This season's styles ... Liking what you are finding?

last modified: 2 years ago

I have mentioned a few times that I was looking to add a few new clothing pieces this season-- a few fun things and some basics. I have had a few wins (love the RL longline sweater) but mostly misses. I am not liking what is in stores or they are cropped too short or too long and tunic-y. I am not even liking plain old simple long sleeve tees. I am either between sizes or they look sloppy or cheap.

It very well could be where I am in my weight-loss journey-- still bigger than I want to be but smaller than I've been ... but I don't think that's the whole problem. I think I am just uninspired by this seasons' offerings.

I am going to stop looking for now ... focus on some accessories, eyeglasses (I found a new pair i love lol) and decor for my office and patio.

How are you fairing this season.. are you shopping for spring/summer clothes and finding items you like? Maybe I am just looking at the wrong places!

Adorable outfit! I think the jean jacket seems more bbq-esque.

Another vote for the jeans jacket! I think they are so cute, but it is just too hot to wear one here.

I think the straw bag you already have is great. If you wanted to jazz it up a bit, you could tie a coordinating scarf on the handle.

Oh good-- thank you both! I really didn't want to spend the weekend shopping. My new black tank maxi would work too but i want to avoid black (this is a second wedding-- they need good juju lol).

Bbstx.. you know, I literally just decided the same about the bag. All the straw bags that caught my attention were wayyyy out of budget.. not going to happen. A scarf is perfect.

My 92 yo Mum recently said to me “No one should wear black to a wedding, and that includes the MoH.“ Then she laughed, bc my MoH wore black. I‘m not too worried about her memory being that my 30th anniversary is next month. 😆

@Funkyart Love what you put together for ”our” linen maxi ! Jean jacket gets thumbs up from me as well as the straw bag & slip ons.

It is still rather cool here in RI so I may need to wait to debut my dress. I’m off to Jjill to see if I might find any bargains today as it 30% off linen & jewelry . The shopping center also has BR, J. Crew, Anthro, Athleta etc. told DH I may be out for a while 😉 May even put the top down!

Another vote for the denim. The white sweater is nice and certainly a handy staple to have around, but it doesn't add anything to the linen dress. The slipons and purse are perfect too. Don't change a thing about your outfit.

This weekend is spectacular and I hope you have great weather next weekend. -

LOL never thought I'd hear "Yes to the jean jacket for the wedding" LOL! Of course, this is not the wedding. It's just the first they are able to gather friends/family near and far. It is a *very* relaxed event.

Thanks for all the validation. Sometimes I get a plan in my head and then it doesn't play out as I'd intended. There's a part of me still considering the desert rose converse sneakers but I pretty well convinced myself to stick with what I have. I even have the right nail polish lol. It helps to stick to "my" colors.

Maire-Cate, the weather IS beautiful this weekend and next weekend is to be the same. The party is in the evening and to be in the high 70s/low 80s.

Oh fun, Irish2! We don't have an anthropologie here (good thing for my wallet). Can't wait to see what you found!

    Thank you all ❤️❤️❤️

I ended up with ….wait for it …3 new BLACK items of clothing! Black ”wearever” blazer from Jjill along w/full length black linen pants

and since I had to pass right by Chicos to get from Anthro down to Jjill I decided to step inside to check out the ” no iron” button down blouse. I actually went in a dressing room to try it on! I don’t think I have shopped there in maybe 10 yrs. I remember buying a sweater set in ”gray/silver” lurex. Took a chance w/a 1.5 size (10) and really liked the fit since it has set in shoulders and the seams hit in the right place. I think what sealed the deal was the buttons were black also. I’ve been known to sew new matching color buttons on blouses.

Sales person ”Moira” tried talking me into buying one in navy blue also. Checking out I was asked to sign up for rewards program to which I politely declined.

I really like this planter at Anthro but they dud not have the size I wanted in the natural only in black.

I just received an order from Garnet Hill. I got what I now think of as The Funky Sweater, in the plum color (can’t remember what they call the color on the web site). Love it. I wasn’t sure when I first opened it — it looked very boxy — but when I tried it on, it draped nicely.

I also got this linen dress, in a dark rust leafy pattern that must have sold out. I really like it and will probably wear it for DD’s backyard graduation party in a couple of weeks if it’s warm enough outside. The length in a regular was just right for me, so it may be too short for a lot of normal-height people. Glad I didn’t get the petite.

    https://www.garnethill.com/linen-shirtdress/womens-fashion/dresses/392209?listIndex=6&uniqueId=392209&isNewProduct=false

I also tried the “Maire Cate maxi skirt“ which looked terrible on me. But 2 out of 3 isn’t bad!

LOL Sue .. I do like that sweater! I had the same reaction when I opened it but the drape really is flattering (but I do wish the v was a little lower)!

I tried the citron Sue top from Jjill -- I love the color but it doesn't work well with my skin/hair color. I may try another color when I am in the store.

I picked up a few things over the memorial day sales -- and have a few things yet to arrive but I have enough to get through the summer and any travel I manage to schedule over the next few months so I think I am done shopping for now. I may pick up something that catches my eye but otherwise waiting until fall.

Sue - that's a great dress. I even like the dark colors. Glad the length works for you. I wish I could wear regular length dresses but I'd rather not bare my legs - too many gnarly bumps from varicosities and scars. I'm sorry the skirt didn't work for you. The reviewers seemed to either love it or hate it. I only kept the navy print because it hung better than the solids.

I have a question about the sweater you and Funky ordered. Was this the one?

    https://www.garnethill.com/linen-oversized-v-neck-sweater/womens-fashion/sweaters/592289?listIndex=3&uniqueId=592289&isNewProduct=false

In the online photo of the white one it almost looks like bat wings. You mentioned that it looked boxy but draped well or maybe it was just a poor photo. GH recommends wearing a camisole since it's sheer. Will you need one or perhaps it's just the light colors. And since it's oversized did you size down?

I believe the color of your sweater is ”date” @Sueb20

I bought it in navy and liked it so much that i reordered in ”date”. I had to put in a dispute with Paypal since the $72.25 left my account on 4/20 and it was 5/10 and I had not received either the sweater or any acknowledgment from GH. I received my refund just last week.

Boy I keep hearing things that make me want to not shop at GH anymore-- sorry for your hassle, Irish2!

Maire-cate -- it is semi-batwing which I don't usually like but there's something about the way they've constructed this top that makes it fall so nicely. It is close at wrist/forearm but the body hangs loose. I know that doesn't sound attractive lol but it works well for me. I have the light peony color and I don't wear a camisole under it-- but I wear a bra color called "sunkissed" which is slightly darker than my skin tone and you can't see the bra or where bra meets flesh. Not sure how it would work with the darker colors.. curious what Irish2 and Sue think. I have thought about getting one of the darker colors for fall but if i have to wear a cami under it, I'd pass.

Thanks for the quick answer Funky. The sweater is only available now in peony, goldenrod and ecru - and of course it was the sold out date and mint that attracted me.

Irish - that's awful that they charged you and you didn't get the sweater. I ordered a sweater on 3/14 and when I placed the order it stated that it wouldn't be back in stock until 6/30. I really like the sweater and have it in a different color so I didn't mind waiting. But they haven't charged me for it either.

I know I'm spoiled that so many web sites that offer free shipping - even though I know it's obviously factored into the price. But I think GH's shipping fees are rather high.

I don’t think it’s sheer but I usually wear at least a cami or tank under sweaters anyway. Yes, I sized down to a small. I got it on a special markdown and paid $48!

Funky described the fit acurately. I usually don’t buy batwing style either but this just drapes nicely. In speaking with a customer repres from Paypal ”Lillyana” I mentioned that a sale was now going on at GH but I would not order anything until I received either the sweater, an answer to my e-mail, or a refund.

Paypal was excellent and reached out to them

hence my refund. Maire-Cate I even received a survey from GH after asking what could be improved and one of the things I mentioned was they should have ”Free Shipping” over a certain $ amt. as well as a prepaid return label that can be deducted from refund.

I ordered a pair of mules from Sam Edelman that just did not stay on my narrow size 10’s so back they went via drop off at Staples and refund to AMEX in 2 days. I’ll stop now …coffee talking.

Oh Sue makes a great point, Maire-Cate .. I bought the XL and I have been wearing a range of XXL, 1x and 2x .. and occasionally XL. The GH XL fit me very well with plenty of room and length. Unless you are very busty, I would think you could go down a size which might help with the available colors.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I ordered a LG and could probably wear a Med in this style.

I got an odd refund from GH. It was an actual check. Attached to it was an explanation that said something about a conversation I had with them about a credit. I haven’t had time to call them I do not recognize the amount and I cannot find that amount among my records. And I do not recall a conversation about a credit. Can’t wait to see what it is all about!

I was waiting until my tuckernuck order arrived to share my ripskirt success-- but tuckernuck has been stuck in Ohio for days so thought I'd come back to say ...

the Ripskirt fit well and it seems like it will easily adjust if I continue to lose weight. I do wish I had chosen a different pattern and a shorter style .. but I do like it. I can tell it will dry quickly -- which is the point.

I am eager to try the tuckernuck skirt.. it's also for poolside... but it's vacationing in ohio before landing here.

I’m happy you liked your Ripskirt Funky. The

    Tuckernuck skirt looks nice also.

Tuckernuck order arrived and I like the skirt but I don't love it... and good thing because it is also too small. It's very sheer .. the ripskirt isn't as flowy but I think it will work better for beach/pool/ and it's 1/2 the price.

Also received this top which I love -- fits great and I think it is prettier in person. My one fear was that it would be too short but it isn't.. it hits at my hips. It is also thin/lightweight but not sheer. Perfect for a hot summer day.

(PS what appears to be red is pink 😉)

This is the last of the items I ordered before I said I had enough for summer .. I have my large pile of the last batch of returns to make and I am pretty set for a bit.

I love that Tuckernuck top, Funky! i think cover ups are difficult to get right. Last year I got a bathing suit that has a sweetheart neckline and a skirt that falls from the empire waist. It is longer than the typical bathing suit skirt and i don’t have to wear a separate skirt. I just wear an oversized linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to and fron the pool and it sort of looks like an outfit.

    Funkyart thanked Kswl

Thank, Kswl.. I am surprised how much I like the top. I haven't taken it off since I tried it on lol.. and it's only 72 deg here!

My suits make coverups a challenge .. they are both a little big but I don't want to buy new suits until I am closer to my target weight. These are very flattering ... which is great for my "in between" weight.

I have the suit below in all black.. and pictured pattern. The off the shoulder style really works for me-- but it makes it hard to wear a coverup or oversized button without looking lumpy and/or funny. I was thinking a skirt would do the trick (obviously the skirt above would only have worked with the black).

    last modified: 2 years ago

Cute suit, and I see what tou mean about the skirt. Paired woth the right skirt the suit could be a bodysuit top. Coverups are my nemesis… for years I wore a leopard sarong with leopard flip flops and an all black tank suit— it was easy and always , well, maybe not in style but not overtly out of style. I also have a blue tankini and a thin patterned dress from India in blue and coral but have only worn that combination once as something about it just doesnt look right.

KSWL I love the leopard ensemble;might steal that

Sounds like a great look, Kswl! Oddly, much as I love leopard print, I don't wear it in the warm months-- I don't wear much black either. Both dominate in the fall/winter for me.

bbstx - Did you call GH about your refund check?

In today's mail I also received a check from Garnet Hill with the same message "In response to our conversation concerning your credit balance please find the following refund check." The only time I spoke with GH was nearly a year ago when I exchanged an item for a different size and they charged me full price rather than the sale price that I had originally paid. They promptly refunded the $26.00 plus the shipping fee. I don't have a credit balance.

But I was going to call them about the return shipping fees they deducted from my recent return. In the last 2 months I placed several orders ( 2 orders were kid's clothing and were mailed to my kid's homes). Some items were on back order and GH didn't charge my account until they were shipped. As a result there were multiple charges to my credit card and the packages arrived in 4 different shipments on various dates. Unfortunately I had to return 4 items and I called GH to ask if they could all be returned in one bag with one return shipping label. GH said it would be fine as long as I completed the return info on the back of each packing slip. Again they promptly refunded the return - but deducted $8.95 (their return shipping fee) for EACH of the four items. So I ended up paying over $35.00 to return 4 lightweight items. When Customer Service opens on Monday I will call them.

    Very strange.

I had to laugh every time I saw this thread because I was buying such mundane items.

But I do want to recommend a cute sweatshirt from Aerie. I like the flattering wide collar, the zip, and the fact that it is ribbed. It is a medium weight. Yes, it is cropped. I sized up so it would be less cropped and I wear it with high waisted jeans. Aerie runs soooo large though, sizing is a very flexible idea. I am usually a L or XL. But in Aerie, sometimes M is too big. Depends on the look you want i guess. Anyway, I like this so much I bought another one, and I also ordered one in black. Kind of overpriced at the original price of $64.95, but now fair at $38.97. https://www.ae.com/us/en/p/aerie/tops/sweatshirts-hoodies/offline-by-aerie-textured-quarter-zip-sweatshirt/2164_1485_100

I loved your other selections, Mtn .. but didn't order because they only had XL .. and I thought I needed XXL. Based on your experience with their sizing, I probably could have made a L or XL work... just guessing but it would be worth a try.

Love the collared sweatshirt too .. would be great for my early morning conf calls which tend to be pretty casual (and it has been cold in the mornings!)

I am taking a clothing embroidery/mending class so I had to find some clothes that needed to be mended. Didn’t really have anything in my closet, so decided to check a couple of thrift shops. Well haha, I found nothing in need of mending but I did find

J Crew simple black blazer for DD $4

3 casual dresses for DD $4 each

cute white blouse with little embroidered tigers all over for me $3

Talbots summery pink blouse for me $10

J Crew plaid summer blouse for me $8

fun summery scarf/wrap for me $4

charcoal cotton/linen blazer for me — sleeves too long so will bring to class $4

Banana Republic mens dress shirt for DD’s BF $3

I could get used to this.

I've recently gone on a bit of a shopping spree (ok nothing that crazy) to add some more summer shirts to my wardrobe. These are some I've liked.

White House Black Market had a few sleeveless tops that I liked. And a bunch I returned. Their sizing seems very inconsistent. These are three that I kept.

While I was returning some of the WHBM items that didn't work, I stopped in at JCrew and Madewell. I found this top at Madewell and I really loved the color. It's outside of my "normal" color picks so I snapped it up.

Also, I would like to start a formal protest against cropped tops and barely touching the top of my pants tops. I would grab a handful of items at each store to try on and nearly everything was ridiculously short. I picked up this soft beautiful blue short sleeve sweater at JCrew and I was so excited. Got into the changing room and unfolded and realized it was a crop top. I generally wear mid-rise pants and it seems like everything is designed to show stomach right now.

Oh man, I threw a fit over the weekend about cropped tops! I get younger folks like crop tops but there are some brands that are showing few options that aren't cropped ...

I love the color and style of the madewell tank! I didn't think I liked the high neck but I picked one up earlier this season and it is great for layering!

Anyone have experience with Cozy Earth? I am not buying clothes right now --at least not today ;) .. but I do need some summer pajamas/nightgowns and they keep popping up for me.

Some of us short people are happy about the cropped top trend! Not super cropped, but a 23” long shirt is just right for me.

Side note, I just ordered a second one of these because I’ve been enjoying the one I bought last year. Very loose and flowy and forgiving… it is low cut so I wear a tank/cami under mine.

@Sueb20 that makes total sense that the slightly shorter tops would work well for shorter/petite people. I have a stylish sister in law who is petite and she's been looking fabulous lately. I be tthis is exactly why: the shorter tops work really well for her. I'm trying a few slightly shorter tops, including the Madewell tank, but I wish there were more options!

@Funkyart I think it's exactly what you're saying. I think the younger people are wearing crop tops left and right, regardless of body type. I might be ok to wear a crop top, but I really don't feel comfortable in them. At 40 it feels like that ship saled a decade ago. Ironically I wore crop tops a lot in my tweens and teens when they were last in style, but I just feel too exposed now. I wasn't certain if I could wear a high neck either, but I think the slightly more cut out shoulders helps balance it on my body at least.
