I live in an old house so, although I'd love to do it, putting recessed lighting in the ceiling of most rooms isn't appropriate. Except for the kitchen which we remodeled in 2019 and has 3 levels of lighting, most room have only 2 levels, general mid-level fixtures and one task/reading light, (living room), or one center ceiling light and table lamps (bedrooms).

Unlike the person above, like the featured room. There are a couple things I would change though. I love the ceiling light, I like the moody color as well.

We live in a Northern area of the country where we have very low natural light all throughout Late Fall thru Early Spring so we need more lighting available for that reason. Plus we are avid readers and one of us is developing cataracts.

We like a nice mix of unique, beautiful table/floor lamps for decor accents. Plus recessed lights and down lights inside our etageres and bar cabinet. Recessed lights down the halls and the stairs where there are natural dark holes. We enjoy a ceiling fan to move the air but do not use the light because it is too small to be efficient. We have a tiffany style chandelier in the entry hall.

Lamps near the head of the bed tend to cast shadows on our books when reading, so we have added directed recessed lights to solve that problem. A dark & dreary house is a sad house in my mind...so we use all the lights we need in the rooms we are in...and leave them off in other places.

I've never been into the whole pendant or chandelier over the bed thing.

Depends on which room , if it’s a room that has a big comfy chair for reading floor lamps might be necessary. Other room depends on daylight or night. Lighting Should be comfortable asset no matter what the time of day or night.

I agree with Betty Bradley: it totally depends on the room. DH hates overhead lights, but of course we use them for dinner. In the kitchen we usually use undercab lighting, top (glass) cab lights and the island pendants; if it’s really dark I add the recessed lights, as well. One important things is having dimmers wherever possible.

TOTALLY depends on the space, what it's used for and what illumination is needed.

I have lamps & overhead lighting in most rooms… I use the lamps the most. I’m not sure I would need anything more.
