Heads up on Wayfair's big "sale" today

I ordered a rug from them two weeks ago and paid $379. Still waiting for the rug but we are in the delivery window so no worries yet. I received a few emails about their big two-day sale, so I decided to be a glutton for punishment and check the sale price on my rug. It's $429.

I know this happens all the time but it's still shocking for me to see. I'm a sucker for a sale but I guess the emphasis should be on the word sucker and not sale.

So the sale price is now more than you paid?

eld, that's correct. The price two weeks ago was $379. The price today, which is during their big two-day sale, is $429.

I found this very true with wayfair. This was about 2 years ago or so. I had been watching an item in particular and of course the price kept going all over the place. I actually called them to ask and they explained that they use "dynamic pricing".

When they introduce special discounts, the prices really seem to go up.

Wow that seems like such deceptive marketing. I definitely understand platforms like this (Wayfair, Overstock, Amazon, Walmart, etc) having variable pricing, but to publish a "sale" after raising the price seems really inexcusable.

    Thanks for this heads up!

This was in my Consumer Reports email today: Best Deal's at Wayfair's Sale. In an earlier article CR mentioned that it can be difficult to know if the item is really on sale and suggested googling the image and then searching on other sites to get an idea of the regular price.

Thank you for the head's up. I have only purchased one thing on Wayfair. Will definitley not be attracted by the word "sale" when it comes to their site, as mentioned will track on my own if waiting for a price reduction.

Thank you for the heads up -- confirms I wasn't wrong to give up on their "sales".

Several items I had my eye on are now on sale but delivery is 8-10 weeks.

I put several light fixtures on my watch list on Ebay and the sellers sent me "buy-it-now" special pricing that was higher than the previous list price. I sent them WTF messages in my declining to purchase emails. :0) That is sooooooooooo weird.

I am one of wayfair's suppliers. Before this event, wayfair asked us to reduce the price by 40%-50% (warehouse price). We had to follow their request, but in the past two days we found that the actual selling price has not dropped.

I am looking for a new lamp so checked Wayfair the last couple of days since they are having this "sale." In my scrolling, I saw a little blue and white ceramic owl lamp. Then as I was googling lamps, I happened to see a very similar owl lamp show up on Home Depot's site. I don't want the owl lamp, but thought it was curious, so compared the two. Seems to be exact same lamp, $28 at HD and $90 at Wayfair.

I first became aware of this when I was just looking so often that I ended up taking screen shots more so that I would know the description or item number of the item. It usually had the prices in the screen shot and when I went to look it up again, that' was when I saw the varience.

So interesting @Bath Knot Inc. I do believe you .

Today my item is $10 more than my purchase price but not the $50 more that it was during the sale.

    $379

    $429

    $389

There are several things that can affect price. Supply and demand - if a lot of people want it, the store can charge more, and vice versa. Shipment delays, such as during Covid. Production delays, when the supplier can't find employees to work. War, when oil supplies are low and the producer can't fuel their machinery. Etc., etc., etc.

One thing I have found is that the same looking chair or chest may be different prices depending on the materials used. Some products are all wood, where another identical looking item is made from MDF, laminate, etc. Be sure you are comparing apples with apples, not oranges.

Wayfair is particularly notorious for this hideous and deceptive practice. They do it all the time on everything. I never buy anything on that site without bookmarking it and checking it weekly for at least six months, more often one to two years.

I ended up buying a four piece metal artwork piece from All My Walls. But it took me almost four years of watching the up-and-down pricing. At least I got it at the lowest price; not cheap but more than a hundred dollars less than at other times. Holiday sales at Wayfair seem to mean "buy it at our highest prices!"

I've noticed a lot of promotion for sale ending -- hurry, buy now, only to have a steeper discounted sale price follow the end of that sale. That's not Wayfair in particular -- just a general marketing trend.

Another tactic to watch with Wayfair..I purchased on item, then received notice it was on back order. Two weeks later, the item is listed on the Wayfair website as “in stock” but at a higher price than what I paid. My order stills says “back order.” I contact Wayfair and they “open a case” to look into it. One week later I get a notification from my credit card company that I received a refund. I look at Wayfair site and it now shows my order was cancelled. However, the item is still for sale on their website at the higher price point.
