Deciding on a rug and a sofa color to go with two floral chairs

I have two of these chairs in my living room. The floors are light hardwood and the walls are a lighter gray (the darker wall is a smaller accent wall around the fireplace). It is a 100 year old traditional house. The living room gets nice east and southern exposure so it is not dark by any means.

I have two dilemmas:

(1) what color sofa and

(2) what color style area rug

Thanks

Can we see the room from a few different angles?

Which do you want to be the star of the show? Chairs, sofa or rug?

I'm thinking those chairs are the divas.

I would do a green sofa. Rug could be a pink/ green combo.

They are beautiful! I would go with neutral/natural color for sofa.

Take some ideas from Johnathan Adler designer.

Any color you pick from your chairs would work great.

I would do a fabulous tufted chesterfield in v\black leather and then a textured rug in the softest green. I would look for silk rug handmade is green from the chair but not the really intense green I love thios echairs I would put them in a space with the most contemporary black silk sofa I coulld find they are fab and do not need to be in a traditionl space at all if you wanted to go in a different direction

So many possibilities. It’s hard to say not seeing the room, your decor style, what other furniture will be in the room, how you live (kids, pets, lots of entertaining, what your budget is, etc).

I do like olive with the chairs, and a rug with a subtle pattern (you could have some fab pillows on the sofa):

But if you lean more maximalist, the rug could certainly be more colorful and patterned.

And if you lean more minimal, you could do a neutral sofa and rug, leather or fabric.

More context would be very helpful.

Anyway, love those chairs! It’s so refreshing seeing florals (and colors) come back. :)

I didn’t see Patricia’s post before I posted mine. I like the idea of a black Chesterfield, so played around with her suggestions … except I used a more traditional style sofa:

I like the look, it’s got some drama to it. Very unique and interesting.

There really are so many directions you could go with these chairs (even modern).

I hope you’ll keep us updated!

If I was going all-out maximalist, I'd do a hot pink velvet sofa from Joybird. :-)

What do the curtains look like?

Jilly that is the exact sofa I meant . The green I think needs to be less vibrant to really show off the chairs but hard to find a rug that does not have a pattern and is not cheap looking. I am a contemorary girl but those i could work with easily as I mentioned in a really contemporary space . I would like to see the home these are is so if the OP is around how about some pics of the home please . Just post them here in comments .

Just wanted to say those chairs are stunning!

    Love the chairs.

Agree would go dark OR bright for sofa, so black, dark bottle green, raspberry. Maybe search room photos for inspo, also ponder your own aesthetic. The rug is harder—the chair upholstery is bright, crisp, cheerful, more high- contrast, so I’m not sure that muted, dusty colors will work in a rug even if technically ” green” or pink. But a solid cream or solid dark might be too high- maintenance for me. I might start by searching photos of rugs with clearer colors but subtle pattern, if such exists. Or geometric but not too dizzying. Or with a border. It could be important to have a way to try out & return, either via small version, or local company.

Anyway, would be thinking of rug & sofa together as you are doing, don’t rush, as could be, perfect rug leads to obvious sofa choice or vice versa.

Color is the easier decision. What is your room like - wall color, curtains, furniture, lighting - what style do you lean towards?

Did you want neutrals (couch/rug) so chairs stand out, complemented by bold art, cushions and maybe wall color? How comfortable are you with mixing patterns and styles. How do want room to feel and be sure to think long term for the couch decision especially. Consider the combinations and think big picture first.

Not sure how bold you're willing to go, but I'm feeling a Dorothy Draper vibe. Gotta have some black and white and vibrant color something somewhere!

The cabbage rose in the upholstery can lean pink or salmon. Are you daring enough to consider a colorful sofa?

love those chairs! Love the idea of the black Chesterfield - for rugs, I could also see a classic sisal to knock back the formality a bit - can't wait to see the final pics!

The black chesterfield is a good option. The pink ones from Beverly are more daring.

Can you tell us where you got the chairs. I love them!

What about something like a sofa with thin black and white stripes? Then you could add colorful cushions. So many possibilities. I couldn't find a picture that was quite what I was imagining, but I thought this might be easier to live with long-term than a bright pink sofa, as pretty as that is.

Is there another person whose taste needs to be considered? This pink one is beautiful too.

Not sure about the black and white stripe idea…Nancy - is this what you were thinking? A lot of b&w sofas are ticking stripe, which is too casual for that chair.

Red, wow, that pink sofa is gorgeous!

Yes, that fabric is in the Dorothy Draper / Carleton Varney style which was the antidote to MCM. I had some clients that liked that style but they're all dead or in their 90s. I don't think most men feel at home when all these florals and bright colors are used in rooms.

RedRyder, yes, I was thinking something similar to that. I'm not a designer, but an all-black sofa seemed a bit harsh to me. I was looking for a way to lighten things up.
