Mixing up patterns in bedroom

last year

In our bedroom, we have one wall of patterned wallpaper and a patterned rug. I have always had a solid color quilt on the bed, which is king size. No duvet covers for me; quilts only (see: hot flashes). Can I get away with patterned bedding? I love a mix of patterns and the coziness of a boho look, but also don’t want to create chaos. Here are a couple pics from the room as is, hard to see the rug but you get the idea.

PS I’d love a new bed with a design that eliminates the bed skirt.

A couple of quilts I found, not sure if I’m convinced yet. Other ideas?

A lot of quilts that are b&w are too WHITE. There is no white in this room, so white is not going to work. Creamy off white or a beige is ok.

Obvs doesn’t gave to be black, but so far that’s what I have found. A muted rose works too. Green is tricky because of the rug, and the walls are a muted green too even though they look beigey in the pic.

No advice from me, I'm not good at this.

I like the way it is now but I am a fan of throw pillows. I like a square one and a neck roll.

I actually do use them when I use my bed to read.

I can see two patterned throw pillows there.

I like what you have now. Would you consider just swapping out the pillows rather than the whole bedding set? Or adding some patterned throw pillows?

I don’t do extra pillows! Actually, I do have a long lumbar type pillow, patterned, and it only makes it back onto the bed when my cleaning people are here 2x a month. I am the laziest bed maker.

Maybe just patterned shams and a throw blanket…

I love to mix patterns and think WM ones are especially suited for it.

I have a Strawberry Thieves pillow in my bedroom, with lots of other patterns, but I’ve moved it around the house and it goes with everything. :)

    Maybe some WM inspo rooms:

Yes to patterned shams and a throw. You remind me of Ed Begley Jr who called pillows on the bed a govt make work project...all you do is throw them on the bed when you make it and take them off when you undo it....like digging a hole to just fill it again!

Oooh thanksis, Jilly! That’s exactly the sort of look I like!

I love the rooms Jilly shared, especially the fourth one. I use a quilted cover on our bed and another cover (quilt or duvet) folded at the bottom of the bed. We have a chest at the end of our bed, so it's easy to just pull the covers down to to the chest (they are not used, we use a top sheet and blanket or quilt as actual covers). More pillows would make such a difference! I use a set of euros in back, then standard shams and a long pillow in front. They sleep in an armoire in our bedroom that hubby outfitted with shelves great for extra bedding!). It's really no big deal adding a few pillows, it's habit for me. I love a pretty bedroom! As for patterns, I like William Morris, and your wallpaper is great. But I would be careful with how many WM prints I used in the room so that it doesn't become "theme-y".

@jilly can you share where the 4th pic is from? If there's an Instagram account, I'd love to look at it (like I need more instagram haha!).

  • last year

Hmm … maybe this could work.

Beautiful wallpaper in your bedroom, Sue. The difference I see in all your example photos, with the exception of one, the wallcovering is tone on tone, while the quilt is the big pattern. A good mix of patterns in a room is a large pattern, a small pattern, a stripe and/or a check. Vary pattern size (don't use two the same size visually). Use similar colors.

  • last year

I agree with Allison. I don't think a floral quilt is the answer.

  • last year

Thanks, Allison. Those were Jilly's pics, not mine, just FTR.

I was not considering a floral quilt. Shams maybe, if I could find the right floral.

  • last year

I would love the black check, or a sage and cream check with your wallpaper, but in a smaller scale.

  • last year

Oh, also should have mentioned I have a charcoal quilt too. Also solid but textured.

Some more ideas to toss out.

The solid/embroidered sham comes in a slew of colors, including various rose and greens.

    One more

I love mixing patterns and the inspiration pictures from Jilly are great. Generally, I think the most successful rooms of mixed patterns have balance as Allison stated and at least one large quiet/solid element…wall, bed cover, rug or upholstered chair, for instance.

  • last year

I think anything geometric in the same color tones would look great. I also like the idea of keeping the solid quilt and just adding a geometric pattern blanket/duvet folded at the end of the bed. Not for sleeping since you're a hot sleeper. Just for looks. I think having the solid quilt giving the eye a place to rest is important when mixing patterns. At least it is for me. Too much is too chaotic for me.

Tina, sorry, just saw your question … here is her IG:

The two patterns that you show are the same size as the pattern that you have on the wall - that's where chaos is created. If you analyze the patterns in the pics that Jilly posted the patterns are all different sizes and different shapes within each photo and that's why they work.

I think a stripe would work really well such as the pillow that you just posted but a different colour or a mix of colours such as what is in your wallpaper.

Jumped ahead to share my approach to pattern matching (artwork excluded)

    One bold pattern.

One small pattern that plays off the dominant color from the bold

One geometric that is larger than the small, but much smaller than the bold.

    Plus a quiet solid

I'm not good at the pattern thing but wondered if you could use a boxspring cover in place of the bed skirt?

I like the lighter rose color options posted. (Sorry, I tend to read posts but not who writes them.)

I also like the pink on the bed. I would add a darker color for the end of the bed and a set of shams. I would love to see how the charcoal looks mixed in as I think you have enough green.

Thanks Jilly! I'm sure I will enjoy looking through her feed! : )

Tina, I just discovered her today (looking for examples for Sue) … I’ll go check out her page further. So far seeing lots of florals! :D

I love the checks in Jilly's first pic and would probably look for something similar. Would look great in your pretty room, IMO!

The only checks I am seeing in the right scale are the wrong colors. I suppose beige could work. However, these are $150 each which is nuts.

Some interesting options from CB2 and Room & Board…

I wonder how this would look? Hard to tell exact colors from online photos. It has the cute gingham check on the reverse.

I think it has to be a check and I don't think it can be black. This is a duvet cover but I wonder if you could just get someone to make sheets or a Duvet cover into a thin quilt

    Do any of these work?

Textured pattern rather than an explicit print pattern. (Lots of color options.)

Geometric but not quite stripes or check.

    https://www.potterybarn.com/products/sweet-july-geo-coverlet/

Pattern might be too close in size and background might be too white, but the subtle pattern seems like it might work with the more bold wallpaper.

Jilly's article on the Hudson Valley Victorian addition had this pattern on pattern bedroom, with the quilt a riff on the color and wallpaper pattern:

I wondered about pulling out the gold. I looked for a graphic, twining quilt but couldn't find one. But I think a pattern like the green quilt could work with your gorgeous wall.

Wait! How about adding a brown to the pink?

Serena and Lily half price. Color is called Mink.

Add a throw pillow, this is also Mink.

And look at this quilt from Target.

    So charming!

Agh, this is the throw pillow also on sale at S&L.

  • last year

I ordered the S&L and Target stuff…will report back. All returnable, just didn’t want to miss out on a sale!

  • last year

Received a small catalog from (of all places) Home Depot today. Saw this, and immediately thought of you --- large print, small repeat print, solid and small stripe.

  • last year

    Ohh I like those sheets!

  • last year

I like the pink and brown, but does the wallpaper have brown or is it black/charcoal?

  • last year

The wallpaper has black but also shades of brown and tan. Hard to see but the stems are brownish. (They look more gold here, at least on my screen, but IRL the ”gold” is more brown.

Ordered these shams too plus one Euro since they are also on sale (but returnable). Of course this led to also ordering new fall pillow covers for the living room so I think I’ll stop shopping now! 🫢

    I really like the shams.
