Looking for ideas for Living Room Rug

last modified: 2 years ago

I am tasked with finding an area rug for the living room. It is my parents' house and they are leaning towards another blue rug. What they have now is a blue and white rug with golden or dark yellow accents and it doesn't go with anything in the room. In fact, looking around the room, I see I variety of color and theme conflicts that I would like to resolve.

First, the upholstery of the furniture is a solid medium grayish blue for two identical chairs (in photo showing only one of the chairs) and the upholstery for the couch is a strong floral pattern with pinks and ivory in it (see photo).

Second, it's a hardwood floor and there are wooden pieces or furniture and shelving that don't necessarily match already let alone match with a rug - or should they? Maybe the stain color of the wooden rocking chair (see photo), end tables, coffee table, lamps, record case, lamps, etc. don't affect the color and pattern choice of the area rug - I don't know enough about this stuff to know one way or the other so I'll include photos of close-ups of the upholstery of the sofa, close-up of the wallpaper in the room as well as a photo of a corner of the room where the curio cabinet, sofa and end table is shown and another photo of the opposite corner of the room where you may view the other upholstered furniture, the chair (both chairs in the room are the exact same) as well as the rocking chair, etc.

Third, the wallpaper doesn't match anything else.

I currently have a burgundy cover over the sofa and may need to cover the chairs as well since I have cats who have started tearing the upholstery and hence, need a barrier between them and the chairs. Therefore, I could make the couch a different color than burgundy as there are different color couch barrier covers out there. The same is true for the chairs if another color would look better than the blue.

I'm looking for the best option for an area rug preferably around 8' x 10'. If anyone has ideas I would so appreciate the opportunity to read about them.

Thank you. in advance for your idea(s).
