Guest bathroom - is this sink too busy with the tile? Plz Vote!

Hi All,

I am designing my downstairs bathroom which is very small, basically a powder room with a small corner shower. I am using an handmade cement arabesque tile (from Arto) on the floor, smooth plaster wall, zellige in shower, unlaquered brass fixtures. I am going to use a floating sink as the space is small.

I am having a hard time deciding if I want to take a risk and use this bold sink. Or should i go more subdued and let the tile shine? Or should I scrap both and start all over?

What do you think?

Feedback would be awesome!

I would go with the bold sink. I think it looks fabulous and would be great with a wild wallpaper. I would use the sink but change the floor tile.

Feel free to ignore me, but what do you LOVE? Start with that. Do you love that wild sink? If you do, others can help you find the rest to fit.

have a more subdued floor and go for the sink!

Go for the wild one if that's the one you prefer, then design the rest around it. This is my sink... well, the design is my sink, I have it in the wall hung version.

They are both horrid. Marble is porous also. Not a chance I'd use a marble sink.

Why are sinks produced in marble if they are not usable?

Love the sink, hate the tile colors.

I think I’m going to do a smaller more petite sink. And I’m keeping the floor tile, but I’m rethinking the color though and might go with one of Arto’s other colors. I originally chose this one, as it’s their popular quick ship Winslet blend… the other colors would be 10 weeks. It is a Spanish house near Santa Barbara and rustic , funky is the vibe I’m looking for.

This is the new sink I’m considering and the floor tile I originally wanted. I’m going to look for different colors.

@S Hill How do you feel about a dark bold wall color for the wall the sink will hang on? What is your color scheme for your home? For example a dark greyed navy blue if blue is in your home.

I am a fan of the gorgeous sink AND the shower wall tile, together. Not the flooring. There should be one star in the room. The sink. I would go with a dark tile, in the color of the veining of the sink. Plain. The sink is so full of character!

The tile is too busy with the sink. KISS: Keep it simple, St****.

Choose star. Sink or floor. Then go neutral on element that is not star. Seems the sink is the true star so I would go simple floor with maybe a slightly darker grout for tile picking up tone from sink. Makes big statement!!

I don’t like either sink with the floor tile; so maybe the issue is the floor tile… I agree with the others saying to choose a star.

I think the sink is gorgeous and in the bold colors you posted. I can't tell whether I would do that floor with it or not.

Here are some real life pics of the floor. Everyone seems to hate this tile, lol… I’m wondering if that’s only because I didn’t post very good photos of it. Keep in mind, the house is a 100 year old Spanish bungalow in a coastal area of Southern California.

It's not that I don't like the tile, it is the combination that isn't quite working IMO. Being a Spanish influenced design, you can mix lively things but they still have to have nice uniting threads for a cohesive look. Lucky you living in such as beautiful spot.

@sabine halfhill or @S Hill (same person?) so you really love the tile too? You love both and are trying to figure out how to use them in the same room? To me, these to materials "go" better together than the pictures first posted, which seemed an either/or question. Sorry I misunderstood. I think the materials here would blend nicely and easily fit into the home you are describing. I would avoid the white grout though and instead choose something like one of the two tiles colors, either the star or the cross. I love the Moroccan star and cross design. It is well-suited to your homes age and style.

I disagree with the idea of choosing one item in a room to be a star. I think that is a safe route and appropriate for most situations but it is not necessary. With really great design, one area may be a focal point, but the whole space becomes the star and is a work of art with each element a point of interest. It's just too difficult for most people to pull off, so the one-star route is the usual advice and usually best. But here is an example of real art. You tell me which thing in here is the "star" or if the whole space is just breathtaking. And don't make me look for examples in art nouveau...

If you are going to go for it, go for it. I love both sinks. Use the blue in the sinks and go bold. Choose a highly polished navy tile for the shower. I believe the zellige tiles come in a navy blue. How about the toilet? What color do you plan for that? White, navy, grey, biscuit?

I like the star shaped tiles with the the marble flooring, but I don't like it with the sink. I think it's the pink in the tile.

Do a search for navy powder rooms. I want a navy slubbed silk for my power room walls. I've looked at a lot of navy inspiration pictures. There are plenty of pictures to use as inspiration.

You have so much movement in the sink, I would be careful in selecting additional patterns. Pattern design is difficult and easy to get wrong. Be bold. The powder room is the place for it.

If there's a place to go crazy with design it's a bathroom - especially one that isn't used so frequently.

I am designing my downstairs bathroom which is very small, basically a powder room with a small corner shower.

How big is 'very small' in square feet?

You have a chosen a lot of divas. Be careful. They will fight each other and may end up clawing your eyes out.

These new photos are much better, but still confused as to if the floor tile is blue or charcoal/black?

I love the sink (would opt for the bolder design) and think it should be the star; with other choices nor competing, but adding. Thinking big picture is really important and consider how you want the bathroom to feel overall; you can get impact by going dark vs using competing tile, which would really highlight the sink.

Find tiles (in any pattern) that better complement the sink and suggest a classic, simple tile in shower.

Don’t do a vessel sink. Big mess. Your version with integrated sink is best.

How exciting! Something that isn't boring. That bold sink is absolutely stunning. The carving, the veining, the fluting. This bathroom seems the perfect space - a bit punch in a little space.

It takes a ton of skill to be able to pull off mixing and matching that kind of bold design with so many different textures, finishes, patterns, and tile sizes. It can be done really well or take a quick turn south. Certainly do the sink. Ponder whether you can pull off all of the other finishes you are selecting. Maybe the shower tile needs to be a slightly different shade of neutral? I actually think the floor tile seems too subdue and doesn't go with the sink. The sink looks like real stone and the floor looks like a faded marble knock off. Does the floor come in other color patterns?

Love that this is going in a Spanish Colonial. I don't at all mind these busy designs together in theory. You .just need to make sure you nail it. Do you have pictures of the hallway or other areas near this bathroom?

Love the sink! I am in agreement about the floor tile. I really like it but not with the sink. You could do a shaped design, but more monochromatic with a matching grout so it is interesting but toned down. I agree about the richer wall color to make that sink and the brass really stand out !

Please be sure to post pictures on this thread when you are done!

Neither of those sinks if you love the tile. Only one thing can star, and those two are competing for attention.

I don't know if this scale is right for your size bathroom, but the same company that makes the floor you like also has an arabesque in a color called magnolia. It is more saturated and could look good with the first sink and shower tiles.

Yeah, looked at tgevmagnolia blend today. the tiles are too large, but i can so that same color on the smaller tiles

Sabine, what color is the original tile you were interested in? If blue, I agree that the magnolia would be a better choice.

Hi all, here is another pic of original tile next to the sink marble.

Its a handmade cement tile. its not meant to emulate marble, its a unique , organic material with a ton of variation. its a dark gray/charcoal that is combined with their ” hacienda” color cross hich is a tan color. its a very popular tile in California. It lends itself well for the spanish style homes here. Mynhouse is a spanish revival bungalow and the interior furnishings are coastal, spanish and vintage all in one.

i originally gravitated towards that bold sink because the colors actually blend well with thr tile… the gray and gold veins. the fluted edge has curves like the star.

i might be over thinking it!

Your original pictures make the tile look tan and blue; which is why myself and likely others were against it. I think it could work for an overstated look as long as it's charcoal or black, but I agree with those that suggested that bright white grout might not be the best choice. I would go with whichever colorway coordinates best with the sink.

BTW, if this is for your guest bathroom I'd really love to see what the primary looks like. Just saying....

No everyone hates it because it is too busy!

Your sink is the star. Everything else should be simple and almost feel like it's not there. Meaning pick a floor tile without additional colors in it. If that cement tile were two solid colors, versus the mottled colors, it could work.

The pic you posted more recently makes the marble sink much more subdude. The blackish veins seem more muted and Im noticing more tan veining as well. Maybe theese could work after all?

I looked at other pics of your floor tile and it still seems almost too pastel for your sink. A bit too blue.

I think that allowing only one piece to be the star is a safe and often boring approach. Your style sounds awesome. Keep looking at higher end online mags for more inspiration pics. 1st Dins, AD.

I’m curcurious what companies male other cement tiles that have different hues.

Question - is the sink made out of Calacatta viola marble? It looks like it is. If it is, it’s not gray veining - typically it’s described as a soft white marble with cabernet hued veining.

I have also been looking at a wall mounted marble sink for my powder room renovation - although I am now leaning towards having an undermounted sink instead of an integrated marble sink.

I have seen many sinks similar to the ones you’ve posted on Etsy - Aegean Marble offers their sinks in various marbles, including Calacatta Gold, but that looks like Calacatta Viola:

Make sure that you post photos of whatever you decide + the bathroom when it’s finished!

Look at that bathroom @dani_m08 posted. That floor tile is no shrinking violet and it looks great with the sink. @sabine halfhill that should be encouraging. Go for it!

K L - I actually kind of wish that my hardwood floors didn’t extend into the powder room - I’ve viewed MANY photos of powder rooms with marble floating sinks/vanities that have been paired with really pretty floor tiles!

@dani_m08 don't marble and wood look great together? If you like it, why not get the marble vanity?

I have decided to highlight the floor and not the sink. I love the Arto floor… I used Arto hex tiles in my last house and they are truly unique.
I did get my hands on some tile samples to see the true colors. Also, you can see here how nicely the shape ties in with some other elements of my home.

Beautiful! I love the star and cross motif and wish it could find a place in my home. If you have ideas...

@S Hill, are you the original poster? The actual tile samples you are showing look so much better than the pics you originally posted. The real life colors are lovely and I can see the attraction. I also think a marble sink would look great with it.

Is this meant to be floor tile and not just wall tile? I ask because there are so many crevices and uneven surfaces. It seems like it could be an unsanitary and hard to clean choice for a bathroom. Have you asked the manufacturer?

Kendrah , yes im the original poster… it seems as though i log into different accounts depending on whether I’m using my ipad or laptop.

I’ve used this tile in a bathroom before. the trick it to seal it really well. no issues keeping it clean.

I still think you could make the sink work with it :)

This is a dilemma that I keep returning to…because, while I initially posted that I thought there was too much going on, that the sink is the star, etc…. I am not sure now. I keep revisiting that gorgeous sink. And looking at your proposed floor. And now, well….I say…”GO FOR IT!” Why? Everything you have chosen is gorgeous in its own right. The floor is classic for your home. The shower is simple, but hand made, tile. Yes, the sink it bossy. But, you clearly love it! So, I retract my initial thought. Do it.

Yes to the star and cross with the marble sink. And yes to the other tile in the pic with the star and cross. Now you have it working beautifully together. Please come back and post when it's done.
