Medicine cabinet ideas?

My DS's bathroom has a porthole mirrored medicine cabinet from Chadder & CO. sort of a UK Waterworks. We are relocating it to Maine. It is recessed, but the recessed cabinet is smaller than the mirror of course, so the opening is about 16.5"

I want to surface mount a new med cab over it, to avoid drywalling. I need a new med cab that is at least 17" wide, surface mount, mirrored. I'd like something simple, modern, and inexpensive.

The bathroom is white hex, white subway, nickel hardware, with thin, pale aqua pencil molding. I think the mirror should either be matte black or brass. I would repeat that element with a soap dispenser or somesuch, since it is not in the room now.

What do you like?

Are you committed to medicine cabinet? Just a mirror would cover the hole and be cheaper. You may even have a mirror, somewhere. 😁

I was thinking it really should be a med cab? You can get them for 250 and under...

There is no other storage in the bathroom. Pedestal sink, no cabs of any kind

Ok, I dont have anything I have personal experience with. Sorry. I do think they often protrude too much and impact the lighting.

There's a larger size that is 20" wide which might give you more clearance when hanging over your current void. Other colors available.

I am not a fan of sliding barn door anything ( except in real barns,) but this could work just add shelves and a framed mirror in front i bet it wouldnt be too hard to add hooks for a rail.

I have the same problem - took down the surface mounted cherry medicine cabinet to find the hole from the orig medicine cabinet 70+ yrs ago. I cut a piece of drywall, framed it with plastic edging, painted and filled the hole. It bugged me to see the inside studs, etc. It's screwed in and easy to remove. I hung a mirror over it but DH like the medicine cabinet to store his things. I have a pedestal sink and no other storage. We're in the middle of a remodel ( l o n g story ) and now I'm contemplating what to put there. Do I want a cabinet recessed, if so the hole needs to expand. Surface mounted, then lighting needs to come out over it. If I hang a mirror, what to for storage? I've rambled on here only to say I understand your situation!

    How modern, and how tall?

Ikea has a ton of surface mounted medicine cabinets that are wide enough to cover the hole, and don't break the bank. some are more modern, some are a little more transitional.

    The Hemnes is nice, Seattle!

Arapaho, you may like Rejuvenation's Mendenhall - I have 2 in Maine. Or if you want something more masculine or modern, DH has a really large, nice one nickel one from Restoration hardware. It is very generous, really nice inside, and is lit when you open it IIRC.

Jojo, those are a neat idea, but since my BA has a glass barn door, and our front door (to the vestibule at least) is also barn doors, I may want to back off ... although I still see barn doors in new construction.

For some reason, I am attracted to these (avail as mirrors and as med cabs, in several sizes and finishes). It is funny, the curve feels a bit 70s/80s to me. Something I would have pulled out a few years ago in favor of a perfect rectangle, but now the curve seems ... fresh, LOL?

The lighting is all recessed overhead lighting, so I don't need to worry about that for size or finish. I don't want nickel, even though the faucet and shower hardware is nickel. I am thinking of brass actually, or black matte?

Thx, Mtn, will check it out. I love those two mirrors, both brass and black!

Oh good! They are actually med cabs, too. I wasn't sure if they were too blah

This is at Home Depot and $300 because it's made from Aluminum. Less expensive metal versions.

Just threw this in because it's interesting .... a Rubber framed mirror (not a med cab) that comes in several metal looking options - Rubber frame acts as a protective bumper in high-traffic areas-in response to customer feedback, we have recently updated the color to a brighter gold

The "brass" one from Overstock is only ~$184 with a coupon, 17x27--- leaning toward that one.

    Arapaho, that description is odd!

I’m just supposed to sit here quietly while she continues to remove things from my house.

    It’s going in my file!

I like either the black or brass medicine cabinet for the bathroom you describe. Honestly, though, I would install the least expensive cabinet that you like. Unless that room will be a guest room the next owner will surely redo the bathroom to provide more storage, unless you have a linen closet in the bathroom itself.

If by any chance, you end up going with the Hemnes from Ikea and you plan to paint it, buy the white stained finish, not the white finish. I learned this when I tried to paint a Hemnes chest that DD owned.

    I ordered the brass one.

I agree, KSWL, you never know what someone else might choose to do! As a bathroom used only by my son, he was ok with just the med cab and a really nice nickel train rack at one end of the (generous) shower stall to hold extra rolled towels. I think if someone wanted storage they would just put in a vanity. The sink area is probably at least 48 wide, but I just don't care for vanities so put in an oversized pedestal. I also wanted to be able to see the tile floor, which was outlined with the same pale aqua pencil liner.
