what type of rug to use for office?

Hi! I need some help deciding what kind of rug to get for my office. The large window you see on the left will eventually become a sliding glass door, so I’m torn between getting a 5x8 for under my desk and chair or a runner?

I would love something under my chair because I also often put a walking pad down there as well. I’m over thinking this for sure 😂 also just to note - the room is a complete WIP right now lol

Cheery room! And cute doggy. :)

I think with your colorful walls and organic tile, a natural fiber rug would look great — jute, sisal, or seagrass.

I’d go ahead and get whatever size you like for now, and what will work best, rather than thinking of future sliding doors.

Thanks for your input!! I will be painting the walls something a little less bright eventually 😂 but I think either way a natural fiber rug is a great idea. Thank you!!

Hello! Natural fiber rugs are beautiful and add a lovely touch to any room. The only thing you may want to consider if you have decided on purchasing a natural fiber rug for this space is that you may not want to get an office chair with wheels/casters. When running the wheels across natural fibers - especially if you are continuously doing it; they can easily snag and fray and may potentially ruin the rug very quickly. If you are doing a stationary office chair this should not matter.

However, if you prefer an office chair with wheels/casters on it you may want to purchase a low pile and/or machine made rug. Polypropylene or polyester blends with wool or cotton are usually very durable, will stand up to chairs with casters, and can be cleaned easily. You could also look into wool or handwoven rugs, but keep in mind wool or handmade will be more expensive than a machine made version! There are hundreds of handwoven or wool rugs that are a very low pile or a flat weave. I hope this information is helpful!

I’ve had jute and seagrass rugs under castors and never had a problem with snagging or fraying at all. I even have one (jute) my cats use for nail sharpening, no snags in over 20 yrs and running. I’m shocked at how much abuse it gets and still looks great.

The key is buying a good quality one with a tighter weave.

Another option if that’s a concern is a poly that looks like a woven rug. Lots of choices out there, if that’s a look you like. :)

I’d just be sure whatever you consider is low piled for your desk chair. I had a wool one once and had a hard time rolling the chair. I had to switch rugs.

Love your wall color. So energetic which is great for office. Since you appear to have an ergonomic desk chair on rollers I would get a glass floor pad and no rug. It would make moving around while seated easier especially on your back. Many different choices and price points.

I don't know if you would like to take the floor into consideration or even if you Southwestern design, but the rugs are "made in the USA, stain-resistant, received the highest durability rating, made with premium nylon, treated to prevent fading, engineered to lay flat, fire-resistant, and anti-microbial." It seems to fill your needs...sunlight, will stand up to traffic once the slider is installed and pet friendly.
