Can I do a mint green rug with grays, golds, and cream?

I recently bought these chairs off FB marketplace. They go well with my couch, but not with my existing rug!

The whole room is kind of blah in terms of color. The walls are York Gray.

Can I do mint green as an accent color? If so, should I do the rug that color?

Should I do pillows on the chairs?

Behind the chairs is a hutch. It is centered under the framed print, but if you’re sitting on the couch, it’s obvious that it’s not centered between the arm chairs. Should I move the hutch to the right so when Im on the couch, the hutch is centered between the armchairs? And then move the framed print and then do something about the gap that would exist in the corner of I move the hutch? I hope that makes sense.

Thank you! I have absolutely no design sense, so I rely on these comments for everything in my house.

I need to see the print on the chairs up clse so post a close up here in a comment do not start another post. As for the centering of the art IMO the biffet is fine as it is but I do not like the extra chairs there if there is no room for them in the DR put thme in a clset somewhere then the buffet seems to belong in the LR not an extension of the DR

Here is the chair print and also a pic of the couch cushion (on the chair). There is some blue in the couch, but it’s faint.

I just moved the chairs back to the dining table.

Where is mint green coming from? I think of it as a soft color that either needs to be for soothing decor— bedroom or bath— or combined with stronger brighter colors. Also is a cool green and you have a lot of beige and browns. Mint and chocolate brown can work together but that’s not really what you’ve got going on here.

I’d be worried it will add more blah.

There’s no mint green. I just thought it would be more exciting than brown and beige. I was thinking a pale mint green rug.

I don’t want anything too dark b/c the couch is so dark.

The FB chairs and rug kind of "talk" to each other. What would help link the chairs and rug is to change out the ottoman for a real coffee table instead in brass time trim that echoes fireplace surround. (Agree with Patricia to relocate two chairs by buffet.)

Additionally, add sofa pillows and bolster pillows for the chairs that pick up some of the rose tones from the rug with some of the tan. Often you can introduce a piece into a room if you add to it another element from some other piece, in your case what looks like a rose color in your rug.

Look for another art work for over your fireplace. The palette below but horizontal. Actually the art work above the buffet would work equally well over the fireplace. Maybe you can find complementary art work like that.

I think I posted at the same time.

Re the existing rug: I also don’t like it. There’s a lot of orange in it, I don’t really see pink.

I have the large rug in my FR that I could move. That rug is approx 9x10”

I also have this smaller rug, it’s brown, blue, and cream. It’s smaller, like 5x7”, but it’s probably the nicest rug I have.

I can’t put anything over the fireplace. The whole thing, floor to ceiling, is marble.

Would you be open to painting? It sounds like you are perceiving your space as "blah" and connect that feeling to the brown and beige. Do you like brown and beige? Maybe its feeling "blah" to you because it is, actually, "blah"? It seems you're wanting something a bit more exciting that what you've chosen so far? You could keep the furniture and make changes that are more exciting or colorful by painting the walls. If I were you I would keep the wall behind the chairs (that looks like it spans into dining space) the same color it currently is. But I would pick a color maybe from your rug and art to paint the other walls in that room. Maybe your minty green color idea isn't too far off (but I think you need something slightly more blueish)... looking at your rug and art a color like a pale greenish greyish blue might pull things together a bit more and enliven the space. And you could add pillows in other colors from the art/rug as suggested above.

Injecting a random color rug for color sake isn’t a good decision. I think the important thing is to complement what you have and add interest by accessory choices for a harmonious and inviting room. Suggest a neutral textured rug, which will be easy to decorate around/will feel airy and classic.

Cushions (bring home lots to test), art over fireplace will be a a great addition and will pull everything together (could paint the brass black with appropriate paint).

    Couch:

    Chairs:

I’m not a fan of the ottoman, as a large square table will do wonders (look on Marketplace and even sell yours/put towards the purchase).

I’d lower the art over chest (and item on wall near window/door). There is lots of info/pictures on Pinterest regarding re: accessorizing for balance, height, grouping - for your chest, console and coffee table.

    Thank you!
You are correct, I do not like the existing wall color or couch color. Growing up, my mother had everything brown, and I think she influenced my decisions. She helped me pick out the couch and wall colors. Repainting would probably solve some problems, but idk if I have it in me. I spent from Aug- Dec painting my kitchen cabinets, connecting office cabinets, kitchen walls, office walls, and powder room off the kitchen. Painting the LR is easy in comparison, but I think it’s too soon, lol.

I retook the pics in daytime light. It’s overcast today, so maybe these aren’t the best.

I think out of everything I’ve seen, I like the olive green the best. Is it too busy though? Do I need a solid color?

I think the room might still be kind of boring to me even with an olive green rug. It would be serene though. How could I spice it up more? Knick knacks?

Maureen, just wondering if you have a source for the art in your 5th photo?

Can’t attach link. If you go onto Etsy there are all kinds of similar styles.

    Great…thanks!

If you can bear it, I also think you should move the ottoman. It is overpowering thd space with too much chunky upholstery and it will over- drive the chair pattern/ rug interaction, as well as other choices. If the chairs are comfortable enough to keep, take that as a good thing and use the ottoman elsewhere.

Ottomans can be re- covered or just draped with an accent color, but I think it’s the form/bulk also.

I do love to put my feet up on ottomans/ footstools, but if you need to use one. I’d save up for a smaller one in leather or faux leather to add a different texture and solid color and more flexibility to move it around. After you make any major rug and accent color decisions.

    Thank you!

Maureen, where is that rug from? I like it. I also like the Etsy print.

The fireplace is floor to ceiling marble. I don’t think I can put something on it- although I would love to. Command strips?

    Here’s the small rug.

I think the wall color is dulling the room. I would not add any more knickknacks - I think you could rearrange as someone else suggested - in a way that allows you to have table lamps, which I think would really warm it all up. I also wonder if you can mount a picture from the ceiling, sort of the way that people hang things when they have molding at the top-it would really be nice to have something over that fireplace.

Maureen, do you have a link to the rug?

Are you suggesting, accent with green (pillows, pictures, etc)?

    Thank you!

The sofa and wall color can work but the fabric pattern on the chairs is limiting hold back the room.

    I can’t replace the chairs.

I like the idea of a cream rug and green pillows. If I can use command strips to hang a picture over the fireplace, I definitely will. I would love to put something there.

I found these rug choices, please lmk your thoughts!

    This one too

    Or this one

I am not a rug expert. But I think using a pale pattern may look too much more blah.

I liked the idea of either a pale solid-/ if not to hard to keep clean— so you can focus on accent colors elsewhere; or, something like cream and brown stripe, or a sort of tweed where it looks light- ish but has dark flecks, and any of those COULD include a bit of an additional color that has some oomph , like a rich green or blue.
I can see I’m not much help!

If the chairs can take pillows, I would go dark-ish or richer than any cream, for contrast and to connect the chair print with the sofa.

For example, could be the deepest color in the print but with a single stripe in a color. Or your choice of accent color with a darker brownish pattern.

That way you don’t have two light- background prints together. I mix a lot of prints and often find it helpful to think in terms of reversing the “ depth “ of the colors in the background vs the pattern.

I love what Beverly posted. It's harmonious and calm without being boring or blah.Just removing the ottoman helps. I'm wondering if you'd be open to a more interesting color for the draperies. They seem very blah to me and don't really add much life to the room. When you settle on a rug you could pull a color from it, or from your art and add that color also in pillows. I hope command hooks could work for art on the fireplace.

I'm not suggesting you permanently move it, but it looks like there is some vibrant art in the dining room with oranges. Could you bring it in and just set in in front of the fireplace or by the window to see what those colors might look like with the furniture?

    Thank you!

I agree, the drapes aren’t helping, but I’d hate to replace them. They’re from Pottery Barn and cost me too much money- I have them in the DR too. It’s just too much to do.

I really like the print from Etsy that was posted. I messaged the seller to inquire about the weight. It’s not too heavy, I think it’s worth a try. From what I’ve read, those Command things stuck to tile, so it should work 🤞🤞

I also really like the green pillows that Sabrina posted. I think dark green is going to be my accent color- and it’s reflected in the Etsy print, so win- win!

    That just leaves the rug…

I like these two, please let me know your thoughts!

    I love Houzz!

If you look at the mock up Beverly did with a rug with some light colors like the chairs but also quite a bit of dark to go with the couch, it really bridges the gap between your furniture colors. I think a really light rug like you're showing is just going to make the sofa look even darker and stark.

As far as the draperies, I understand your hesitation. If you still aren't happy with the results when you've done what you're planning, maybe look into dying your draperies? If they're not silk.

I think I’m beginning to understand what you are saying about Beverly’s suggestion.

Idk if I really like that rug, but what about these two?

LOVE the chairs, however with the different prints the room may be a bit busy. I would maybe do a table between the two chairs, and solid pillows in the chairs. Hope this helps. Happy decorating!

I think the last 2 you posted are both too cool. Even tho the chairs have some gray in the pattern the overall look is quite warm. If you can find one in similar colors to the one Beverly posted that you like (a warmer beige with some darker highlights and not too gray), it might work best. I also think some of the rugs you've posted are quite contemporary looking but your chairs are traditional looking.

Where are you looking for rugs? Go to rugs direct or a similar site with a rug visualizer. You can upload a pic of your room (use the one with no ottoman) and then try any rug in your room. The rugs direct site is easy to use but I always have trouble remembering where the visualizer is located. If you click on a rug you want to try, it's right under the pic on the main page and is in a wonky font that says "picture this rug in your room"

I think the chairs can actually work with your current rug. You could just put a slipcover on the ottoman - and bring in some pillows on the sofa in a mix of colors; velvets could be stunning.

But if you just really want to change the rug, I like the idea of something like this shag for your eclectic mix: https://www.rugs-direct.com/Details/Surya-BeniShag-29105/145927 And you could bring in a few pillows on the sofa - in your grey, gold, cream, green - etc.

Consider placing your sofa in front of the window, across from the fireplace. Then reposition the chairs to the other side of the room. The fireplace then becomes more of a focal point, and the chairs won’t obscure the hutch. It may or may not work, but worth a try. could try it on paper first, by drawing everything to scale. May not need the sofa table (which is currently behind the sofa).

Here is link to rug, but there are so many options on Pinterest and be sure it’s the right size.

    https://www.potterybarn.com/products/capitola-tufted-rug-gray/?catalogId=84&sku=9630366&cm_ven=Pinterestads&cm_cat=Pinterest&cm_pla=Rugs%20%3E%20All%20Rugs&utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=paidsocial&utm_campaign=pinshop&ssp_iabi=1682863768724

    You must be so confused!

Try searching (for anything), ie: I searched neutral textured rugs in your case. Pinterest has links to sources and you can see item and sometimes in rooms. Can search more specifically: green traditional rug, neutral geometric rug, etc.

To see entire room combos, search a room say by color or style and can even narrow down, ie: living room with couch and two occasional chairs (to see what coffee tables were used).

I did suggest soft green, but “soft” is key. You can add more intensity with art and a color scheme is a big decision.

Test lots of items, but the easiest method will be working with your pieces, color and style wise. Neutral or soft does not mean boring.

Don't replace the chairs, buy covers for them, instead! There are many inexpensive covers online, in great colors, patterns, and fabrics for various chair styles. And this would be an inexpensive and EASY way to change the look of your room, dramatically. https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/60d8f856-4089-4796-84f4-af1588907b04.0ac591bc22595e3a275da81f04f50ca5.jpeg?odnHeight=2000&odnWidth=2000&odnBg=FFFFFF or https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/shopping?q=tbn:ANd9GcQdo_OyTfJbgPRu5W1DYUKnSkkC7q-fkN4q06psCZdqJ1g2S6oMh0XBAlReyJldvlbBvNU8LL-VPPnTTWvzYNbUjnVpBGr3Zw&usqp=CAYhttps://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/712UiNsPtUL.AC_SL1500.jpg

The trick is not the color itself, it's making sure one updates the color. You mention, "mint green", which is a dated shade. So update it with "Garden Green"? Or switch-out beige with "Canary Yellow". And use "bright Ivory White" in place of a more traditional white, all shown on the attached sample sheet. https://i.etsystatic.com/8680641/r/il/70ad80/3775101911/il_1140xN.3775101911_45ly.jpg

    Thank you!

This is very overwhelming/ confusing, but I think I’m starting to get it. I’m looking at neutral textured rugs. I do like the stuff at rugs direct. And I’m searching through Pinterest as well. Cream/beige rug with darker green pillows.

A few of you suggested moving the couch by the window. While that would probably work, the LR is in the front of the house and where we spend the most time. I look out the front window a lot, I wouldn’t want to be sitting in front of it and have roughly 1/3rd of it covered by the couch.

    Thank you!

    Update!
I JUST opened the rug that I picked out!

It’s late at night and the rug needs to flatten, but I think it’ll be great!

I ended up ordering an indoor/ outdoor rug from Target of all places. The search was getting so crazy and I was starting to justify things like getting an all cream $1000 rug in a room where we spend the most time in and where I drink coffee every morning.

This Target rug is 9x12 and was slightly under $200! And cleaning is washing with a garden hose or leaf blower!

I’ll post more pics in better light and when I put the furniture back on.

Now onto emerald green throw pillows!

    I'm gonna be blunt:

Does anything about the room bring you joy?

    No..... I am not kidding.

Because to me, it is blah as all get out.

There's nothing wrong with neutral, IF it is what you want. But neutral takes some skill to not read flat and dull as a pancake. Or to actually even clash in tone.

The sofa is the big bad elephant . Get a slipcover! The fire is a dictator/warm. Spice up the rest, literally. Lighten the walls! A great color for you? Ben Moore Navajo White. Has enough warmth and no yellow! Will acknowledge the tome of fire!

I think green except in plants? Will just enhance the mish mash.
