Waht a bummer, ramona. That letter from DA seems confusing, is it that their stock is sub-standard, or the variety does not grow sufficiently well in the US? I have to think the former, since some of us did get our plants. If it’s the latter, I’d want to try it out for myself, especially if you live west of the Cascades, which is a gentle climate much like England, but nicer.

Ben. I live east of the Cascades and I have no problem with any Austin I have grown over many years. PAoK grew too well, but we'll forget about that one. They love it here, and I'm sure Bring Me Sunshine would grow perfectly fine in my garden. What a stupid excuse DA gives. Also, black spot does occur west of the Cascades. Kristine in Medford just got some on her roses. It's been extra wet there. West of the Rockies, Austins grow better in the US than in England. Diane

Thats so sad to hear! I got a Bring Me Sunshine a few days ago with my order. I remember this happened last year with Munstead Wood. A few people got it, but many like myself got that same letter of apology for bad stock.

Last year I ordered Gertrude and Munstead own-root because they would ship immediately. I would have preferred bare-root, but that wouldn’t ship until following spring. DA often seems so capricious with their decisions and I just wanted a plant ASAP rather than leave the future in their fumbling hands.

Of course you grow Austins beautifully, so do others East of the Cascades. I only meant that West of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest is particlarily gentle in the summer, and reminds a bit of England (again, but nicer!)

Ben, now I see how wise it was to keep it! Yes, it's planted. It's exactly what happened to me last year. I had ordered Munstead Wood and was cut off. This season, I have ordered two of them and wrote DA an email, saying that I do not want to miss it again!

Also, I just wanted to share my positive experience with planting bare roots. We've had very unstable weather this year, so I decided to cover freshly planted bare roots with pots. They've been growing like crazy!

Story of my life. Planning to buy about 20 roses for a new bed and stop at 100 roses total, but made all excuses to buy 42 roses this season. Hope nothing interesting will show up in two Nurseries I am planning to visit, but checking almost every day!!

Noseometer, haha they are different enough to justify both in my opinion (or lets hope they are once we see how they perform in our gardens). I’m glad to hesr they have both leafed out for you! thank you, I’m not giving up on my Wildeve..she came with an abundance of canes..maybe too many and that’s part of the problem? The weather here has been up and down with clouds and rain and not overly hot yet here in California. She needs to pick up before the weather gets too hot!

@Echo_Texas_zone9a I’m sorry to hear your JLA has been underperforming but I think the fact that it has started to push out leaves is a great sign! Last year when my Jubilee celebration died on me, they provided me with a refund after I e-mailed them regarding the failure and provided photos.

I am glad that it has leaves and looks to be growing now. This is my slowest growing DA I’ve ever planted.

My Carding Mill is leaps and bounds the fastest of this years bareroots.

So interesting how some break dormancy and leaf out much faster than others! Carding Mill and Wildeve look amazing, I’m sure JLA will catch up in no time!

My bare roots from DA are all being a bit slow this year. All of them are leafing out, but none of them very vigorously. I got two Desdemona, a Gabriel Oak, Eustacia Vye and Silas Marner. My Desdemonas seem the most vigorous, but nothing amazing yet. I blame it on the cool weather. I accidentally ordered a second Eustacia Vye and since my MIL was here visiting when my bare roots arrived, I sent one home with her. She lives near Dallas TX and she sent me a picture yesterday of hers. It’s definitely ahead of mine, so pretty sure it’s weather making the difference.

Dallas is ahead of my NorCal too, I think it’s the lattitude. My friends in Dallas have been sending me pics of their fully blooming plants. Best of all , most of the RRD infested Knock Out plantings have died out, and it’s much less a problem there now.

I think I have just over 150 varieties. I purposefully don’t know the exact number so people don’t look at me like I’m crazy to have so many. I look forward to pictures of all your garden and new roses!

I’m with you on that, Ben. My children are already making comments like, “How many roses does one woman need?” I don’t know.

There's one particular place I'm keeping an eye on that is supposed to have 3-gallon Austins for $39 this year, whereas all other 3-gallon roses were $24 last year. It might seem crazy not to buy everything from them at that price.

I think it's a good idea to stop counting and just go for it. Also, please refrain from asking me about the size of the lot where I'm growing roses

Got my DA roses today and hellelujah they look great! Nothing like last years terrible crop! Much more in line with size and health from prior years💃🏻

I called DA regarding my order for Bring Me Sunshine (they aren't shipping it this year due to quality standards). I exchanged it for Roald Dahl and they said my zone will open up on April 8 and I should receive my full order by mid April.

All my roses are leafing out right now, so these DA bare roots are going to be behind by several weeks.

Got a chance to take a look at the list of roses will be available soon in my local nursery, they have Bring me Sunshine! For those who missed it at DA might be a second chance.

Finally, finally, finally got the email from DA that my order(s) are being packaged and will go out this month! Most of my roses are already leafed out and setting buds with some about to bloom already but at least here in Seattle it‘s pretty easy to baby them through the summer even if they start out a bit behind.

I’ll have to pot them up anyway since we decided to start construction on our new deck and I don't dare plant anything in the area until that is done.

They are here! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve gotten bare roots and I had forgotten how ridiculous they can be when you first get them. I’m mostly happy with them except for Silas Marner which clearly has a spider mite infestation starting - I’ve got them all hosed off and soaking in quarantine now and will keep them separated for a week or two after I get them potted up.

I got a bunch of roses with their roots cut down drastically. I can't even remember which companies gave me those.

Got my replacements for elizabeth and eustachia vye and the graham thomas i ordered two years ago but wasnt available. The elizabeth is small again but at least the shank isnt as long. they shipped my teasing georgia i bought this year separately.

ps - they came two weeks earlier this year which is keeping line with our much milder winter this year

Your roses look good Josg! If you look at my earlier post in this thread you’ll see mine were all over the place in size but all are healthy and leafing out well now.

I also had mold on a few of mine, I just hosed them off and wiped them down they don’t seem any worse for it now 2 weeks later. I also had spider mites on one but so far after keeping them all hosed down daily for two weeks I’ve not seen them again so fingers crossed!

This is my James L Austin bare root planted 2/28/24. not long after planting it leafed out and some of the leaves turned brown ans shriveled up.

Then some other healthy leaves came out. The other bare roots were a foot tall and covered in leaves or even buds at this time.

Today: two of the canes are brown and one is starting to turn brown . there js some new leaf growth on one of the canes that is small and red little leaflets.

All the other roses in this bed have either bloomed out already or are covered in buds.

What would you do with this? Trim the brown off? Email David Austin? Have you had any that struggled this much ao early on and still ended up doing well? this is over two months of growth.

I would take a picture, trim off all the brown and email the picture to DA

My wildeve is finally pushing out growth after i scraped off the outer edges of the crisped brown leaves, added more soil around the graft, and moved her container to a slightly shadier location.

@Echo_Texas - It‘s worth contacting DA. They are very good about honoring their warranty.

I had a similar situation when I got my bare root Scentuous. It took a long time to leaf out (more than a month), then soon began dying, the leaves shriveling. It did recover, but that took more months, and it died way back before it started to grow again.

@KrystalW 9b SoCal- yay! Finally. I’m glad mine is growing, so at least that‘s a sign that its not Wildeve itself, but you must have gotten a bad plant. (Photobomb by La Paz hippeastrum). Good luck! please share photos when it blooms!

I received Gabriel Oaks 2 weeks ago and Bring Me Sunshine a week ago. Gabriel Oaks has green healthy canes-medium size-niceeeee!

Bring Me Sunshine has tall very thick green, but black thorns & few black sm tinted marks on canes. I didn’t like black thorns or tinted marks-so oruned canes shorter. BMSunshine is a vigorous grower so it will bounce back. It’s soaking on porch. I have seen greener thorned rises-prefer it, but guess it will grow well anyway. I have seen it have gorgeous roses before! I hear it’s an abundant performer! !

I ordered Munstead Wood few weeks ago. Wonder when it will ship? Shipping confirmation says ”From early May…”

I have four DA roses I rec'd yesterday that I had intended to put in 20 gallon grow bags (20W x 16D), but two have roots about 2' long. Will trimming the roots harm the roses, and is this size too large for a plant with shorter roots and too small for those with longer roots?

Last year, my Roald Dahl bareroot didn't make it, and I had trimmed the roots to fit the container. My husband was looking forward to this rose and was pretty sad when it didn't pull through. I'm probably being overly nervous, but I really don't want to kill it. Any advice would be much appreciated. :)

Maybe you could leave the long rooted ones alone and plant them in your 20 gal bags and put the smaller plants in 5 gal bags to start and move them up as they grow.

Emmie, can you wrap the long root around in the bag? It’s not ideal but I often have to do this with bare roots that go in containers and they seem to be fine years later. I try to only trim the roots if they are broken or damaged.

They refunded my James L Austin and said it looks like it is dying.

Maybe I missed a pic or post. Did anyone order/received any standards this year. I Roald Dahl wasn't healty so I shovel pruned it. OOS for this season. Hopefully I can get another order in or maybe they will release a Boscobel Standard (wishful thinking eh)

Dying , yes! I’m glad you received a refund. The big week freeze in March was very much a surprise to many roses. It could have caused that roses later decline. Or another issue.

After that March big nation wide-freeze week, at first my roses looked ok; but 1-2 months later leaves came out brown , dry, and some canes finally turned brown/black. Last week I trimmed off a long black cane which was obvious frost damage, that I saw in April end & beginning of May, but took almost 2 months to turn dark. Growers won’t see the damage after a big frost right away, it comes out much later as rose tries to grow. As it warmed up to 65-70F most of time I finally saw the damage as it grew.

My new Wildeve opened its first bloom.

I wonder why this rose isn’t more popular? Cupped pale pink blooms paling to blush outer petals, strong fragrance.

Wedgewood Rose opened its first bloom. Pinker than Wildeve (which is warmer in color), wider internodes, and fragrance is not as sweet. It smells similar to Marie Pavie.
