Florida beach house living room design help

last modified: 2 years ago

We just bought a new home in Florida and we're trying to use what we have while adding in a few things to make it more beachy (in not a cheesy way) and cohesive. The living area is one big space- kitchen/dining/living room. The walls are already painted sea salt and we're keeping the white tile floors for now. I already have the sofa, swivel chairs, and sofa table pictured on the mood board.

I can't decide if I should stay neutral in the rug (like pictured) or go with a pattern. I like the pillows and lamp pictured for color but nothing is wowing me. Is it all still too neutral? Should I look for more patterns? I still need an ottoman, tv console, rug, pillows, art, etc.

Not sure why 2 photos aren't showing up. I added a comment showing the space from the previous owner.

I would do a light/faded patterned area rug to ground the space and soften the tile floor.

    everything else looks grreat!

    @Lyn Nielson Thank you.

This was another rug I was trying out (too much color? too bold?) but I keep coming back to the neutral and then I thought I was being too simple. Plus the stark white tile floor is not ideal with these muted tones.

I love the second rug, but you're right, it doesn't look great with the white tile floors. I think Lyn was onto something with a blue-gray. Keep looking.

Try to search for a rug tgst has soft- ish colors that you like but includes some bits of white. Might end up too ice cream/ sherbet - looking , but if you include some wood furniture & accessories & some other natural materials that balances the sweetness.
At any rate, looking at rugs might help you find a color palette you love. Same for throw pillows- pretty easy to find some ( or at least one) with one of your accent colors + white and even whites and ivory ( sofa color?) together, especially stripes which can look good in beach house.
I am a broken record on looking for removable, washable pillow covers and getting your preferred inserts- not as cheap as discount store fast- decor pillows but last better, clean, find cottons and linens which are refreshing in warm climate decor, and you can change things up since storing a pillow cover takes up very little room. Don’t rush to instant decorating- hunting for good items is part of the fun!

@ HU-457756048 Thanks for the ideas. I hear you about sherbet. I was trying to stay away from that and go a bit bold/richer but then bold isn't working for me either! Also, the pillows I love are a velvet fabric which I thought wouldn't be ideal for south Florida and you're right about the cotton/linens being more refreshing. I'm trying not to rush and yet I feel so paralyzed with indecision that I feel like if I don't force a choice I'll just go with nothing. Usually, I know exactly what I want- throw it together, and love it. I'm struggling this time for some reason.

Since you already bought a cream or very light colored sofa,  And your tiles are white,  I would go with a deep , bold color for the rug or its all going to kinda blend in together.  I have the same Florida flooring but chose black leather furniture for contrast

@Chrissy Anne I didn't buy the sofa, we already had it and I'm trying to work with it (along with the chairs and sofa table). But I did just try a bolder color rug and I like it- my only concern is that it feels like I'm limiting myself more in palette versus having a rug with lots of colors to pull from.

I like Chrissy’s observation. I have seen a number of more geometric rugs with a darker neutral - black or charcoal- plus cream plus truer white. In Houzz discussions somewhere. You might search Rug discussions just to see a slew of pictures. Very likely could find with a touch of accent color BUT if you get a rug in stronger neutrals you can surely find pillows with those neutrals plus some color- you can adjust the proportions in your fabric choices to emphasize more color vs more neutral. Plus, art.
Pillows will be easier to find to go with rug than vice versa.
Don’t think of it as paralysis - just building your inspo or Pinterest files before hitting Buy Now.

I wouldn’t go dark, especially with the white floor tiles.

A soft light grey patterned rug is a good choice to help tie in your grey chairs.

Given your light console table, I’d continue in that direction. Bring in the seagrass shade in art and cushions.

Love what Maureen posted. The wood tables, etc. bring in warmth that is much needed to bring this room together.

Have you considered a wool sisal rug? That could help with the "not over the top" beachy feel.

Those are good example pics. Partly, it’s the natural - looking fiber against tile that works better than more formal antique- looking or oriental design- might be different with terra cotta tile but the white reads more casual, though quite right for the locale.

@Maureen I love your ideas and that's the look I was originally going for. My chairs are actually brown, like a tweed brown. It's hard to tell in the photos.

I also already have 2 round wood tables with black iron bases (added them to the mock up.) Not sure they're staying there, but it does bring some warmer wood in. I love your tv stand choices and while I love a coffee table, I feel like I need an upholstered ottoman for in front of the couch, but I can't find one I like color-wise.

I did find a rug that I love the look of. In fact, we have a large front window with an arched top that mimics the pattern on this rug. I think this might be the one.

This is the window that mimics the rug pattern

@freedomplace1 Ohhh, that's pretty. I was leaning toward the blues and I like that it isn't too much pattern. We were commenting at the same time and I was saying that I think I found one I like but I'm going to mock the one you suggested and see how it looks as I wanted color vs too monotone. Thank you!

    You’re welcome ! :)

I see what you mean ... and I  get that you need to work with what you have...  or you could just skip the rug, its hot down here lol .

Would suggest that you stay with neutral like the rug and sofa and brink in color with your accessories to achieve a breezy Florida style.

Thanks, everyone! I went with the neutral rug and it's already been delivered (to our primary home, not our Florida home.) Then I found these ottomans for $21 each! (ordered 2) I thought for sure the price was a mistake but they were just delivered today and they are very nice quality! I will place them in front of the sofa. They are a little 'beach decor cliche' for me but they bring in a lot of the colors I want to spread around and I ordered 2 pillows of the matching print for the couch as well. (for an unbelievable $7.99 each!)

If anyone is interested, the ottomans were ordered from Target online and they have other prints available. The thicker navy stripe called to me too and I may get one for a bedroom. The quality is great and I can't believe the price. It says they are 91% off. Not sure if links are allowed, but I'll try to link it.
