A few miscellaneous questions related to new place

last modified: 2 years ago

#1 I've finally figured out how to navigate FB marketplace. Worked well for the bedroom furniture. However I've seen a few other things and contacted the sellers right away with simple questions. I never hear back. Is that common?

#2 Do you have any open upper shelves in your laundry room? I have one set of upper cabinets where one of the doors is falling off - hinge screws have torn out of the frame. So I took both doors off until I can get the one door fixed. Now I kind of like it open. It's neat and tidy and easy access to things I use frequently. And it's not like my laundry room is a showplace with two cat litter boxes in it. I also have two cabinets over the washer/dryer that have functional doors and don't plan to changes those. Just curious if anyone had open shelves vs. upper cabinet doors.

#3 Have you ever heard of Thuma beds? I kind of like this one though I'm not sure I'd spend that much plus the mattress.

Yes. It usually means they sold it and are not motivated to answer. I tend to look at new listings for that reason.

    No but Im not opposed.

Some laundry rooms are also de facto hallways. If it is not, I don't see any need to have doors.

No. I would not buy a fabric headboard unless it was valuable enough to merit paying for reupholstering every few years or unless it could accommodate a slipcover.

I've seen ads for that bed, and while I like the look, all I can think of is how often I'd probably bang my shins on it.

We have a Thuma bed in our big downstairs bedroom for DD and SIL. I bought it about a year and a half ago and by all accounts it is very comfortable to sleep on. The design is simple and modern and the frame itself is beautifully crafted. No one has run into the legs as far as I know. It was ideal for their room as it is low enough for their kids to climb on it and safe if they fell off.

The “pillowboard” headboard comes in a choice of a few sturdy fabrics and they have several slipcovers available. I liked two of the colors (burnt orange and sage green) and ordered both with the bed in case the colors were discontinued. It actually took a year to receive the green one as it was very popular and on backorder.

The headboard is a great design, a wedge that easily and comfortably allows sitting up.

Overall the quality was excellent for the modest price. It’s clean and contemporary looking and was a good choice for a guest bedroom that gets a lot of wear and tear. I had a custom upholstered bed made for another bedroom on that level that has not worn as well, mostly because of the fabric I selected.

Great to hear KSWL - thank you. It did seem like it was nicely designed and constructed. I didn’t notice slip covers - have to go back and check that out. The thought of hacking shins into those corners crossed my mind but my guess is after doing that a couple times you’d probably learn to allow for adequate clearance get around it.

#1 While it is true that you may not be getting responses because the item sold, it also may be because you are in the south now and people don’t move as quickly as you may be accustomed to. They may not have gotten around to checking their FBMP or Messenger yet.

Several houses ago, DH and I had a neighbor who was from Ohio. Due to some health issues, he retired from his job and decided to do handy-man work. For the items that he could not do because of his health, he subbed them out. It would drive him nuts that the tradesman would say he would be at my house at X time and then not show up until 2 or 3 hours later (pre-cell phones being ubiquitous). DH and I were not surprised

DIL thoroughly researches every purchase she makes and are very happy with their Thuma bed. As mentioned, it is well constructed and beautifully finished. Assembly was easy. IIRC, they use their Sleep Number mattress with it. No issues with the headboard.

DD also has the Thuma bed. It was her first major purchase after graduating from college. I was very impressed with the quality when I saw it. She loves it, and was especially proud of putting it together herself!

That is a pretty bed! I have a bed with the headboard upholstered in light blue velvet. I was a little concerned about it getting worn or whatever from heads or body parts touching it, lol. (I like to sleep with my head right at the top of the bed-it is like a subconscious security thing, I guess.) Anyway, I just keep two king sized pillows as a buffer between the mattress and headboard. The velvet is pristine. 😊

Great recommendations on the bed - maybe I will splurge. As far as the FBM listings, I contacted the people very shortly after the listing went up - heard nothing. Followed up several times over a couple days - nothing. Still appears to be for sale. Completely different from the people selling the bedroom furniture but they are professional estate-salers/resellers.

I sold some things for DH when he relocated his company. I did find the number of initial inquiries overwhelming and hard to keep up with. Maybe the same is true for furniture.

I think I'm going to get the Thuma bed subject to DH approval. I'll get a mattress locally. And lo and behold one of the FBM people finally got back to me. Now if I can get her to reply again so I can go look at the stuff - a couple upholstered chairs that look like they'd work with the wicker furniture. I can bring cushions to see if the colors work together. Also an interesting console table for DH's TV in the upstairs bonus room that he has claimed as his room.

I was going to go to Palmetto Furniture tomorrow but now I want to see these FBM items first. If they work out and I get the Thuma bed I can wait to go there until I'm ready to do something about living room furniture which won't be until fall.

Marketplace has that initial phrase already there, ”is this still available”. It is annoying and most sellers ignore it. I do. It will be marked sold or removed if it is not available. Just touch and write a real question. Most of the time, my question is about measurements. I wish people would list the size of things.

@Sherry8aNorthAL - I wrote real questions that were easy to answer. The person finally responded after three days. Hoping it doesn’t now take her that long to let me know when I can look at the items.

I have found FBMP to be frustrating too, but the fact is so are actual companies, and FBMP sellers don't have staff, LOL. Also, I think some people don't put measurements because they are not sure about fractions, I kid you not.

I agree with above, but the word “approximately” should be used and would be acceptable on FBM. Also acceptable would be to post it with a tape measure showing the measurements, but that would be asking for a miracle to happen on FBM

3katz, you did well then. When I posted something I got all the scammers wanting my phone number ao they could send me a code. That is a acam. They use your number to get a google phone in your name, so they can scam someone else.

Then there are the ones that hit that stupid phrase and do not really want the item.

Then there are all the company ads. Real and fake.

Just ordered my Thuma bed and one extra cover for the PillowBoard. Yippee!!

And just to clarify--my recent grad DD did not pay retail for her bed (just looked at the price). She found it through her University social media group. A business graduate student had several that he was selling for way under retail. Can't remember but I think she paid around $500 which was a big investment for her. In retrospect, I'm wondering how that grad student got the beds????
