Ideas for converting a coat closet to built in hall tree

last year

I’m looking for advice/ ideas for conversion of front entrance hall closet into built in hall tree. Trying to make it more efficient and more attractive.
We are doing main floor renovation in 70s house. Opening up a wall between kitchen and living room to create open concept main floor. At the front entrance currently has 7.5 feet long and 2 feet deep coat closet. It’s inefficient for storage as things sort of just get dumped in there. I’m hoping to convert it to more attractive and useful storage. I would love to still have some closed space to hang coats not in use, a place to put mail/keys, and definitely space to put shoes. Ideally also a little bench with hooks above. I didn’t find a lot of good inspiration online, so was hoping experts here have some examples/recommendations. Pics of the current closet

Another picture didn’t post - the closet is right of the front door and will be facing the living room and kitchen. No opportunity to have a mud room anywhere.

I don’t think I’d ever do away with a closet. You say Things just get dumped there - well where will those Things get dumped if you do away with the closet? Are you getting rid of all those Things?

Maybe you just need a better organized closet.

Yes. But I was hoping someone here can share their actual projects as I find it helpful

@littlebug - yes, the plan is to go through everything in there and get rid of unnecessary stuff. A lot of space is wasted currently because it’s hard to reach far left beyond the bifold door. So I hope if I could open up that whole wall / door and reorganize the shelves/storage it would be more useful/ practical

Replace the doors with bi hinge doors that match your other interior doors. Build out the interior to maximize storage. This does not look a place for open storage on view to everyone.

It depends on exactly what you need. I would take measurements and pictures or lists of what I wanted to put in the closet and visit with a closet designer. There are lots of pictures on the Internet like the ones that follow. Check Pinterest for other inspiration.

I think with any of the open options you are going to end up with way less storage. i would not do this if it’s open to rest of living space. much eaaier/cheaper to work on closet organization to improve it!

Take out the closet completely (all the way to ceiling) and add something custom like this:

@emily - thank you for the inspiration picture. This is what I had in mind - some closed and some open storage. I mostly see just open options online. Love the doggie bowls idea, we need a new spot for them

This is the closet by the door to our garage. The shelves are a perfect spot for "grab and go" items: purse, climbing gear, masks, hats and mittens in the winter. Extra shelves at the bottom keep our shoes tidy. (this is how we really live - I didn't bother staging for the photo).
