Two 25" wide mirrors too cramped above 72" vanity with 3 sconces?

Planning out a bathroom remodel. Going to get a 72" vanity, it will butt up to the wall and the other side will butt up next to the glass shower door. The mirrors I'm thinking of getting are 25" wide. I would like to put up 3 sconces, but will it look too cramped? I'm assuming I would center the mirror on the sink and faucet, but all of that is tbd since I haven't purchased anything yet and don't have exact measurements.

I am not a designer but made this little mood board and tried to draw an idea on graph paper.

Also, I have picture of a bathroom from a remodel that has our same model of house and realized the side wall may look strange if it's painted white right next to the tiled vanity wall. Does it make sense to tile this wall as well?

I included my mood board idea, my graph, and the picture of the bathroom with the same footprint as ours to show how close the side wall is to the vanity.

Thanks for your thoughts and input!

I started buying things for my remodel five years before it happened. My contractor was tied up on a commercial job that was never-ending and my husband was burned out by previous remodeling, so I just kept shopping and planning. I ended up with two huge tube sconces from Pottery Barn and two big medical cabs from Restoration Hardware. When I finally found the shower I wanted, it meant the vanity moved across the floor to the other wall. Now, the big sconce on the left would be intruding into the space of a wall niche that was going to replace a small in-wall med cab on that side wall. My only solution was to put the tube sconces above the med cabs, not on either side of them, as I originally planned.

Here is my 60” wide vanity with two 21.25" wide, 34" tall med cabs. My counter is only 16” deep deep, so if it looks out of proportion, that is why. I would think that with a whole foot more than I had in length, and having only 7.5” more in mirror width, you should be able to find sconces slim enough to look good. I have 11 - 12 inches between my mirrors.

If you find a set of sconces that are not so slim that you really love, you can always downsize your mirrors. Mine are plenty wide enough. I have never thought , ”gee, I wish these were wider mirrors.” I really do recommend med cabs. The toiletry storage is just perfect and when you make them both open toward the center, you get a great way to see all sides of your head by opening both and looking at the front of your head in one side and looking at the reflection in the other mirror to see the back.

I cannot guess how many different layouts I did on graph paper, like you did. If you keep your measurements exact as you do the layouts with all of your components, you should be able to see if the sink faucets and vanity doors stay centered where you need them to be. I would look for the lights, first, then the vanity. Once you have chosen the ones you want, the mirror size can be adjusted to fit. After all, can’t you get custom mirrors cut at a local glass shop if you end up needed a size you can’t find?

Have fun with this. think of it as a jigsaw puzzle you want to solve, except that you have the power to adjust the layout with custom mirror sizes if you must.

I would not worry about tiling the side wall. It will look fine either way, but more modern and clean with just the back wall tiled. I was going for an old-fashioned look, so tiled to wainscott height on all walls.

@Nancy in Mich Thank you for your input! This was all encouraging, ha! Great point, I can find different mirrors, if need be. Love your tiled wainscoting.

I would worry the most about the size of the sinks, where the doors are on the cabinets so the sinks can be centered over them and the mirrors then centered over the sinks. That's a lot of moving parts and you want to avoid ending up like this with the mirrors offset from the sinks in order to squeeze in 3 sconces. I much prefer the example you posted with the light bars above the wider mirrors. It looks spacious and uncrowded. There are some very pretty light bars available.

Both of these would drive me crazy with the elements not lined up.

    Hello Danielle -

We love your design concept and have done similar layouts in our bathroom designs recently and in progress. I am sharing two very different styles we are in progress with currently that have a similar vanity/sconce layout. The vanity will determine your mirror selection and then you can select 3 relatively narrow sconces or consider a framed sheet mirror with the sconces mounted directly to the glass. The first rough mock-up below is one like this that we are currently in progress on developing.

If you do select the 25" wide mirrors, (because that width aligns with your sink and faucet and base well), that leaves 22" overall for 3 evenly spaced wall sections. These would each measure about 7.33" width of wall width per sconce. For 3 sconces you would need to search your selections with a filter and a width of 5" or less. Here are two sconces that fit that criteria to demonstrate that you can make it work. I agree with the commenter olychick below that the mirror, sink and door seams need to line up for aesthetic harmony, and there is a lot of beautiful bath light bars to choose from these days that would look better then poor alignment or overcrowding. Your design concept is gorgeous so you are on the right track!

Point blank? 72 inches is not enough length for what you want to do. It's way too crowded. It would be great with one sink, one mirror, two sconces! THIS? Sure it works, the vanity is about 90 inches!

It can work with two sinks, two mirrors, sconce ABOVE mirrors and centered on each sink faucet

The first thing? Plumbing drains, where the are, etc. Meaning a layout plan, exact inches everywhere.

Personally I prefer the single sink concept, even for a couple. So I prefer Jan's ideas. However, a couple ways to light cramped space include a backlight mirror and/or ceiling-hung pendants. I don't know why the attached shows both at once. I prefer just the backlit mirror. They come with nice features light touch less controls to change light temperature or to dim. They come heated to eliminate fog. They come in different shapes.

@LS Design Studio your 2nd example with 3 sconces does not have the same cabinet configuration as the OP, so it looks like your measurements might not work

I would prefer side sconces for makeup application. If your width is too small- as Jan indicates - eliminate one sconce. Overhead lighting is the worst for making up.

This question cannot be answered until you have selected the vanity and know the locations of the centerlines of the sinks and the sink widths. Only then will it be possible to size the mirrors and know whether you can use two with three sconces.

@wdccruise this is exactly what I am quickly figuring out!

Very nice! Glad you posted your 'after' pics; it's always fun to see!

Dee T your bathroom turned out, absolutely lovely. Could you please share what width mirrors you ended up buying

  • last year

Hi Cristinika, thank you! We got them from Ballard Designs.

  • last year

@Dee T how many inches of the countertop is the top of the backsplash? How high is the bottom of the mirror? Can you see yourself in the mirror? How tall are you?

Hi Dee, i have a very similar bathroom layout. Can you please share the dimensions of the shower, including the width of the shower door? Does the shower door interfere with the vanity? Your bathroom turned out beautiful!

  • last year

@Joana Thanks! The shower curb is 63.5"x60". The glass door is 28" wide. We didn't necessarily want that big of a shower but we were arranging it around the window. It's worked out great, though it is a lot of glass to clean. :) The shower door swings both ways and doesn't interfere with the vanity.

It turned out beautiful. What size are your sinks and hiw many inches of counter do you have on the outer sides of the sink? What is the name of your sconces and mirrors, and where did you get them? Also, what is your wall color? Sorry for so many questions. im currently redougn my bathroom as well and am so stressed about it. Nothing oit of several thungs have gone right with redoing other parts of my house and I’ve had it. Seriously, nothing has gone right out of several projects. Crappy contractors. My bathroom is my final project for now.

Dee- the update you posted is so helpful and your bathroom is gorgeous! Can you tell me is your finished photo still with a 72” vanity and are those indeed 25” mirrors?

i only have space for a 66” vanity but have 21” mirrors picked out. with the smaller mirros that would make my vanity space for 3 sconces similiar to yours and that nakes me think incan do 3 sconces!

    Thank you for your help.
