Cut my hair off today!

I just needed a change. Grew out a very short pixie 2 years ago and had a short bob but I was seeing photos of myself recently and thinking, Blah. So I now have a sort of ”pixie bob.” I think I like it! The front and sides are still long enough to be messy if I want that look, or neater depending on what products I use.

Here I am a few days ago.

Very cute hairstyle for you. I would wear my hair a similar way if I could do short hair.

That's a very cute cut on you and it's perfect timing since it is so close to Summer.

It all depends on which website you you are using Cran. If you are using h o uzz then you may have an assigned number and word combo. If you are signed into Garden Web then your previous name is what you will have. At least that is what I understand. I believe some people have being able to change from a number to a name but don't quote me.

You look fabulous! (what does your dd think? I bet she loves it!)

DD says it looks good, she’s never very effusive but has seen me go from longer to shorter hair many times so it’s not terribly interesting to her. She is dealing with so much right now with the end of her gymnastics career coming up, travel every weekend, classes, internship, starting to look at jobs, etc…my hair is pretty low on her list LOL.

I was a bit worried about how my longer hair would behave if it was humid or rainy for DS wedding so now that’s one less minor detail to think about. I have one more haircut before the wedding too so can ”adjust” as needed.

Sue, it looks great, and as my stylist says it looks like it makes your hair happy.

Are you getting your hair and makeup done before the wedding? FWIW, I left my hair a little longer so the stylist could do something slightly different than my everyday look.

GRAY NOT ME, BUT VERY SIMILAR……WHEN THE PRO DOES IT.

HERE I am, a bit longer . I can come close to first pic above with patient blowout and a bit of teasing, plus (ugh) spray.

I don't know .. when I think of you in my mind, you always have a pixie cut lol. I am sure it is because it was a pixie when I first "saw" you-- but I also think it so perfectly fits your personality and style. You're adorable .. and glad you won't need to fret the humidity for the wedding!

The haircut looks great and versatile. I had mine that short and decided I didn't like the photos -- especially in back. I'm overdue for a cut and may just stay collarbone so I can pull it up...but starting to think about an October wedding.

Sueb, Long time lurker here. I love, love, love your haircut. Mine is almost the same as your before and I am sick of it. I am so focused on not having my ears showing (I think they are Dumbo ears) that I feel like i am just weighted down with hair. Do you have a picture of the front??? I want to show my hairdresser and hopefully she can make me look as beautiful as you --- with a little more hair around my ears. I have a few other pictures I have gotten from the internet - but like yours the best. Thanks a lot.

Well here I am after a long snowy/rainy day.

Here are two pics I showed my hairdresser...

    Aww thank you!

@no_green_thumb I have the same ear fear you have and told my stylist I can't wear my hair short. He insisted I can wear shorter hair with some tucked behind my ears and some in front and showed me how it would look. No, I do not have tiny little seashell ears but as with so many other body features, they are my ears and I am my harshest critic - no one looks at me and say 'she should not wear her hair tucked behind her ears.' Last year about this time he cut my hair in a little longer version of Sue's cut - got so many compliments and felt younger/perkier. But it's not easy for me to maintain so I grew it out and it's now one of the many variations of a bob again and feels very aging. I have to figure out a way to style shorter hair better.

Ear fear - that is too funny!!

You are right. No one is looking at me thinking I should have a different hair style to cover my ears! I took some pictures to her and we have been letting it grow out a bit - but it is not working. I have a lot of hair, good thing, but it is very fine, bad thing, and very, very straight, bad thing. I, too, find my hair difficult to maintain and style. I love it when I walk out after a haircut, but can't replicate it. And she makes it look so easy - she does the whole style with her hands. I am going to have a discussion with her on Tuesday before she does anything. Maybe I need someone new - but I have recommended her to my sister and several friends, so changing would be a bit awkward. I am hoping shorter will be better. Thanks for your reply.

I have noticed only recently that my ears don't match. One is slightly lower and seems to sit back on my head a tiny bit further than the other. I've been told by others that it's not noticeable, but I notice, and that's one reason I grew my hair longer into a chin-length bob. Unfortunately, I never felt like "myself" in that bob, so decided I was going to "own" my ears and just wear my hair however I wanted to -- and went back to the pixie. Lately I've been getting my hair cut in a barbershop because they are masterful with the clippers and I can get the undercut over the ears that my regular stylist was never confident enough to give me. So yeah, my wonky ears show, but since I have multiple piercings in my ears and usually wear large-ish earrings in the lobes, I feel like I'm celebrating their uniqueness instead of hiding them. YMMV. :-)

Plus, don't our ears get larger as we age? Or do our heads shrink?

I'm still having trouble with all short hair being called some variety of pixie. I still think of a pixie as Joan of Arc or Mia Farrow back in the day.

I've started blow drying my hair from all directions, just using my free hand to rough it up and get underneath. It's actually turning out better than using a brush and my hand can feel where I've missed spots in a way my brush can't.

I think I have big ears too…I just figure they balance out my big hips.

It still looks cute even after rain!

I guess I'm turning into a dude, as not only am I frequenting the barbershop, but also using hair products "designed for men." Of course, I think that's marketing hooey -- but the aisle where the haircare for men resides is my go-to for product these days. And of all things, there is an Old Spice hair paste that I'm loving. I work a tiny bit into my hair while it's still wet, then blow-dry using my fingers. Like Bunny, I blow it dry from all angles and start out bent over to get some volume going. Once it's dry, I go back with a little more paste (Frenzy Matte Texturizing for the finale), and piece it out. It's so easy -- literally takes less than 5 minutes in the morning and I don't have to futz around with it during the day. Most days, I even roll out of bed with my hair "go ready" (although I work out in the mornings, so shower and wash my hair before starting my day). The only complaint I have is the need for frequent haircuts. But still, that's a small price to pay for a style I enjoy wearing that's also super easy to care for.

I guess I will be the last one holding down the long bob fort 😎 I love these shorter styles and it would certainly make swimming regularly a LOT easier, but cropped do’s call attention to my neck….and Nora Ephron had nothing on me in the ”feeling bad about my neck” department. But, my ears are acceptable so my hair is tucked behind them 24/7.

Isn’t it funny/ weird how we all zero in on our perceived flaws that no one else would ever notice?

Well, today was the day. My stylist agreed that I had way too much hair - but also said that is what I had wanted - and she was right. I don't know why she agreed with me!!

Now I look like a blond Sueb --- actually mine is a little longer on the sides. I cannot get a pic to post, but I am happy with the results. Thanks for all of your help --- and yes, I zero in on flaws no one else ever notices. Enjoy the day!!

Well it's been a few days since your new hairstyle. I'm curious - did you have any trouble washing and styling it? My hair is about the same length as yours but without the ears showing and it always looks great when I leave the shop. I've never quit mastered the hair dryer and round brush technique so it never comes out as nice as when my hairdresser does it. Plus my hair is straight and I feel better if I have a little volume and fluff so I use a large curling iron to finish the look. And it still doesn't look the way I'd like it to.

I've been on the lookout for one of the heated round brushes that has a smaller diameter.

Well I feel like it looks a little different every day. I have had short hair before but the layers are longer so require more finessing. I may have her cut the layers shorter next time if I still can’t quite figure it out, but I will say I feel more ”me” with short hair and I even said this last time I cut it short so someone please remind me of this if I ever mention growing it out again.

remind me of this if I ever mention growing it out again

Same here. Over the past 20 years I've gone through cycles of cutting it short, growing it out to a bob, getting sick of it, cutting it short, etc. I look back at all the bob photos and I think, no, just don't do that ever again. I am committed to keeping it short for the duration.

Count me in - I as well think I might get shorter layers on the sides next time. My ears are covered, but maybe showing part will be okay. We'll see how I feel about it in 4 weeks.

Marie - styling is always a problem for me. My stylist said today that if I can't style my own hair, then she is not doing her job, but I disagree. She also said it is much easier for her and she is working above my head - I use a round brush with a dryer, then use a flat iron to kind of smooth it down in places where it needs it. I have one of those round heat brushes, but don't use it often. Maybe I should try again. I just need to take a bit more time. It seems like I am always in a hurry.

Bunny, maybe I’m confused but I thought you posted a pic a while back with almost shoulder length hair? keep in mind that ”a while back” could mean 6 months or 5 years ago in my brain.

Sue, it was almost 7 years ago. Since then it’s periodically grown below chin length, but I always end up lopping it off.

Sue, I love your cut, and the only difference between your original photo and the follow up seems to be a bit of smoothing cream, perhaps? I've noticed the final step a stylist takes is rubbing cream in her hands and running it through hair one last time.

Bunny, I recall you posted a photo of your beautiful, thick, gray hair that was shoulder length. It was gorgeous. I'm sure it and you still are, but now I have to picture you with short hair!

No_green_thumb, I can never do what my stylist does, either. I've asked her to move in with me so she can fix my hair every day. She declined.

I'm envious of those who can wear the short-layered cuts and found a stylist who knows how to cut! Looks so freeing to have a short style, even if it has to be styled the time is shorter.

Bunny, I'd take your cut right now as is! Love it!

On the ear thing - anyone notice the ear that's lower is the one where you hold the phone ??

Bunny, that's hair goals right there. Mine couldn't lay like that, but I hope to have that color one day.

    You guys. :)

I'm always at odds with my hair. Maybe I should just sleep on it more.

My recollection of the first morning following a new short cut is that the hair stood up staight. As a teen and early 20’s I often had a style that might have been stolen from David Bowie (fluffy on top very short on sides) One time the sides got buzzed so short I left the shop and immediately purchased what have become almost favorite earrings in hope of adding some softness.

You must be kidding, Bunny...and you're not funny : )
