan written in stone? Because to my eye, it appears very crowded and closed in.

That said? A linear fixture, 48 inches, that ignores the need to center.

Client's don't generally know enough to know the consequences of what they "want".

You are in charge of that .

For me? Not loving this..at all. Sorry. The island at 36 inches? Not the best spot for a sink. Start there. Was there another option to the wall blocking the view? Why not a sink at the window? I get the feeling, ( sorry again) that the client had toooo much input, and perhaps, not enough push back. Just a guess. But this is a no , for me. Unless it is in stone right now

Great feedback. The sink was under the window. They want it in the island. The wall with the open shelving cannot be removed unfortunately. We took out the other load bearing wall to build a wall in pantry. Attached are more measurements. I could push the island back a few inches towards the open shelving wall. Right now I have about 43” between island and stove.

42" is the bare minimum we use between island and cabinetry. 48" is better. As for the pendant lights I have no objection to the 3 as you have them place now. The lighting placement (for me) can be independent of the stone, sink, etc. I do agree with other posters that a longer, linear fixture would work as well. Good luck!

Thanks. I am aware the distance should be greater. Trying to balance the back seating too. I also wanted to increase the island overhang to 15”. I’ll move the island back a bit. In turn have to shrink the walk-in pantry so the walkway is consistent. Likely reduce my pantry base cabinets. Cabinet order going in tomorrow. I’ll confirm again placement of sink with the client. This is great folks!! Thank you. Here is a before photo

IMO the space is very crowded and not a good work space . I don't even think sinks need to be at windows since we spend so little time at sinks if we use out DWs properly and to place a sink to look out at the great room really makes no sense . If the stools are in use there is no way to access the stuff behing them all the walkways are too small . Are you an actual KD or just an ID Kitchen design begins with function and clients need to be guided by that function . Often clients need to be told when something they want will just not work.IMo first fix the function then worry about the pendants .

. The sink was under the window. They want it in the island.............................

UNTIL THEY REALIZE: There will be water on the kid sitting near it. That the island is too narrow for a sink, I wouldn't do it on less than 48 inches. It doesn't take that long to clean up a meal. Look at something else.

You know the words I dread and avoid?

" She should have known, and she should have TOLD me"

Or I make them sign, " I was advised not to do this whatever bad idea I have"

Patricia, I think the consensus is the same. I could pull out the peninsula lowers to the right of the shelf wall. I have extra flooring. Again that wall must stay. We can’t even header that one. Bummer. That might open things up a bit in terms of crowding.

Thanks again Jan. That will save in plumbing costs too. Always receptive when lowering costs. I’ll rework and get the new layout to the client. At least I’ve solved my lighting problem today.

I'd take every stick of cabinet off the wall that must stay, or reduce to a fifteen inch storage at best.

Widen the island to a better proportion, even with NO sink on it. That width is not enough to support the length.

You have your "work" cut out for you. : )
