Ball Gown Romantica new from Star Roses 2024

Its available from Edmunds’ Roses as an early introduction bread by Meilland and part of their romantica line. medium pink very full flowers with a intense fragrance of classic rose with notes of powder and grass. a hybrid tea with the classic tall narrow growth habit and very floriferous according to star’s and edmunds’ description.

I took a leap of faith and ordered her hoping she lives up to her Romantica siblings Princess Charlene de Monaco( my favorite modern rose) and Sweet Mademoiselle (not my favorite but very healthy and productive for my mom).

I can’t seem to figure if she has been released in Europe under a different name hmf doesn‘t seem to have an answer.

here is a photo from star.

Ball Gown is a beauty! I also hope you can post photos when she blooms. The flower shape reminds me of Summer Romance's.

Oh, My, Goodness! What a heavenly beauty! She’s on my wish list now! Thanks Jasmine & Christine!

My photo above is Summer Romance. I will go back and label it lol. I posted it because it really looks similar to Ball Gown. I may get Ball Gown next year if the reviews for it come back positive.

Summer Romance has been blooming in nice big flushes here this spring since I have been chopping it back hard after blooming, then fertilizing it. She smells divine too!

Not to be a party pooper, but is Ball Gown Romantic another weak necked nodding beautybbeauty beautybeauty? Hope not.

I noticed another new Meilland on Star’s website, Cherries & Champagne. I’ve not seen it for sale anywhere or know anyone who bought one.

They seem to have a few new roses for 2024. Powerpuff Pink is a horrid name but I am intrigued by the photos and discriptions.

my ball gown is blooming and i love it! its very upright so far moses . the fragrance is lovely snd i especially love the shade of pink . i do have a thrip issue and thats evident .

    anyone else have it ?

UnforUnfortunately mine isn doing to hot the cans are still green but most new growth seems to have been stressed (probably due to me trying to control the Field Bindweed that is trying to run rampant in my yard).

hopefully the green canes and the fact that itnis own root it can push through and do well for me.

Lily yours looks gorgeous, im a huge sucker for fragrant many petaled pink roses.

  • last year

@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca - Your BG looks wonderful! Yours looks like a more pure pink than mine. Mine has been more of a Liv Tyler pink - a slightly peachy pink. I didn’t know what to expect fragrance wise based on Edmunds description but it is great.

  • last year

Well, I ordered one for next year. I hope it's a great rose! Your blooms are beautiful, Jen.

UnforUnfortunately i lost my Ball Gown maybe ill try again next year.

  • last year

Powerpuff pink is not even close to the color of that rose, which by the way I love.

Christian, what a bummer that you lost your Ball Gown rose. Are you going to try again?

    Jennifer yours looks great!

  • last year

Christian - that's too bad about losing Ball Gown. Is it worth trying again?

We all want to know if you will try another Ball Gown Christian. The roses you have collected are really wonderful. It's so hard to lose a rose, especially if it cost a lot of time and labor, or was a rare one. The opportunity and ground the loss opens to try something new is making it easier for me than it used to be . There are so many great options. Losing Vick's Caprice was a hard hit , I'm going to try to find an exceptional rose to take it's place - maybe Ball Gown. The name alone draws me.

  • last year

Yes, Ball Gown is a wonderful rose name. Good thing it wasn't named Dee Lish Us.

Today my La Reine could be nicknamed Mill Dew.

  • last year

Oohhh and I have Papa Mildewy

  • last year

Is he related to Dr Huey Dewy and Louey?

  • last year

Mine never really started to grow, it only produce 3 or 4 little canes that got 2-3” long and died. i dont know if it got shocked when planting or if it got stressed from residual 24D in the soil. from me spraying field bindweed last fall.

I will have to wait and see. I want to try her again but I might have to choose between her and some of my other roses on my list like Boscobel (grown him before and loved him).

Since i dont have pictures of ball gown here is Abarham Darby.

  • last year

Really pretty Abe Darby, I love the color !

  • last year

Berrypie - yeah, I like the name Ball Gown too. :) :)

    Love the humor here.

Christian - hmmmm...that's too bad...hopefully mine will be a success story. :) Those look like really large blooms on your Abe.

  • last year

I’m sorry you lost yours, Christian. If you lived close I would give you the extra one I have. You have a wonderful looking Abe there.

  • last year

Looked it up on HMF. It says the habit is 6' tall but only 3" wide. Now that's upright! Maybe a typo?

I don't know about you all, but I get so tired of these marketing images that are closeups of the flower--or a group of flowers. I want to see the whole damn bush in bloom. I want to know the whole context! For example, If I had know The Poet's Wife was so arching and floppy, I wouldn't have gotten it!

  • last year

Oh, I agree about floppiness...I hate roses that do that.

  • last year

AD - ooooh!!! Exquisite petal formation!! What do you think of its fragrance?

  • last year

    @ADzone6b oh that is beautiful!

  • last year

Rosecanadian, I gambled by getting this one this spring because there was not a lot of info out there yet but I am so glad I did. I have had some good luck with Meilland roses so with it being newer I hoped for better disease resistant and it has not disappointed. I have some roses completely defoliated with black spot but this one is pretty clean still. I see a few small black spots but it’s getting near the end of August. I can’t attest to the smell as I lost that when I got Covid 2 years ago, it’s been slowly coming back but nothing smells the same. My husband loves the smell, he said it is strong too. Their website describes it as an intense fragrance with classic rose smell with notes of grass and powder. I am posts some more pics below of the entire bush which needed a little support as the flowers are so big and heavy. The canes are super thick too. I am hoping it will grow straighter as it becomes established.

  • last year

AD - thanks for the bush pictures. I hadn't realized it gets that tall!! Maybe it won't be so good for me. Yikes! I just checked on hmf...I should have checked the height...six feet. Oh, dear. Your first picture is amazing!! Maybe you've got the right idea...maybe I should cut long stems for a bouquet and try to keep it shorter. What's the yellow rose in your vase?

  • last year

    Carol

As Hugogurll noted downthread, the HMF entry says Ball Gown is 6 feet tall, but only 3 inches wide! I don\t think that would be so good for anyone!

  • last year

Is your Ball Gown in a pot in the ground, AD?

  • last year

@rosecanadian - If it’s any consolation, both of my potted Ball Gowns are about 1/2 the height of ADs in my cool(er) climate. I’m sure they’ll grow larger in time but I doubt I’ll see it reach 6 ft here and so maybe it won’t for you?

Hopefully the name of the doesn’t allude to its tendency to ball but I’ve had that problem lately along with petal spotting during cooler, rainy weather here. I still really like it but hopefully it’s not a common problem.

  • last year

Rosecanadian, your welcome. The yellow rose in the vase is Larger Than Life Hybrid Tea rose from Jackson & Perkins. I love this one too! It’s also new for me this year, the blooms are big and smell fruity my husband says.

Shelia, I use 20” WaterRounds around all the bases of my roses. It helps keep the water concentrated at the base of the rose and I don’t have to move mulch to fertilize.

  • last year

That looks like a good idea, AD.

Jeri ,in California, plants her roses in buried pots in the ground and I'm glad you don't have to go to that much work.

  • last year

Ben - 3 inches wide? Okay, I looked on hmf...that must be a typo like Hugogurl noted. lol

Dave - maybe, but mine are grown in pots and overwintered in the garage...so they may grow tall. lol So your Ball Gown balls...not liking the sound of this. drat.

AD - your Ball Gown bush looks really healthy and full of lovely blooms. :) :) And the blooms smell fruity...love! I love your Larger Than Life even more though!! WOWZA!

  • last year

Lovely roses! Sorry you lost your Ball Gown, Christian! Never fun when roses never take off then die.

I agree with PDXRobertZ8 about marketing photos. Would be nice if they would also show what the flowers look like open. I don't think I've seen an ugly rose bud, but some roses when open aren't so great. Would also be awesome if they would also mention how long the blooms last, even if it can be variable. Alas, I'm off onto wishful thinking lala land now...

Any update on disease resistance for Ball Gown? And fragrance? The local nursery will carry Ball Gown, Summer Romance, and Raspberry Cupcake this spring. Which one should I choose? I grow no-spray and I'm a fragrance nut. Thanks for the help!

  • last year

They will also carry PowerPuff... decisions!

And Yves Piaget... So many fragrant pinks!

    Sunny Mississippi

My Ball Gown came from Edmunds last Spring , own root Bare root . It is growing nicely but has some black spot/ disease in spite of regular spraying , maybe she will out grow it later .

Blooms in flushes with intense old rose fragrance . I love the blooms too , heavy fluffy medium pink . They are usually pointing down on long arching canes maybe because the plant is still young .

  • last year

When Ball Gown is fully open is it flat or deep? Another discus fish rose...I don't need.
