Are you planning on having lighting over the mirror or on the sides? How high are the ceilings?

Because of the narrowness of the bathroom, I was planning to do lighting over the mirror. It is an 8 foot ceiling.

I might be tempted to do a wider mirror. Kohler has one 30 inches wide and 26 inches tall that might work.

There is no standard width. Depends on the design of the bathroom.

In my previous house I used this recessed medicine cabinet from Robern in one of the secondary bathrooms. Nearly as wide as the 36" vanity. Had integrated LED lights. Left door is wider than the right one.

I think a relatively standard 24 or 30 wide, 36 tall would work, but honestly, get it as big as you need -- medicine cabinet space is fab!

(I note that a large squared cabinet tends to go with more modern style, although once you recess it, you can do any size up to the size of the vanity.)

I think you can go any size with the width. Narrow will read more classic and wider will read more contemporary. Have you selected a light fixture yet? 8" ceilings are not all that high, some light fixtures are really tall, as are a lot of faucets these days. Add up the distance from the bottom of your light fixture to the top of your faucet, then subtract enough space to get a balanced look, and that will help determine the height of your medicine cabinets.

Thanks all. I plan to go back to the house soon and measure everything so like Kendrah said that will help determine the height. I was not as focused on the height as I was with the width!
