This is a nice place. That rug you have now is too small. At least the two front legs need to be on the rug, Use can get FLOR carpet squares but they are expensive. You can also cut the rug with a utility knife so it fits around the corner,. It is hidden so no one will notice. The sofa size looks fine but you really should get a 74". It's a little too wide for this space. I'm sure you can find a rug that will fit that is a little bigger than the one you have.

Do you think an 8x10" rug would be too wide? It'd basically go all the way to my window. Or if I centered it, jut out into the hallway.

Would a 8" X 10' fit if you placed it with the long side along the window wall? If the standard sizes don't work, go to a carpet store and get a remnant trimmed to the right size and the edges bound.

@kandrewspa Because 8" is too wide, would need to get it trimmed like you mentioned. Not the worst. 10" takes me from wall to about 12 inches from front legs of entertainment unit.

@BeverlyFLADeziner I really love the idea of angling the rug. Adds so much more interest.

I actually just flipped the orientation of the space from this previously in order to fit a desk. The width of the sofa width unfortunately didn't give me much space for a desk.

That said, could I still use this layout in current orientation? The black & white is perfect. Was struggling to find the right carpet to contrast my sofa.

For later use when you might be living somewhere else, make sure the rug is at least 2 feet wider than the sofa, so it will look nice if you decide to straighten and put it under the sofa in another location.

Why is the desk in the living room? Wouldn’t the bedroom be an option for it’s placement?

I live in a junior one bedroom so the dimensions of my bedroom didnt allow for it And if I did get it to fit, Id be staring at the wall. In this case, it looks out into the city which is much more pleasing to look at & work from on the daily.

The rug on diagonal idea is really great for your space. Lends visual interest, and I also think it makes the space look bigger.

You could flank the tv with some wall sconces. There is a way to adapt the hardwired ones so that you don’t need to hardwire them. With remote control puck lights. I’ll find the article and post it here.

Another option is to use a cowhide rug. You don't need precision in placement.

So Sorry, But The strict rectangle rug shape on a diagonal makes NO sense unless the furniture angles with it. Looks exactly as what happened, The rug size not suited to space. WAH

However, as also suggested above??Get a black and white zebra hide- ( any hide! ) play with the position !! You can even trim it. Double up and layer as you change directions! Freedom is again, the irregular shape and iconic blast of "pattern"

I like the idea of a "hide" it looks great and solves the issue

Most flooring stores that carry and install carpet will offer custom sized area rugs. Pick the carpet, they bind all the edges, any shape, any size and it is not prohibitively expensive.

At a point, it's about more than the rug.

I'd work at the kitchen table, Clean up the wires, clear out some small clutter which is evident in a few places and jumps out in a small space. Lost the desk if at all possible.

Get a bigger coffee table. The sofa is the heavyweight here, unbalanced by all else being lightweight or small. Bold on the floor will help, and as just stated: ) above. Little adjustments - big results.
