I’m trying to decide what wall color &rug goes w/ orange velvet couch

I’m doing a living room refresh and trying to decide what wall color & rug combo will go well with this new couch. Looking for glam, mid-century modern vibes.

I just knew that had to be Southern California ^. Love it.

Jilly, I'm of a different opinion and I was talking to the OP.

Right. As someone who posted pictures for the OP, I was just responding to your comment about that —

”Most of the orange sofas people are posting in photos don't have the channel back your sofa has. So don't forget that when you are picking a rug that those vertical channels are making a very strong statement in your visual space, and whatever more straight lines you add has to work well with that rhythmic march of channels.”

Jolly? Agressive???? She’s one of most helpful, positive, and unfailingly kind posters on Houzz. Wow, smh.

Chinacat, thank you, I appreciate that!

I can be sarcastic at times, I’ll confess to that. 😁

Jilly- I’m sorry my phone decided to call you “Jolly”, lol.

I love (and appreciate) all of the advice, comments and inspiration pictures! Just to clarify and answer a couple of questions:

    1. correct that the photo i posted was inspirational and not the exact couch or decor. I was posting for the color.
    2. i pulled the trigger and actually purchased an orange couch from the same company but diff style. Updated picture below.
    3. my living room is east facing so i get a ton of natural light.
    4. i will have gold accents (bookshelf and side table
    5. I’m thinking of a beige-ish paint color like Benjamin Moore Latte or Cedar Key instead of a dark wall (the dark navy walls are gorgeous but i can’t commit to them in a small living room)

It would be best to choose your rug after you get your sofa, then decide wall color last.

    What is your flooring?

I'd love to see what you come up with!

Here's some inspiration with variations of the 3 primary colors: orange, navy, & ochre

@DesigningZ are you trying to duplicate the look in the original photo you posted? Are you looking for rugs like that one?

Wall color: BM Pale Oak would be a beautiful backdrop for the proposed sofa and would also be a nice complement to any of the suggested rugs.

Thanks. No I’m not trying to match the rug. I’m open to suggestions. Right now i just have a natural oak, glossy wood floor.

I was thinking Benjamin Moore Latte or BM Basking Ridge Beige. They are warm neutrals with a touch of peachy brown undertone. Do folks think that will clash?

Pale Oak and Revere Pewter seems so muddy.

These are the BM colors with the couch swatch attached

    Benjamin Moore

I love the blue rug Kelly posted!

Of the two samples just above I would choose the Latte color. The Basking Ridge Beige could easily be renamed Flesh. 🙁

I would go with warm beige/natural/taupe/brown theme

Can you take a pic of the flooring with those samples? Because honestly I can't envision the sofa with peachy brown walls going well with shiney oak floors.

Here's the link to the rug: (I was solely looking at style w/o consideration to size or material.)

Here is the floor (it is getting redone next week, but just sanding and gloss, same color)

I think SW Black Fox would be amazing in your space. I don't think it world make the room feel smaller. I'm sorry you don't want to consider it, but I respect your wishes.

Now that Kswl said the other color looks like flesh i can’t unsee it lol. I’m still chuckling

Another rug option? (Totally feel free to tell me if you hate it, I’m definitely new to this)

I can see it working. Kind of reminds me of this vibe:

No opinion on the rug really -- which doesn't mean nay or yay - just no opinion but I would be extremely careful about not picking a peach or any off-orange paint for the walls.

so here is your sofa and rug close together

You have definitely got a juicy fruit orange sofa, and you can see the pros used orange fruit to market the rug, so that's a good sign! The feeling I get from the 2 together is preppy not glam if that matters to you. (The photo shooters apparently also thought jeans and crew socks were the right vibe.)

The background color of the rug is one you might consider for a neutral wall paint, even if you don't buy this rug. Some kind of canvas sail white, or stone white, or restaurant coffee mug white.

This is a very inexpensive outdoor indoor rug but I rather like it. It might be that the fabric of your sofa is too lux for something this beachy and rough textured, plus the 2-tone color might not be quite right either for your vision of the room. (I would hide most of the sandy beach under the sofa). Definitely not glam but something sort of Mediterranean island... You might even be able to pick up one of the lighter tones of this rug for your walls (unless you hate the whole thing!)

It really depends on the look that you want and you have to remember it is your space. A peach based type of paint could offer a nice feeling -

I attempted to color match your second color choice.

This below is much more peach than the colors you are choosing, but you see it is done, and can work.

And this is the color you had chosen shown below - the Basking Ridge Beige; imo it’s a beautiful color.

It all depends on how the color works in your space, with your lighting.

@Lori Sawaya had recommended a gorgeous peachy type color to someone on another post. I think it was from an archive collection. Maybe she will see this and chime in.

I dunno. It's like mixing peaches and citrus fruits. I think only the 3rd photo is pleasant. For the 2d photo, blue is doing a lot of the heavy lifting, and half the orange sofa is obscured by pillows.

Mainly I just think it is quite a risk. It's just paint, so it can be painted over, but it will be quite a lucky hit to get just the right peach with that sofa. If you start with pillows, you might be able to zero in on which peach is the one you want on the walls, and take it to a paint store.

Since the floor is getting redone I suggest just dragging the orange sofa -- or at a minimum a cushion -- over to the wall where the paint samples are (and drag the other furniture away)

I wish I could, but the sofa doesn’t arrive for 3 more weeks…and the painters and floor guys are coming next week

MCM is off white walls in eggshell finish. The bottom far right paint sample or a shade lighter would be the right pick.

If you are going for "glam modern vibes", paint a dramatic dark color on walls and BM Decorators White on ceiling and trim with a light rug. Accessories and the right art, will get you to the room aesthetic. It's a good sofa, but is not the focal point of a room, it's about the layers.

@DesigningZ I can say from personal experience with an off-white with orange undertones that it looks great in a south-facing room and turns to mud in a north-facing room. Which is yours again?

@Denise Marchand I'm with you on that look. SW Black Fox was used by another poster with an inherited orange sofa and it was wonderful for the moody intellectual effect she was after, but I like your layered look... less moody, more sumptuous. I think the effect DesigningZ is after is different look and feel. More of a peacefully content look. Not everyone is after the excitement of glam, I've learned. 🥴 It's too sensual and emotional for most people. I still love it though.

Love those moody looks @Denise, but for my smaller space I’m going for a softer, warm vibe. I have a east facing room—so very bright mornings.

I can buy a car faster than picking a paint color! And I've been doing it for over 40 years!

I have an north east facing place and when the sun moves, it becomes moody even with light walls.

Consider looking at Donald Kaufman Paints. The pigments are dense and changes to incredible tones depending on the light. DKC-36 is a color I would recommend. It's a greyish purple and is gorgeous. It seems dark in the below swatch, but in reality it is not. What I like is red undertones especially with orange.

More on color: Design Seeds Color Palettes have always been my go-to for color inspiration.

@DesiningZ an east facing room can have lovely pink morning light. That could really be nice with the orange. A morning glow! I bet it will be nice with your morning coffee. And at night you can use a lower Kelvin lighting to bring a warm golden glow to the room. Should be nice!

"Another rug option? (Totally feel free to tell me if you hate it, I’m definitely new to this) "

It's a nice enough looking rug, but doesn't say MCM OR glam. Have you changed your mind in the direction you want to go?

It also looks like it will be very hard to keep clean.

What bright cheery morning colors! Perfect for a morning room!

Looks good! I think you can bump it a little further though. Lower your art a bit.

The art height was a bit of a snafu. But love the blue wall. I’ll start with blue blinds…i don’t think i can commit to the full blue wall. Thank you!

Starting to come together. the tv looks pretty high as well can you lower it along with the art?

It looks nice but the sofa seems to be off center to the carpet. Looks like it's off the carpet at the far end and too much room on the near side.

Scootch the sofa toward the camera and the space under the window will be less cramped...it seems like wasted space with the blanket folded there.

I think a pale aqua or turquoise would also look fabulous with an orange sofa.

Any of the blues are nice with the orange. Your idea for just using a window treatment with the blue is also nice. I like the window shade Paul used, and also look on Etsy; there are some sellers there with really unique items. I think a plum/eggplant color in your space could also be amazing. I think someone further up in the thread showed a room with that color combo.

On an unrelated note: Is anyone else having problems with the site? I can pull up discussions but cannot access the comments, and cannot post new comments.

I can apparently comment on posts I’ve previously commented on, and read comments on these posts. However, I can do all of this only if I access it through my Houzz “Activity” menu, and only if I am on Desktop mode on my iPhone. (Which all I use of late is an iPhone and I don’t use the Houzz app.) I’ve never had this issue before, so not sure if it’s site related.
