How to design around a Stickley vintage twin bed for 8 yo boys room?

last year

Hello! I've inherited two stickley twin beds and night stands from my dad. I want to use one bed in my 8 year old son's bedroom, but am unsure how to design around it.

My son's bedroom is 12 x 9 and the layout is below, including an inspiration photo. A photo of the bed and nightstand are also below. The room will be painted stonington gray (BM) and the windows, trim and closets are decorators white.

Will this rug work? And, if so, with which comforter? Please share other accessory ideas, too. Design is not my strength! Thank you.

Rug: https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/birch-lane-kage-monte-browngrayblack-classic-plaid-area-rug-w009611217.html?piid=1410929468

Comforter: https://www.pbteen.com/products/windward-stripe-quilt-sham-dark-navy/?pkey=cteen-quilts-and-comforters (Green or light chambray) OR https://www.pbteen.com/products/camden-comforter-sham/?cm_src=WsiECartRvi%26recstrat%3DRVI%7CRVI (navy or green)

Here is the layout a designer gave me and an inspiration photo:

And this is the bed frame and nightstand (below):

Won't he also need a desk or a table for homework?

Not sure there will be room?

Love that rug and think the green bedding choices will look good with it and with the orange/red undertones in the wood furniture. But, I do wonder if you can get one punch of saturated color in there. It seems a bit drab and grown up.

Thank you! Maybe I skip the nightstands and find something with color like you have pictured?

He's 8 years old ! Have you asked him what color he'd like his bedroom to be? I doubt his answer was gray!

You take him to a Target, or you put him in front of a lap top......

And you stop worrying the bed is cherry!, which is not a sin to PAINT!, ( black, navy......whatever

Kids rarely do homework in their rooms. They collect junk in their rooms. Shelves please

and that isn't the only arrangement

THE point is he is a kid....

Wow @Jan Moyer thank you - for thinking like an 8-year-old boy. Great ideas.

Sorry but the inspo picture with all those pillows doesnot suit an 8 year old

I agree with Jan this is a job for your son and you together it is his space so let him choose the bedding for sure . I likre keeping kids wall really neutral because most change the fave color often so easier to change the bedding than paint the walls . The beds are great gift , not my style but very nice for a kids space for sure .I don't even like tons of pillows on any bed and for sure not for a kid , it is hard enough to get them to make the bed .

Thank you, all! He’s a sports kid - not into Spider-Man, astronauts, etc, so that’s how I ended up with the PBK teen bedspreads (my other son has the striped spread @Jan Moyer suggested). We will definitely have pennants, sports art and a trophy shelf on his wall and a bazillion stuffed animals on his bed.

What do we choose first? His bedding, rug or accessories? I’m not sure where to start and love the idea of letting him choose.

Folks? We don't take inspo pics literally! The internet images of any bedding exist to sell you.

A quilt, a sham to hide the drooly pillow and done

He is eight!!! You will be lucky to see the floor in his room, and not find ants from junk food and candy.

My only point is the gray plaid horrid thing from way up above? It put MY FEET to sleep, and not in a good way.

I like the inspiration room you showed. My kids really knew what they wanted color/feeling wise by the time they were six - I would work around some bad ideas lol). Don’t be afraid of a bold color even just on a focal wall - get test pots. Try Ikea for fun/inexpensive rugs. Keep looking if unsure and even pro’s look for inspiration in various ways.

Has your son talked about what he would like, does he have a friend whose room he really likes/have a favorite interest/sport? Consider painting the set or even just the nightstands (change handles). See article if interested. https://refreshliving.us/best-paint-furniture/

Also, consider functionality; if one nightstand is used can you squeeze in a desk or bookcase, or bed placement along a wall to allow for more floor space to play.

My 9 year old twin grandsons like their smashmellows and space to play on the floor of their room. My daughter painter their room Nvy below wainscotting and white above. Navy is the basis for bedding, but they REALLY like the Starwars decals on the walls!

OMG This is not that hard!

    Let HIM pick his bedding

Find a rug that works with the bedding he LIKES

You get a lamp for the side table

You pick the pennants, posters he wants on the wall

Then you shut the damn door and hope he will use a laundry basket which IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ACCESSORY : ) : )

They come in lots of colors.........

Jan, you’re a pro! So it is not that hard for you, but it’s hard for me :) I very much appreciate the advice and will ask him to choose his bedding as a start, and then I may come back to you for rug ideas!

Okay.... Yes, you are correct, I do it for a living. But you'd be amazed at how much is just asking yourself....

mmmmm I'm eight. ....: ) what do I like to DO? What interests me?

Designers put themselves in the shoes of another.

Put yourself IN his shoes by making him a part of the process.

Your goal is a room that doesn't require a call to the board of health, and one you may even open the door to, occasionally. A room he may even like well enough to make his bed.

I am a realist. That too is part of the job, lol

If you ask him, he will tell you what color he wants for his room. Then you find 2 quilts in that color and he chooses one. Then you pick a rug. He decorates the walls any way he likes (posters, pictures, whatever). I would offer to him that you can paint the bed as well, but I would keep the walls neutral so the easier-to-change things can grow with him.

If he has an opinion for the walls, and you don’t love the idea, you can compromise by doing one wall that color. I agree with Jan that a laundry basket is an important part of this equation, and hope that he uses it.

I’m not too familiar with more modern iterations of Stickley furniture (these look to be closer to midcentury era vs the arts and crafts style the brothers were famous for), but if any of the furniture has a Stickley label I would refrain from painting it!

I put colorful 4x8 felt covered bulletin boards in my son’s room so he could hang what he wanted on them and change what was on them when he wished, worked very well. Kids rooms should definitely be driven by the notion of form follows function. Make it work for him, not you.

You all might laugh at my inability to figure this out :) Luke and I looked online last night and again this morning. We're going to go to Target this weekend. I made him a PowerPoint presentation with lots of different options, including wall decals, NFL and MLB comforters, a soccer sheet set, etc. He loves sports and is attached to his stuffed animal whale. Here's what he does like:

He likes this comforter and the color green: Washed Rapids Quilt | Pottery Barn Teen (pbteen.com)

He wants jerseys on his wall and trophies like this: Light-Up Jersey Holder | Pottery Barn Teen (pbteen.com) and Trophy Display Shelf | Pottery Barn Teen (pbteen.com)

He likes these prints, or something similar:

Personalized Name Basketball Modern Gallery Wall Set of 3 Downloadable Prints, Sport Boy Nursery Decor, Quote Play Wall Art, Printable - Etsy

He LOVES to golf and liked this sign:

Golf, Golf, Sign, Golf Fan, Golf Participant Gift, Golf Lover, Golf Course Decor, Golf Player, Custom Street Sign, Quality Metal Sign - Etsy

    or this sign:

Golf Custom Name Metal Sign, Golf Sign, Bar Sign, 19th Hole, Custom Golf Sign, Man Cave, Home Bar, Game Room Sign, Fathers Day, Golfer - Etsy

    Now what?

Would you do these shelves (or similar) next to his bed instead of night stands? If not, what color night stands?

Theo Modern Ladder Bookshelf Wood & Metal | Nathan James

And what about a rug? What color am I looking for?

Dash and Albert Rugs Denim Plaid Handmade Flatweave Cotton Denim/Ivory Rug & Reviews | Wayfair

Jaque Checkered Slate Green Rug | Ruggable

Thanks. I'd ask my designer, but am now swayed to work with my son on this. You're right! Help with next steps....I'd pay you!

I don't know why so many designers like drab colors, boring grays and sports for boys. If nothing else, get blue.

Love this room designed by Studio McGee....footballs over the bed. Scheme would look great with Stonington Gray. Notice one night table and one wall mounted, plug in lamp.

Another "he's only 8" thought: Whatever you choose won't last long! You will be lucky if it takes him through middle school. Gray is a sad color but it will keep you from repainting because it is a blah back ground. Choosing his favorite sports teams colors will mean repainting sooner than later. As suggested go to Target let him pick what strikes him. It will hold up about as long as he still likes what he picked. Designer rooms for people who grow and change their minds with the seasons makes no sense.

Just one thought: with a twin bed, one nightstand is plenty. One nightstand, one lamp, a clock, etc. That gives you a little more flexibility in placing the bed to leave easy access to the closet (if you put bed on the short wall) or to allow a little floor space for playing (if you put it on the long wall).

  • last year

Go with the green items he picked and the team he loves now. Save your money for the next teams he falls in love with.

Get him that adorable golf wastebasket from Jan.

I’m glad he didn’t pick blue. The green comforter is very rich looking.

The wall color can be any neutral that will look good with more sports posters in the future.

I truly wish ( maybe the I phone cuts off the thread) folks would understand the poster, suggestions to now, and the requests of the 8 yr old...
