Kitchen finishing - subway and accent tiles? Range hood shelving?

last year

Fiancee and I are near the finish line of a new build, and figuring out tile for the kitchen. We want to do an accent behind the cooktop, so we found this nice 6"x6" tile, picked a pencil tile to go with it, and are planning on this green subway tile.

Photos of the kitchen as it stands today, and a rendering showing the range hood, are below

It's a 36" cooktop, with 44 5/16" wide range hood. The base cabinets to the side of the cooktop are 24".

As you can see, we chose to leave out upper cabinets next to the range hood, and originally weren't planning to do any floating shelves or anything at all. Our builder has suggested doing shelving, to give the tile a place to terminate, but I'm not sure we're on board with that idea.

To the right of the cooktop, we're planning on terminating the tile at the edge of the counter, leaving a few inches of drywall between the tile and pantry door trim.

The subway tile does have a bullnose version, so we're thinking of having the bullnose running vertically on the left and right sides (so, by the wall oven end, and the door-side end), then along the top edge, inline with the bottom of the range hood.

If we did shelves, they'd be pretty short, which we think might look strange. Also not sure if we were to do them, would we just do a single shelf on each side inline with the range hood, or do the more typical 2 shelves on each side, one below the hood, one above.

We also considered running the subway tile all the way up the wall, but not sure if that would be too much with the green tile?

The range hood should be getting installed this week, feel like I need to see that in before making a final decision, but just looking to make sure we're considering all options.

Would love to hear any thoughts/suggestions/ideas for this!

Wait until the hood is in, tops are in and walls painted in my opinion. Backsplash is the last choice and really needs to tie it all together as the finishing pieces. And I really see no good from shelves in that proximity to the stove top. I think everything will be dirty all the time, including the underside of the shelves.

Lovely tile choices! I tend to think no shelves around the stove area but I'm just not a fan of open shelving because of cleaning, etc.

Yes, we would suggest no shelving at hood as it would constantly need to be cleaned as millworkman noted. If you planned on doing tile to the ceiling, there would be no need for shelving.

Also, as joycedjay and Kay p noted, having a blue island with green tile in close proximity wouldn't compliment each other. Would suggest going with a more neutral color for the subway tile such as the white to match the accent tile. This will give prominence to the accent tile over the field tile.

Thanks for the feedback on the shelving! I love the LOOK of open shelving next to range hoods, but we were planning to avoid them because of the mess. Our current house has glass door uppers on each side of our microwave hood vent, and that glass gets very nasty, very quickly, which is why we had been planning to completely skip anything up there.

This is the countertop we're doing, Calacatta Viraldi, which has some greens. Wall color is Sherwin Williams Opaline which is a blue-green. We like our color choices! MSI's website has an example of that countertop with a navy island and I think it looks great.

No matter how effective the vent hood is, shelving beside the hood will be a dust and grease magnet. Builders are not kitchen designers.

Special designs behind the cooktop are a dated look. Search the web. You’ll rarely see that done anymore. Besides, your vent hood will be the focal point in the room.

Best to wait until all elements are installed in the kitchen, before choosing backsplash tile.

What will the countertop material be? Fake marble quartz…or something more original? Does your backsplash choice mesh with it?

Agree with darbuka that a cooktop accent tile is dated-reminiscent of those faux Tuscan kitchens. Choose one backsplash tile for the whole space-you've already got two cabinet finishes (plus glass in some doors) and an ornate hood.

You do not have a Tuscan kitchen so no accent tile behind the range , never open shelves anyhwere near a range unless you just love cleaning them pretty much every time you clean the range.. I do agree backsplash and wall color are the last choices you make until all the other elemnts are in place .BTW that accent tile does not work at all with the other choices

blue and green work well often times...many situations. HOWEVER the tile is almost olive green.......not quite right. heres what I would do...take the pattern tile up to the bottom of the hood or a few inches up where that hood trim is. Find the correct hue in paint which corresponds to the bit of green in the tile.....it would be closer to a minty or think jewel tone green....in a pretty sheen........this will work with island and I think it would be nice if you want the blue/green palette...... and its a small gesture ....... get that paint shade right and paint above the pattern tile on the wall all the way over around pantry door. I think if the island will have seated people the pattern tile is much nicer than solid because I dont find appliances and pantry doors interesting...you want alternate focus . Make sure you have island pendants or maybe wall sconces left and right of hood........again....avoid the appliance heavy visuals by inserting these things in this line of sight where you will be seated.......the pattern tile is nice..use it. On the right wall it would work for a splash too....

your pattern tile isnt nearly this bold so i think the way they used this can be your option too. Very nice w the blue cabinetry to anchor the look.

"I don’t think the tile choices relate to the blue island."

That was my very first thought when I looked at the pics.

You have a blue island. Find ONE TILE for your backsplash. Nothing different over the stove area. If you want a pattern, do it on the entire wall.

    What about a blue tile?

Your pattern tile choice won’t work in this kitchen.
