How to address the depth of mantle shelf?

Hi there, attached are images of my fireplace mantle shelf. I need some advice. I ordered this in depth 9” and height 5”. After installation, it is looking too deep to me. I feel it’s one of those things that we just acknowledge after full installation, and I’m feeling that way.
Although my previous mantle was 12” but it was a surround and tiles around fireplace were bricks so the previous didn’t look so protruded.

What would you suggest me to do?
1: Leave it as it is, and my eyes will adjust after some time?
2: Put some kind of molding on sides of tiles to make look more filled?
3: Get it changed?

The depth looks fine in picture. How much is it actually protruding from wall & from fireplace front? Does it extend the same amount on each side of FP? It looks like it might but with the corner & short space on left & longer wall on right it’s hard to tell. What’s the plan for art / tv / items to place on & over mantel? With nothing there your eye goes to mantel because that’s all there is to look at. The color of it is nice with the FP tile surround.

That’s a nice depth. Layering in items on it will create a vignette that will be very pleasing. I will do a mock up to give you inspiration. Bbl

Without knowing what your style preferences are and seeing this fireplace seems placed right next to kitchen or cabinetry I just tried a few items to show potential. Of course the items would be placed to show dimension which is hard to depict here. I would like a photo straight on but further back to get better perspective. You could use art as main feature too depending on what a mirror would reflect here.

Varying heights of items also creates interest. Notice I place tallest on left and stepped down across the mantel.

The depth isnt your issue and in fact is on the shallower side as mantles go. The inbalance visually is your tile. You have too much "overhang" on the sides. It makes it look incomplete. I dont think moulding is going to give you the clean look i imagine youre going for but i woud extend the tile. Note in all these photos how the mantle doesnt extend but about 3" or less past the tile.

Flo, thanks so much!! Your mock-up made it look more real and pleasing!

Design Interior, thanks for sharing those images. Initial plan was to take the tiles all the way to the end on left side, but we were having issues with the tile end pencils. Due to the curved nature of the pencils we couldn’t put them in the corner so decided to center the tiles in a way that creates a border around.
The mantle however was ordered before the tiling decision changed and is one of those things that I didn’t think would make it look awkward.

There’s going to be some filler and cabinetry panel on right that will cover that big open gap on the right side so I am not worried about the big open wall space on right.

However I do want to make sure that depth of the mantle 9” is good and not too much .

    Thanks !

Also the gap on each side between the tile end and mantle end is about 3.8

What room is this FP in? Looks like you’re having a large remod project. Any chance of relocating the pot light on right of FP to center?

You can distract the eye from the right side with a draping plant. I would like your tile better if tiler would have lined up vertical stripping better.

Fireplace is in family room. This is the main wall of the room which has built-in for tv on one end and fireplace on another.
Yes, it’s full kitchen and family room remodeling and this room is connected to the kitchen.
We don’t have wiring but I recently found a way to add any sconces with battery operated bulbs so I can add those. What would you suggest?
Below are old pictures but may give you idea of the wall we are referring to.
    Thanks a bunch !

I get it now - space next to FP is for TV & I see a ’matching’ pot light above that space. I wouldn’t do sconces over FP but would have large art hung there - sized as close to width of FP as you can - so not as wide as mantel.

I cut and pasted a vision of this wall together. Not sure what your “built in” is going to look like, and coloration on line are terrible but this might help.

You are going to have two black “holes” so it will be a challenge to make this wall look cohesive. The fire box and TV. I am thinking about that.

Here is look with big art over fireplace. Of course, you have to pick art.

I think the style of your built in will be very important. Your fireplace is likely ok’ing pretty modern so watch you don’t go too traditional on your built in design.

Sorry for the crazy auto corrects. I meant “looking” pretty modern.
