Are my painters typical or should I be concerned

I am getting my whole interior painted while I am still living at the residence. They are also painting my cabinets. Initial quote was 6 days. By day 4 they had only primed 1/2 the house (1424 SQ FT) and sanded the cabinets. By end of day 4 they got primer on most of the cabinets (1st coat) and began to paint the walls of the 1/2 of the house they had primed. They haven’t done any trim yet. They moved the finish date to 9 days. Should I be concerned?
By the way, I selected Super White for everything but a couple of rooms will have Balboa Mist. The colors are gorgeous

Very typical. Bonus points for showing up several days in a row!

If they are neat, maintaining a clean worksite and showing up daily i would not be upset by the time extention. Prep work is the most important part of a good paint job and sometimes painters run into having to do more prep than estimated.

As long as they are not charging by the day its all good, lol. Actually their initial time frame seemed a little on the short side.

I had painters spend a week at my house painting a two story livingroom and my kitchen (eat in, so on the large side). So I don't know how they ever could have painted a whole house in six days. Their estimator drastically under estimated the amount of time it would take which is concerning only if they want to increase the price by 50%. If they do a good job but it takes longer (and they don't ask for more money) you don't have anything to complain about or worry about. Of course I don't know how big their team is. There were three people on my job. DH usually does all our painting and the prep can take longer than the painting as Anna says.

Thanks everyone. They had 2 guys before today but 3 came today. Looks like they are moving it along. I am pleased with their work, I just wasn’t sure if I should be worried about their lack of movement the first couple of days. The cabinets were mostly primed but sat in the garage for 2 days. Everything looking up now

I should have said mostly sanded. Not primed

IMO the cabinets needed to be painted off site in a spray booth so I would be very concerned with them doing the cabinets . In fact I never use the house painter to refinish cabinets . As for the time frome it seems reasonable to have extended the time frame. Just keep in mind your job is probably not the only one they are doing. It also is much more time consuming when painting a home that is filled with furniture

Did you ask them? Might have committed to six days planning with a full crew and then someone(s) got a better gig somewhere else and bailed. Which, unfortunately, happens a lot.

Re: cabinet painting. Cabinet "specialists" exist yes, but in many cases, a larger painting company has cabinet specialists on the team or painters are skilled in both cabinets and house painting. For my cabinets I used a highly recommended painting company who did all kinds of painting, interior, exterior, cabinets. They rolled different people in for different tasks i.e. removal, sanders, primers, finish coat, reinstall. Cabinets were painted on site and are wonderful! The painters were delightful and I got to know them well over the three days they were at my house. There were five of them and three of them had been with the painting company for many years, the other two more at the training level i.e. one only two years and one in her first year. The newest member of the team functioned as an "assistant," doing setup, cleanup as they went, keeping spaces clear, refilling painting pans, etc.

I share all this to say, if you learn about the painting company, how they work, who is showing up, etc., there are no absolutes of who does what kind of work. The real measure is quality which you can find out through references beforehand.

This actually sounds rapid to me! Incredible that they have showed up every day too. Six days sounds like an underestimate and I think it would be fine if it took two weeks.

My husband is commercial contracter with multi-million $ jobs. Even at that level, it’s generally acknowledged that painters are the likeliest to be regularly indulging in some kind of substance impacting their ability to show up and perform job on timely basis.. Seems like you’re ahead with your painters.
