Seeking advise for kitchen updates

last year

Hello,

Recently you were all so gracious and kind to me and offered lots of advise given the restrictions that I gave you. Well....I'm back and I still haven't made any changes (oh, I did add some glass panels), but I do now have more freedom with what I can do. So...if this were your kitchen, and you can change anything to update/improve it, what would you do? Only things that will not change are 1) floor - porcelain tile with browns/muted grays, no pink cast and 2) cabinets will not be replaced with new, they can be altered/painted/etc, but not replaced.

With regards to things that must go: black paint on island, black backsplash, pendant lights. curtains

Thank you all in advance for your time and suggestions.

Elaine

    I’d paint the walls.

    New, white countertops and backsplash.

    New hardware.

Get new stools. it doesnt seem so much in need of things . the glass doors are nice. the black things along w the green and wood tone is kinda nice and different enough from run of the mill kitchens. just get some different stools.

these stools would add a lot to your situation

    Hello!

Just you so much!!! No votes for painting the cabs or the island? I'm all for painting the walls, currently the walls are SW Bamboo Shoot, the adjoining space is SW White Raisin. I don't have a single white wall in my home, so what color would you suggest? I do have BM Wythe Blue in my basement, and I love it, I was considering it. ?

I'm all for new stools! So ..thanks for that suggestion.

I love the modified pic above, we have been thinking about getting a white tile and replacing the current backsplash, also planning on taking the tile to the ceiling at the fan and over the sink. Also considering replacing both counters for something to coordinate in white/ish.

I am also considering removing the cabinet to the right of the sink, what is the vote on that?

Any suggestions on suggested hardware update? wall color? and island light pendants?

Oh...and if we were determined to paint the island, what color?

    Thank you so much!!!

You have a lot of good stuff going on, and with some tweaks this can be an A+ kitchen.

    - I wouldn't do a thing to the cabinets. I'm even iffy on painting the black island ... you'd never match the cabinets, and I can't imagine a color that'd spiff it up better than it is. Push-come-to-shove, maybe a dark hunter green? But I'm not sure it'd be an improvement.

    - I wish the cabinets went to the ceiling, but I don't think it'd be worth the effort /cost of adding anything above (and doing it well). And, if you did add something up top, it'd be kinda squatty. No, don't touch the cabinet tops.

    - I like the granite on the island. Is is possible to match it for the cabinets? I dislike this mis-matchy trend, and you already have a mismatched island ... I would rather see the countertops match throughout /would make it look intentional.

    - The island hardware is also mismatched? Again, looks accidental.

    - The worst thing in this room is the backsplash. Too dark, too clutter-y, eye-catching in a bad way. I think ripping this out will make a monumental difference. I'd start with the backsplash, as it's borderline offensive to the eye.

    - I hate the clear stools. They scream "college apartment" and cheapen the space. I don't love the kitchen chairs either. Again, they seem to lack substance and don't mesh well with the rest of the traditional kitchen.

    - I like the color on the walls, but painting it in a lighter tone would make the space feel larger. If you like the sage green, I'd keep it. You mentioned blue ... yes to a blue in a similar tone.

    - I also like the curtain over the window, as it provides color /texture while allowing in the natural light. I'd leave it alone until everything else is done, then decide whether the colors still work. If you go for new colors, I'd like to see another curtain of a similar size /shape.

    - I like the clock above the sink, as it ties into the stainless appliances. It's functional and size-appropriate.

    - I usually like slate in a kitchen, as HerbFlavor has suggested, but slate really only looks great with mission cabinets like that inspiration picture. It would not 'specially be friends with your cathedral cabinets.

    - I like the stools HU-something has suggested.

    - But I wouldn't go with the utiquitous white-with-veining countertop. Seems too light for your space. I much prefer the granite you have on your island now ... seems to vibe well with what you already have.

    - I would not remove the cabinet to the right of the sink. Solid no. Empty, the space would look odd. You could add open shelving, but that wouldn't mesh well with what you have ... would feel too farmhouse. If you were to expand the window, it wouldn't particularly play well with the door (door?) by the table. No, I wouldn't remove that cabinet.

    - The island pendants are okay, and you seem to have good lighting throughout the rest of the kitchen.

    Hello,

We also like the granite on the island. The island was a replacement from the original, why I chose black is beyond me at this moment!! hee hee!!! Yes, the hardware is different, but it is a satin nickel and our cab hardware is a simple round satin nickel knob.

We also thought about and later decided against moving cabs to the ceiling, I have a 9 foot ceiling and can't reach the top shelves in my current cabs!

" traditional kitchen. " - herein lies the issue..yes I have a traditional kitchen, but my style is not traditional, so I'm trying to make my kitchen fit "me" and it's a fight!

See attached pic of my bedroom, same green paint as in the kitchen, but the style is competely different, I love my bedroom. I'd love to love my kitchen.

What about creamy white uppers as in pic attached? I could have the island and the uppers painted and leave the rest of the wood. Comments on this suggestion?

White counters and white backsplash are in line with we were thinking.
