Since you have a brown roof in the gray Pacific Northest , then a warm ivory might be a better choice than gray. That's probably why previous owner went for a light color. Does the house need painting? If not, then devote your budget to great landscaping. new stairs. the greenery in front of the left wall does a decent job of camouflaging the rock wall there. The big rhododendron on the right should come down. Paint foundation to match whatever color you pick.

It seems the previous owner wanted the stone ignored. Dark colors are very popular and that would certainly be an easy way to go with the stone.

I'm afraid that since the stone is dark that a bright front door isn't enough to balance all that out. Haha, we were planning to redo the stairs/entry and remove the rhododendron, but that was part of the cut.

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images Oh wow, thank you for the renderings! It's very helpful. I do like a taupe grey with the stone. In my head I kept picturing the blue gray we had originally, which doesn't go as well. I didn't even think about changing where the entry stairs go. I do like idea of having it closer to the end of the driveway.

Is that the only place where there is that stone? I like stone on homes but if thtais the only lace that has the stone I would probably remove it if it is driving every choice you are making, If you love it then a taupe is the answer .definately not blue I aslo think the landscaping will change the whole look of the house and show a lot more of that stone that to me is just slapped on to say you have stone.

As far as the front door color, do that last. A pop of color against a neutral body color will look good and is in keeping with the style of the house. Once the rest of the house is done sample some bright colors you like - one of them will hit the spot. Or since you're replacing the front door, look at the manufacturer's standard colors as a factory finish is the best choice. Hopefully a MCM style door will have some nice color options.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting That is only place with stone and we don't like it very much, but taupe with the stone is helping it grow on me. We were unfortunately ~20% over our desired budget, so we are prioritizing the interior vs our exterior wishes.

@kandrewspa We're lucky that we can get any Sherwin Williams RAL color (https://industrial.sherwin-williams.com/na/us/en/general-industrial/color/ral-color-selector.html) factory finished for our door, so we're trying to pick our door color along with the trim and window colors. I think I'd want to keep the trim and windows similar.

Debating white trim vs dark or black trim with taupe first. I keep leaning towards dark.

I like an orange or poppy red door with a dark exterior. Lime green or bright yellow also work if you like something that really makes a statement.

Think of that stone not as part of the house but more as a backdrop to a spectacular flower bed/front yard landscaping. Incorporate the stone colors into your new stonework /masonry, (including driveway). I really like Celery's #2 example, with the various step levels artfully arranged. (Except I would move, eliminate, or shorten the wall (with house number) so as not to block the view.)

Sorry I dont think the dark siding + white trim works - at all. Not only woefully overdone, but on this style of house to pick out/emphasize skinny trim is not a good idea. Just leave trim same color or only slightly lighter than siding. The front with its large glass panes is plenty interesting as is (it really is quite lovely), You dont need the trim picked out/emphasized, in fact doing so would make the front too "busy" looking. For siding stick with light or at most a mid-tone - you want the visual "weight" to be on the bottom (ie the stonework/ flower beds/landscaping), not top.

@Debbie Downer I'll definitely think incorporating the stone colors whenever we're ready to tackle the landscaping on a grander scale. I do tend to like cleaner less busy looks, so having the trim and siding similar makes sense.

@kandrewspa Thank you for the ideas! It was surprisingly difficult to come to a consensus on front door color because we each like different ones. Both of our neighbors have red front doors, so we'd prefer not to do the same. Yellow ended up the winner.

I'm playing around with some paint options. For siding, I'm considering SW black fox, SW urbane bronze and the wild card of SW raisin. Would love specific suggestions and also planning to explore lighter options as well, but as mentioned, I just like the darker look. For the door, I'm between a more neutral yellow or more orangey yellow.

I think you should enhance the great MCM look of your house by replacing the garage doors and front door with period appropriate (i.e., mid Century Modern) style. Both look builders’ grade from the photos.

Here are two examples. Built there are many other MCM styles that would work well.

Hi everyone, I have to order windows soon, but it's hard to feel confident making a decision when I haven't decided many other elements.

Top contenders for the exterior are SW Black fox and BM Tulsa twilight 2070-10. Photos in sunlight and shade.

To me SW black fox is the easy choice. Dark, but not too dark and matches the stone well. However, I've very drawn to BM Tulsa twilight because I like the hint of purple. Doesn't show well in photos. It is very dark in the shade and black houses seem hard to get right. I keep mulling if I can make it work or not.

I see black houses with white trim and windows, but that seems to stark to me. Most black houses with black trim and windows have some lighter elements like wood to keep it from being too dark and when everything is black that's too much for me.

So I think my debate is what elements could modulate going black on the house. Maybe going a shade or two lighter on the fascia/soffit/garage doors?

And I'm debating black or bronze exterior windows assuming that I go dark.

@Kat M Thanks! I love Raisin in the shade, but I can't decide if it's a bit too purple in the sun for me. I think my unicorn paint color is between Tulsa twilight and Raisin in darkness and the amount of purple that comes thought. Raisin is still a contender though. I do seem to be attracted to less common paint colors and I'll be sure to update as things move along.

@texmax13 Wow, so many combos! Thank you! I'll look into them and thankfully, I have a lot of time to make up my mind. I decided to go with bronze windows, so that's one less decision on my plate.

Dark Basalt is kind of in between Raisin and Tulsa Twilight :)

Reporting back- Dark Basalt isn't good for the exterior, but after another round at the paint store, I've come up with more options.

Exterior options. Out of the hint of purple ones, SW Black Swan, BM Galaxy, and maybe SW Perle Noir are standing out, and SW Black fox is still in the running too.

Trim options for Black fox. Yellow is the potential door color.

I like SW Griffin, Manor house, or BM bear creek.

I also like them with the other paint options because I think they go with the stone nicely. SW Peppercorn is pleasant without the stone, but likes too blue with it.

Ok, been digging deep. Before you make any decisions, grab these swatches. I think they may give you the purple feel you want while working better with your stone. Also, I know you want a yellow door but it’s hard to find yellows that are approved for exterior use so I’m giving you other options just in case.

I think our issue is warmer purples, start to look just brown as we go dark, so we (my husband especially) like the cooler or neutral purples.

And sorry for the confusion about the door. We are getting it factory finished and they have a similar yellow available, so I was trying to see what I thought of it together. I would love a teal door too, but my husband didn't, so after some back and forth, yellow was the only color we agreed on, which is why I'm sticking to it.

@texmax13 I finally got swatches of your suggestions and more and went to take pictures. It was cloudy and it's amazing how much of a difference the lighting can make.

SW Darkroom, BM Topeka Taupe, and BM Night Shade.

I love Topeka taupe. It gave me the hint of purple I was looking for. I think BM Night Shade goes well with it, but don't like it as much. In the bright sun, SW Darkroom didn't appeal to me, but in this lighting, I liked it with Topeka taupe, and it also has that hint of purple.

I would buy a Samplize of the top contenders. Keep Raisin in the mix. I’m sorry I didn’t post earlier so I could keep adding my vote for it. It’s the most unusual and interesting color of the bunch. (Second choice is Black Fox. Safe but definitely beautiful.)

Picking an exterior color from these tiny patches isn’t a good idea. Painting big pieces of poster board, one for each side of the house really helps see what these colors look like at different times of the day. Before doing that, buy the Samplize. Small investment to protect a bigger one. This is a big decision.
