Ida: New Mexican Retablos

last modified: 2 years ago

Sorry it took so long to get back to you! This new rescue pup is keeping me/us so busy!

I looked at Lynn Garlick’s website this morning and her retablos are wonderful! And so are her prices. I want this one in a large, although after forty years living here in New Mexico, I already have so much art. Still, great art is hard to resist for me.

As it is, I actually have only one Retablo (can you believe it?!?) , this one of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers.

I do have a painted Metate, though, that’s more like a retablo. She hangs above the dining room windows. Sorry, crummy photo of it.

So which are your favs of Garlick’s? We were originally planning to head up to Taos this coming weekend to celebrate our 40th anniversary (but are now just having dinner in Santa Fe at Geronimo’s). Probably a good thing, as I most likely could not buy just one (LOL)!

Thank you Lynn, and absolutely no worries! Does the new rescue pup have a name yet (or did I just miss that post)? Hope you're having lots of fun with the new addition!

That Garlick St. Francis is the one I liked best as well! (Great minds!) So charming -- although, like you, I'm already on art overload and walking around the house last night trying to decide where I'd put it was not fruitful. Still, it is hard to resist at that price

I also found these on Etsy which are hand-painted (Mexican) dough bowls, and I really like them a lot too. A bit pricier, but not bad.

I especially like their version of San Pasqual.

I absolutely love your charming San Isidro (the angel leading the goats is adorable!) and metate! They're just wonderful. I can envision an entire wall filled with painted retablos, actually ... But of course, I haven't had an entire blank wall in a very long time.

Happy 40th anniversary! A celebration at Geromino's sounds amazing!

    Oh, these colors

What are Lynn Garlick's retablos made of?

I agree, Bunny, the colors are fantastic! OK, I changed my mind, I like that one best, Ida.

I think Lynn Garlick's retablos are pine board with a print of her work mounted on top. I understand she does do originals as well, but didn't see them on her website.

I love, love, love that one Bunny! The colors are divine. (No pun intended!)

That cobalt sky and the golds/oranges. I'm in love. Plus Francis is my favorite saint. My cats concur.

I'm loving this guy. This is a larger piece, 23" tall. (But WHERE would I put it?)

Oh jeez, I just bought it.

Did you really? Hooray! The one in the colors you liked? He's wonderful! Where will you display him?

Ok Bunny, you owe us a pic once you get it and hang it!!

You do know this makes me want a Francis even more now, don't you? Power of suggestion or something, maybe. Ha! I'm glad you ordered him!

Hahaha, Ida, it's payback for the Kitchen Aid glass mixing bowl you got that made me think I had to have one, too. Well, I have one. Have I used it? Don't judge.

This Francis is approx. 75 years old. He was my grandmother's, then my mom's, now mine. He has lived outdoors his entire life. Whenever I plant something in the little planter, the birds tear it out. I've tried over and over. I have given up. I probably just ought to put bird seed in there and let them have their way.

Oooooh, the KA bowl! Ha! Yep, I remember that!

I love your little vintage Francis in the birdhouse. What a lovely way to display him, where his fine feathered friends can gather. And it's sweet how he's been passed down in your family.

I just bought this San Pascual. I nearly bought a little painting of the patron saint of all things kitchen when we visited El Santuario de Chimayo on our way to Taos a few years back, but for whatever reason passed it by. This guy is small enough that I can find a spot for him. I think he has a sweet face ... but he may look a bit like a young Elvis.

    Nothing wrong with that. 😊

    ::sob::

    It didn't work out.

St. Francis arrived yesterday. Everything about him was perfect, except for his face. I know, right?

The piece has an overall rustic look and that's fine. But his face had areas of thin or missing paint and that was just the worst place for distressing.

I knew the sale said no exchanges no returns so I wrote to the shop owner, attached a pic, and asked if they had any suggestion for how I might touch it up a bit myself. I immediately had a lovely reply, return label, and instructions to ship back for a full refund.

I'm so sorry it didn't work out, but if I'd seen it in a store with that flaw for that price, I'd have skipped it.

Ida, I hope your piece is everything you hope for.

Oh dear! I'm so sorry the piece just wasn't quite right and am glad you're able to return him. The seller did seem very gracious when she contacted me about the shipping delay. Mine should arrive today, so now I'm especially eager to see what he looks like.

Ida, mine shipped and arrived 10+ days earlier than expected. I don't know why I was expecting a large, heavy parcel, but I was surprised to see a rather flat, lightweight package on my doorstep. I was thinking rustic bowl (i.e, pottery) and it's shallow and made of lightweight wood. The colors were true (golds against cobalt blue) but alas, the marks on his face were the first thing I noticed.

Please share photos of yours in its place in your home when it arrives.

My San Pascual arrived and I love him! I'm not sure this is his final resting place, but I do like the way he looks with the other items on this column between the kitchen and dining area.

Ida, that looks fabulous! What an intriguing piece of art!

Ida, I'm so glad you love your San Pascual. He looks good there.

Thanks! I am not a religious person, but am very fond of this type of iconography. There is a tiny chapel, a mission for the Mescalero Apache, that is a few miles from one of our favorite hiking areas in New Mexico. Can't believe I didn't know it was there until recently, but I can't wait to visit when we go back this spring. The colorful, artistic vibe is fantastic!

I am a religious person and I love all types of iconography, and especially the kind you show in your photos. I have a hodge podge in my office, of all places, that would look weird and out of place scattered about the house, but collected in one area, I love the look.
