Shutters and Trim for BM Seapearl exterior

Hello! I have a paint color dilemma and would
love some advice on choosing trim and shutter colors for my 1880s house. The stucco will be painted with Benjamin Moore Seapearl
and I’ve been considering doing the shutters in a dark warm gray or dark taupe (Kendall Charcoal Chelsea Gray etc). I’m looking for a trim
color that would be darker than the stucco but lighter than the shutters. For the door, I’ve been think about a light gray blue/green depending on the trim color. The house is located in Philadelphia and faces west so gets direct afternoon light. I’m hoping to arrive at a scheme that complements the green of the front garden.

Here are a couple of photos of the current paint colors (don’t know what they are since I inherited them when I bought the house).

Thanks in advance!

Thank you! The white shutters look very nice against the green of the landscaping

French Blue shutters are elegant and complement the style of your historic house.

Thank you! The French Blue is very pretty.

I’d been leaning toward a darker shutter color because between the intense sun and reflection from the sidewalk, the facade of my house gets washed out. I’d love some suggestions about how to add a bit more dimension/contrast with the shutters and trim. For the trim I’d like something that calls attention to the detail around the door but that would be lighter than the shutters.

    Thank you!

Thank you for your comment about the house!
I’ve been thinking about a dark neutral (gray, greige, taupe families) for the shutters, a lighter neutral for the trim and then a light green or blue for the front door for a pop of color. I’ve been looking at Kendall Charcoal for shutters - but keeping getting stuck on the trim! Also I’m concerned that the Kendall Charcoal might be too dark - although with all the sun it might be ok.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

I think dark colors will fad fast and best with the lighter color. Love Lyn’s suggestion.

Kate - That's a really good point. I hadn't thought about the fading. Time to shift my perspective and go back to the paint store :-)

Lyn - That's an exceptionally pretty blue. My painter is very particular and only uses Benjamin Moore. Any thoughts on a BM equivalent?

    Thanks again to everyone!

Look at BM Buxton Blue HC-149 for a color close to what Lyn showed. I think you could use almost any color on that background, so get a board to paint samples on and see what you like. It's a pain to paint shutters and a door, so you don't want to have to pay for that more than once.

We painted our brick house Seapearl with white trim and black shutters. Love it.

Can you do anything about the irregular texture of the stucco? So lumpy in appearance.

I'm having the stucco patched etc as necessary, but fortunately the majority of the stucco is sound. My contractor and I talked over whether additional work was needed and ultimately decided that any further work on the the stucco would introduce too much risk (and expense) since the house is almost 140 years old. So I've decided the stucco just adds to the character!

I think whatever colors you choose will probably look vastly different once the sun is hitting them. I would pick several if you like that blue. I was looking at the color for BM and looking at deeper related colors. One is Jamestown Blue and a bit darker is Blue Echo also Bella blue. I would try these as well. Personally, I would pick something like that color from BM and then get a couple of shades that are a bit darker. Colors read so differently on an exterior with full sun.

Whatever you decide it will look great as it already does now.

You can check at BM site for different shades of body and shutters colors and go with one of them for trim.

You might want to wait till after the body of the house is repaired and painted. In direct sun, the shutter colors may look different against the new main color

Darker colors will definitely fade faster in the direct sun, but I think softer contrast will be prettier on your small house. In BM Historical; Colors, you can check out Wythe Blue and Palladian blue. They're a softer contrast.

    Your house is quite adorable.

Thank you for the advice and kind words. I’m going to seriously consider using lighter colors
    for the shutters.

Hi there! I know this is an old post but I am thinking of using Seapearl for my exterior stucco and wondered if you had any pictures of your home that you could share? I am also having a hard time figuring out colors for the trim and shutters so any advice or pictures you can offer would be much appreciated. I'm sure everything turned out beautiful! Thanks in advance!

Hi mhans101 - Here’s a photo of the house. I ended up taking a bit of an unconventional approach, but am really happy with how it turned out. I used BM Kendall Charcoal for the shutters;BM Rockport Gray for the trim and SW Barn Red for the door. One thing to note is that my painter had specified Benjamin Moore for the shutters and trim but unbeknownst to me ended up color matching with Sherwin Williams (sigh) so the colors may not act the same as the BM paints.

This blog was very helpful: https://www.brickandbatten.com/?s=seapearl

Hope this helps, and good luck!
