anyone know where in Cali I can get a Bearss Lemon tree/plant?

Hello!

I'm not in a hurry, still a bunch of other things I need to get to.

Also, I may get a Eureka and plant that in the meanwhile. (Yet again I have managed to be kind of late in lemon-shopping. Oh well.) I can find a Bearss lime but I am not on limes right now.

Also, does anyone around here have one, and how is it doing?

Happy Holidays, you-all!!

Pretty much anywhere. Lowe's usually has a large Citrus selection.

And Costco always carries them in Spring

Thanks! I am not sure if those will be the same kind, I'll have to call first I guess.

Bearss is the most common lime sold, it should be in stock everywhere

Much of southern California has a citrus quarantine due to HLB disease. Nurseries in the quarantine area will not be selling any citrus plants. https://ucanr.edu/sites/ACP/

That is simply not true that the sale of trees is banned.

The quarantine is for home trees, not commercial sales of trees within the same Zone, which are required to be disease-free.

Bearss lime tree should be easily to find on the Internet under Four Wind Growers.

Yeah, I have seen Bearss limes - I am looking for lemon though. (I mean, someday it would be nice to have both ... and, really, I'd like another avocado at some point too. We used to have one and it was just a-mazing. Free food!!)

And it is true, we have to be careful about new bugs. Though, I would expect a retailer to be on top of that for me.

What exactly do you mean by a "Bearss lemon" then if you didn't want a lime? I've never heard of that

Maybe you might need to order some seeds of both of them from citrus seed companies    but what do I know I'm no expert this might be the only way yu can get them because they are not exactly common

    Look what I just found:

Bearss lemon. Apparently it's a Florida cultivar, but they'd still have to vet it to get it in CA. I wouldn't hold my breath. :(

It says it originated in Italy so why don't you just buy an Italian Lemon, like a Feminello? Costco sells them almost every year.

What is it about this particular lemon that makes you want it?

You can buy a citrus tree and bring it in to the quarantine area, but nurseries in the quarantine area aren't selling them.

    Linda Ann

That is not my experience, can you name the city and nursery where this is occurring?

sautesmom Sacramento - All around Orange County. Armstrong Nurseries don't sell citrus at the stores in the quarantine areas, and neither do any other nurseries in the boundaries. CDFA checks. If you are in Sacramento, you are not experiencing this. Quarantine areas are in parts of Orange, Riverside, San Diego, and Los Angeles Counties. https://ucanr.edu/sites/ACP/Distribution_of_ACP_in_California/

It's not that I don't understand what a quarantine is-- it's that a quarantine does not prohibit sales of clean product within the quarantine area, it prohibits moving product FROM a quarantine area to outside of it.

If they are choosing not to sell Citrus, it's not because that's the law.

Thanks for the link, tom1328732! - I'll have to watch that site and see if they get more.

I read about Bearss lemons online - I have forgotten where now, but it could have been on houzz. I suppose it is risky to think that something would do well here just bc it does well in Florida.

As for the quarantine issue, I really haven't been going to the nursery lately. I've mostly been looking online. I suppose I could stop in and see if they'd order me one. Maybe they have connections. If I find out anything, I'll comment here.

Might ask at San Gabriel Nursery. They seem to get things others dont have.

Thanks, kittymoonbeam, I should try there - I've heard of them for other plants I want, such as michelia (iirc).

Also, it is a good idea to look at other Italian lemons. I sort of have been, already. I think though that what I will do in the meanwhile is just grab me a nice Eureka. This other type might take a while.

    From the San Gabriel Nursery's website;

CDFA Working to Save California’s Citrus!

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) is a pest that acts as a carrier or vector spreading huanglongbing (HLB), a devastating disease of citrus trees. This bacterial disease is transmitted to healthy trees by the psyllid after it feeds on infected plant tissue. As we are now in one of the Asian Citrus Psyllid/Huanglongbing Disease Quarantine zones, we are not able to sell any citrus trees until further notice.

For more information on the regulation and quarantine boundaries, please click on the following California Department of Food & Agriculture link https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/citrus/pests_diseases/acp/regulation.html
