Which sconces do you like for my dining room?

last year

Here are two views of the room. We have different chairs now but the rest is the same.

We are planning to add sconces on the fireplace wall and a picture light over the painting on the other wall.

We are also getting a gas FP, which is kinda how this all got started. Can you say Scope Creep?

So far this is what I am liking.

(I would add a shade to this one.)

Anyone care to vote?

The chandelier is bronze, so I want sconces in the same family.

I prefer a sconce with a shade. I think bare bulbs are too harsh (says the woman with 2 chandeliers that have bare bulbs😉)

I like the last 2 best.

  • last year

    The last one:

Another vote for the last one.

I like #2 and #5. We recently bought sconces for our dining room but I put that project on hold till after the holidays. I want to have fabric covered shades. Not sure if I can do it myself or will have it done. All thanks to one I follow on Instagram; loved a fabric sconce shade she has. Being as I like to change things (rolling eyes here); we're not going to hardwire, we're going to use the "magic" light bulb.

Add the last one as my vote.

I really like the second to last (4?) -- the taller shade is just so distinctive and looks like it will work in your room ... but the last one may work better depending on how high they are.

What do you think about something like THIS? Where it's more artsy.

I think you need a round element in the room; my vote is for

#1 (simple, nod to history of house, trend proof) OR

#4 (updated profile, can change size, style and color of shade for a different look).

    I love #4.

#1 seems like the best fit for the age and style of the house, but definite yes to adding a shade.

#1 is not funky enough for you

    #2 is too industrial

#3 is ok but I need a side view - not a big wow but ok

#4 has your name on it and gets my vote

    #5 is runner up

Went back to read and Funky makes a good point about size so my vote hinges on actual placement and size of fixture which is hard to tell in the photos.

    I like #1 w/shade and #4. And maybe #5.

Thinking #4 because of a more modern shade, but do you know how tall the shade is?

4 is my favorite but 1 is most fitting for your architecture in my opinion.

#4 is my favorite because of the height of the shade and overall look. #5 a close second depending on its overall height.

Ok so the favorites here are also my favorites. 1, 4, and 5.

I did/do wonder if 4 is a bit too modern. I know I have a mix of styles but I have kept the installed light fixtures throughout the house very traditional, as though they came with the house although none are circa 1900.

I really love number 5 too. It seems like it could be interpreted as either traditional or modern, and something about the little details is just yummy.

I love number 1 because I adore these sconces at the Beacon Hill Bookstore and of course I could have some fun with shades. And I do like the ”roundness” of it.

After eliminating 2 and 3, I think I would eliminate 4 because it seems too modern, but I am going to look at measurements of all three again and maybe do a mockup on the wall. Stay tuned.

    1, 4, and 5:

is your 2 above actually #4 that you eliminated? or did i misunderstand?

FWIW I don't think of 4 as modern in the context of your room-- I see it as interesting and unexpected -- which is what I associate with your style. Still, if you have kept all your lighting traditional, it may be a little too far out of range but will wait to see your mockups!

Oops, thanks Funky, I fixed my numbers!

  • last year

I'm torn between 4 and 5, but will vote for 4.

  • last year

Yes, the Beacon Hill Bookstore inspiration confirms #1 for me!

  • last year

This is the approx size of number 1, with a shade I’m guessing maybe 1-2” taller?

And this is the size of number 5.

Number 4 is one inch taller than number 5. Shade is 8” H and in number 5 it is 5”.

    All are 4,5”-5” wide.

Here is my concern with sconce 1: it is 7” deep without a shade. So with a shade, maybe 9” deep? The others are 6” deep with the shade. My mantel is only 4” deep and this is a frequent traffic path. I think number 1 needs to go.

My style is what I call casual traditional. I much prefer #3 over #1. It's more interesting, has a shade, and is more transitional than #1, which is a bit stodgy. I also prefer a rectangular plate over a round one. I think #3 comes the closest to the Beacon Hill Bookstore sconce.

I also like #5, mainly because of the brass candle.

#5 for me. I think you definately need the square shape and I like it much better than the other #3 square-shaped one.

Five for me as well. Number four has too much going on to my eye with your area that you are putting it in. You want it to be a nice complement to your area but unless you want it to be it is not a piece of art that should be noticed too much. To me that's five.

Five is the winner and is my favorite too! I just sent an email to my electrician to make sure he doesn't see any issues, and I will order. Merry Christmas to me.

I think I will go with an art light that is very plain; like this one.

We also talked with him about adding a picture light in the living room, but the wall where the painting is hung is potentially problematic in terms of adding a hardwired fixture. DH and I later realized it would be easy (and so much less $) to just add a plug-in picture light there and the cord will be mostly behind the sofa. We can add a command hook to the cord so it's easily reachable (but still hidden) behind the sofa. It's worth a try, anyway.

I like number 5 on its own, but I’m not sure if I would like it with your chandelier. If you can return one, I would probably buy one of each and see them in the room. It’s always tough for me to judge scale from a picture.
