Green Kitchen, Living room/Sofa color Problem?

last modified: 2 years ago

Hi All,

We've finally nailed down a layout for our kitchen remodel and home addition. The kitchen will be open to the dining room and living room so I want all spaces to be cohesive. I am having the hardest time incorporating the spaces that will not change (Living Room & Full Bath) and the sofa we currently own.

I am in love with the idea of green kitchen cabinets, but we recently bought a Lovesac sofa in glacier cross weave and it def leans blue-ish. I don't want a bold green kitchen and a blue accented living room (right??). Any ideas on how to style the living room to go with the kitchen and dining room while using our brand new expensive sofa? Photos in different lights for reference. Current wall color is BM York Gray.

Adding a pic of the bath across from living room for color reference. Vanity is a deep navy. Wall color is BM Quiet Moments. These are the spaces and furniture that are current and will stay that I'd like to be incorporated into the new design as best as possible.

We are thinking of a wide plank White Oak LVP, but not TOO light.

My husband says we should just do blue cabinets but I am obsessed with the green. Can it work??

Kitchen Inspo - We may do color on lowers and white on uppers on both sides of our stove (layout pic below). If we do white uppers, thinking a hood vent in the lower color with reclaimed/natural wood trim. Also want to do natural wood open shelving on the opposite wall. Love the brass pulls. Could opt for a white farmhouse sink or not.

You can tie the two rooms together by having both green and blue accents in the living room (e.g. in a rug, pillows, curtains, etc.).

Look at the other colors on the BM strip with Quiet Moments. My living room is Mount Saint Anne, a beautiful blueish green.

You could do it if you we’re determined to treat the sofa more like a cool - toned neutral and emphasize adding green and green + bluish gray “prints “, including in that concept things like tweeds or stripes, as well as florals Or abstract prints ( not meaning all of those together ), and artwork, green plants, accessories. It does also depend on how matchy- matchy is your personality , how closely connected the rooms are, and actually your own talent in mixing colors and developing cohesion or repetition. Because it could be done in a few c” easy “ ways or with very subtle and sophisticated mixes that people more talented r than I have. Plus the issue of sourcing items.

So potentially easiest things are: artwork chosen for color combinations; rug ( fair amount of choices, but fewer once you impose filters for materials, price, size; FABRIC especially if you’re will to go custom ( including Etsy) , even in small smaller amounts such as finding a fabric print you love & having a couple of zipper throw pillow covers made.
Green plants ( real) wood carry dark green vibe nicely.

Another option you have is to save some of your green paint and paint an item of wood furniture- something simple like a bench or stool- or even a wooden tray or decorative box- that you use in LR. Different greens do tend to mix well at least in smaller amounts so other greens will work, and it’s common to find nature prints & fabrics already with a mix, but it’d be cool to have a good match in a few elements, to provide that repetition.

This might drive you to pick a cooler green for your kitchen, since a very warm olive- khaki green probably does not work well with your sofa, at least on my monitor.

I think they can definitely work together.

If you have your heart set on green, go for it. Your kitchen cabinets will be around a lot longer than your sofa. Don’t plan your kitchen around a piece of furniture.

I’ll bet the green will make you smile every time you’re in there. :)

A soft, neutral paint color throughout to unite the space.

Kitchen: a less intense/dark green (with a slight blue undertone) would be much easier to decorate around. Inject some wood as well. I’d skip white uppers; keep it simple and warm. The backsplash and counter will bring in the contrast.

Living room: a rug is a perfect way to connect spaces and look for complementary cushions and art. Muted is the way to go, as they can take on shades.

Bathroom: it doesn’t have to flow with anywhere else, but suggest lightening most of your accessories and the wall color, so vanity becomes more of a feature. Suggest new window treatment.

Having both green and blue accents to tie the rooms together is a good idea overall.

@Jilly the lovesac might be around longer than my cabinets! We bought it with the intent of keeping it for a very long time. They are an investment but can be changed into different configurations. However, you are right, the kitchen will make me happy. Love my sofa too, though! I think with the help here, I will be able to make it work.

@marmiegard_z7b this is great advice. I love the idea of painting a piece the same color as the kitchen. My talent for mixing colors is pretty non-existent. Once we nail down a cabinet color I will report back for helo!

I don't like the idea of a blue/green kitchen. If we do colored cabinets, I want them to be green. But I could warm to the idea of a lighter green/sage with no blue tones.

Do a gray-green instead. Benjamin Moore's Heather Gray would work with your fabric.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors we must have been posting at the same time. I could make that compromise! Thank you. This picture is helpful context.
