living room design

last year

I am hoping to get some advice to make this living room feel cozier. It has been a challenge since the windows and built in bookshelves take all the wall space. I don’t like the tv over the fireplace since it is too high. Since we don’t use the fireplace, I put the piano on that side of the room. Something about it just doesn’t feel and look right. I’m thinking of taking out the built in cabinets by the fireplace and sheet rocking over the window on the wall by the tv. Does anyone have any other ideas on positioning furniture to make this better?
The room is entered from the foyer and the master bedroom is accessed near the piano. The room is 16 feet wide and 24.5 feet long. The piano is 5 feet wide and 5’9” long. Sofa is 7x10 feet sectional. Chairs are 3x3’ each.
I appreciate any advice! It has been something I’ve worked on for 8 years now!

You have a lot going on in that room with the doors and buit-ins. By just eyeballing it I might remove the two built-ins on the chair wall if there is room to hang the tv there, hard to tell if there is another arched door, but judging by the rest of the room there probably is. Anyway, if there is room for the tv you could squeeze in the two chairs on the current tv wall and end tables on either side of the sectional, then you have room for a coffee table. If not, the only other way I can think of is buying two sofas, one facing the tv, the other facing the wall to the right of the tv. That sofa will form a walk path to the bedroom hall. then a chair in the corner where the little window is. Then you have room for a coffee table. To test that, move the long part of the sofa where the chairs are, but pulled forward for the walk way. The chair might be too big for the corner, then either remove the window, console under tv, or leave the window, console under tv and big plant in the corner. Definately remove the cabinets near the fireplace, leave piano where it is. Again, hard to tell what would work without dimensions. It's a pretty room!

I would go with TV stand

My initial suggestion would be to place the TV to the right or left of the FP in place of the cabinets. Too many tall items in the room. Rotate the sectional to face the FP and TV and place the grand piano at the other end of the room.

IMO the drapes on the arched doors are not a plus. I would have addressed them with Plantation Shutters.

I need a to scale floor plan every window, doorway and ehre those lead Every meaurement clearly marked . On grap paper posted here in jpeg format in a comment DO NOT start another post . Is that a baby grand? IMO removing the bookcase from between the windws would be my first step and the cabinets on either side of the FP the next ones to go. BUt I need the floor plan please Post all things to do with this space in comments here both the drawing , pictures answers to our questions and any questions you have .

The seating area needs to be by the fireplace and the piano where you currently have the tv.

I appreciate the excellent advice. I agree that there are too many tall items in the room and also that the piano should not be in front of fireplace. I will attach better pictures and to-scale picture of the floor plan

The right Beth's pic represents not right position for piano.

The top should always open into the room for the best acoustics

Yes that’s true about the piano direction. And with the flat side close to the wall, it would leave more space in the room.

    It’s a beautiful room!!

The reason I initially had to keep the seating area on that side was the entrance to the bedroom would be odd in a living area, but, now that I see it's a hallway, I agree, to the fireplace location. I would love to see a mock up of the room with all the built-ins gone.

Yes, there is a small foyer leading to the bedroom. There is a changing table there now since we have small children.

It might be a good idea to remove the tall shelves on either side of the fireplace. Then maybe do a console with art over one side and a tall plant on the other. Then look at getting a long, low console for under the TV. Notice the long, low console under the TV in this design image below:

A beautiful room, but can see the challenges. I would paint the built-ins the same color as the wall. There's a lot going on with the wall that has the doors and windows. I would also build up the fireplace from floor to ceiling so it becomes more of the focal point. The TV on the side of the fireplace will work better with the scale then. That's a gorgeous piano!
