LVP doesnt seem like an interim solution. what is wrong w leaving as is for the "few years". get some mats/runners. Maybe its not clear what the "problem" is that you want to cover and then rip it all out in a very short time. Anyway.....peel and stick offers things for such a transient episode.....but kind of a waste also.

To @herbflavor: we are pulling up the yellow linoleum/plywood layer to reroute a gas line.

@Addition I am partial to the diamond layout too! although the cabinets are a very specific look I am trying to get the flooring to not play up the country vibe too much. That may be impossible….there will be a 36” SS range in peninsula with a ceiling-mount hood.

I would try to match what you have in the adjoining rooms. It's a better look than breaking it up.

Cork

Marmoleum or cork are good permanent solutions that can go over the bottom vinyl layer so you never has to fuss with removing the tar paper.

I hate to be preachy, but I do wish people would think about the environmental costs of tossing vinyl in the landfill after only a short use.
