Help with sunken living room furniture placement, please!

Our house was built in the 1990's with some sunken areas. I have just finished painting the "sunken" family room (hence the bare walls) and will get rid of ALL of the furniture except the TV and am replacing the carpets. The problem is the transition from the kitchen floor hardwood floor to the "sunken" family room. The room is small (16' x 13') and the corner fireplace lessens my options for furniture placement. In the pics you see I have the sofa against the "sunken" part and the loveseat in an L shape so we can watch TV as well as face the fireplace.

I am SO tired of this living room. I'm at a loss as what to purchase: a sectional and place it in the same place as the sofa and loveseat are now, or get a new sofa and loveseat with the same furniture configuration.

I'd love any feedback on how to change my boring living room. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!
