I had 4 beautiful half grown Bluebirds found dead in the box . . .

The mother gone, the father seems to be hanging around high in a tree. I have a stovepipe baffle. Was it a snake ? A racoon ? (I personally think it was a snake I just have a 'feeling'). Could my baffle be too long which gave the snake something to push itself up the baffle against ? We have some ridiculously long rat snakes here. I am just messed up about this and I need to fix the situation somehow. Thank you. (Rio)

It's hard to say for sure. Was there any trauma to the chicks? Do you have house sparrows in the area? I would think that the snake would have eaten the chicks and left no trace. Dead babies with trauma may be most likely due to a house sparrow attack. Sialis.org is the best source of information for troubleshooting situations like this. I'm so sorry; this is the difficult and sad part of being a bluebird nest monitor!
