add modern touches to kitchen

Hello,
We are currently looking at new vinyl flooring for all of downstairs and adding some modern touches to our kitchen. Below I attached 2 photos of our current kitchen: brierwood stained Shrock maple cabinets, travertine tumble tile, Dunn Edward Creamy Cameo wall color, granite Giallo Ornamental dark with cream, cool grays I see come light gray blues, dark grey/black veins, brown/rust specs with gold/ yellow background. I also attached an inspirational pictures.

This is some thoughts I had:

Tweaks of cabinets:
-ordering new the upper cabinet doors from the manufacturer -rectangular (eliminating arches).

  • either eliminating the upper corner cabinets all together or do glass insert there.

  • do glass insert doors above the hood or eliminating cabinet altogether and do a more modern hood-fan as in inspiration pics.

Paint (not sure what color):

  • island (& maybe the breakfast bar a different color)

-paint cabinets below & above the stove top same color as island.

Wall paint? I like what I have but maybe need to revisit.

Backsplash. I still like it and not sure I want the pain of removing it or cost but attached a possible one I really like.

Flooring (currently marble)
Looking at lighter color as in inspirational picture or a medium brown.

Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated. ☺️

if the layout works I would look at floor /counter/backsplash . Leave the cabinets. Probably leave the hood. A new backsplash being on the far wall could give you a nice new focus. I wouldnt change the hood for the purpose of the looks of the hood as what you have looks fine..as long as it is functioning well. Do you need some under cab task lighting ..a pendant above the small island ? and maybe a couple above the peninusla ??? the floor/counters/backsplash together would be a substantial summ but you could get better coordination by changing an element ......is budget known?

This is far from the ugliest kitchen I have seen on this forum. The arches on the upper cabinets aren't that pronounced. Some styles look a lot more dated. If it were me I wouldn't do anything to it. Maybe you just don't like it (maybe it wasn't your choice - did you buy the house recently?) but it looks like it's in good shape. If you just don't like it, save your money for a complete redo at a later date. I agree with the other commenters that what you have currently goes together well. You will have difficulty replacing one part without making another part look worse. Putting expensive new counters on old cabinets is rarely a good idea, and it's hard to replace a tile floor without removing the cabinets. People sometimes put wood down on top and then you run the risk that your dishwasher and frig could be trapped such that you won't be able to get it out to repair or replace it. That's what the previous owners of our house did.

Another one who likes it quite well "as is." But I understand wanting a change sometimes. How about new hardware -- replace the knobs, using bars as in your inspiration picture. And if you can, replace the side of your island that currently looks like two doors, with one smooth panel. Buy a nice runner type rug in colors you like.

How is the lighting -- do you have enough? Your inspo pic shows a fancy pendant -- maybe add a pendant or two, either over your island or over the peninsula.

I really do like the materials you currently have -- counter, cabinets, floor, etc. It looks like a pleasant place to cook.

I like it the way it is too. As for some of your suggestions: putting glass doors on the corner cabinets makes them display spaces instead of storage. What do you keep in those cabinets? I don't see how eliminating them would help at all.

Same with the cabinet above the hood - I have never seen this used as display space with glass doors. And no matter how good your hood, that glass will get greasy. I like the look of your current hood. I feel like a stand-alone hood would look crowded between your existing cabinets.

One quick and simple way to modernize is to declutter.

I also think, its a nice looking kitchen, and wouldnt change a thing in it. Everything goes well together. If you start changing one thing, you will just end up changing a lot more. Leave it.
