The alphabet is done for the year so it is time for you to show us your daylily seedlings worthy of being registered. I am betting all of us can’t wait to see what you have created! There will be two more seedling posts, one for seedlings with promise and one for new seedlings. Let’s see what you have!

Sherry - That photo of your garden is so pretty! I love all the colors. I just lost a really long post. so I'm going to try again after lunch. Then, I'm only going to post a few pictures at a time.

I'll start with our three seedlings that have been registered for this year.

Professor Ninglecut is a tet with some purple and yellow teeth. Some teeth have both colors, but there can also be just purple teeth. The name comes from a play two of our kids wrote when they were little. Our son Eric took the role of Professor Ninglecut and our daughter Michelle was Madame Cheeseball. The scape is about 37 inches tall with 3 branches and 15 buds. The bloom is about 6 inches across and it's a mid-late dormant.

The funny thing about Madame Cheeseball is our daughter likes flowers, but yellow ones are her least favorite. She was ok with Madame Cheeseball being yellow with orange shadings. The scape is about40 inches tall with 3 branches and 15 buds. The flower is about 7 inches across. It is a midseason, dormant tetraploid.

The last one is our first dip introduction. Peter Pan's Kiss was hybridized way back in 2009, but we quick working with dips at that time. We decided it was cute and deserved a name. It is a 2.25 inch rather trumpet (or thimble) shaped flower. It has a 30 inch scape with 4 branches and about 20 buds. It is midseason and semi-evergreen. It grows like a weed.

    That's all for me.

I have several in the pipeline for registration. But just when they will registered is a question mark because of the possible move. A move would set back the line-out process. These two are the first that will be registered.

Inimitable X Moonlit Caress - Vigorous and floriferous, this one has been a favorite of mine since the very first bloom. It's an ivory near-white that shows a pink blush when the temperatures shift, It has a 7-inch bloom on 27-inch scapes with 3 to 4 way branching and a range of 12-21 buds. The foliage always looks green and lush even when others around it have streaks or browning. A midseason bloomer, it multiplies quickly and is fertile both ways. It's semi-evergreen with lots of dormancy. I'm looking for someone in the north and someone in the south to trial it.

Last season it showed the pink blush for many days since it was cooler than usual. This is how it might look most of the time grown in the North.

In my usual temps in the 90s, it looks more near white.

Here's a single bloom from when the temps were in the mid 90s.

((Palace Garden Beauty X Karelia) X This Longing #1) - This is one that Kate has always liked, It had been a slow multiplier until now, when it more than doubled from 9 to 20 fans. I don't know if the terrific multiplying is the result of killing grubs in the area, or moving out seedlings on either side of it., or both. It's an evergreen that blooms midseason and usually reblooms. Height has ranged from 24-28 inches. Bud count has ranged from 12-18, and it usually has at least three branches. Fertile both ways. Kate, if you want to trial this one, give me a shout. I need someone in the north to grow it and see if it will survive in the lower zones.

Early on, when temps are cooler, the eye has more blue tones.

    More to come later ...

Nancy - I love that you named two of your daylilies after characters in your childrens' play! And the names are whimsical and fun! Professor Ninglecut has a very unique look among toothy daylillies. How neat that it sometimes has purple teeth. I'm not a big orange fan, but I Madame Cheeseball really appeals to me. I love the glowing color, the shape, and of course, the name. Can you tell us its parentage?

Brad - Are those registered daylilies or your seedlings?

Debra, your seedlings are wonderful. The white one is lovely. The edge on the Palace Garden Beauty seedling is insane--so wide.

These next ones have one or two shy of the 16 fans I require to register a daylily.

Razor Sharp X Spacecoast Night Vision - This one has had different looks in different seasons and different temperatures. It has consistently been a semi-evergreen EM bloom and rebloom with 28-inch scapes and a 5.75-inch bloom. Bud counts range from 12-23, It's a good multiplier and fertile both ways. The flowers are dark purple with a lavender purple watermark and white and cream white teeth.

Last season it looked like this at the end of June (shade):

On those rare occasions when temps go from cool to hot, it can have this grayed purple look common of Trahlyta and Jerry Hyatt.

This is the darkest it's ever been in the very rainy 2021 season.

Sun shot from last year. This photo puts more red tones in it than it has in reality.

((Palace Garden Beauty X Karelia) x Unknown (most likely Magnificent Rainbow) - This is one of my weather warrior seedlings. When most everything had short scapes and few buds, this one managed to garner 14-19 buds on 30-inch scapes. It normally has 20-27 buds on 32-inch scapes. A dormant, it's an ML bloomer with at least three-way branching. So far it has never rebloomed, but it does bloom for a long time late into the season. Pale yellow cream petals with lavender patterned eye and darker lavender purple outline and picotee edge.

End of its bloom last year.

    More to come!

Nancy, I really like Madame Cheeseball……love that edge and the shape of the bloom. ’m still not a tooth fan but Professor is quite the toothy boy……such a nice accomplishment in that category.

Debra, as usual I love your creations! I do like the two daylilies in the first post best. I would love to trial whatever you wish, even if I have to move something out. Right now my account wont allow any emails, I have to call Houzz after these post are done and have them fix it.

Nancy, I love Madame Cheeseball!! Love the story about it, love the name, love the flower!!!

Debra, here is your shout out to trial that favorite of mine!!! I am so glad your are going to register it-it is still gorgeous! And the first one, the Inimitable cross is also a winner.

You got a quite tall scape on Ninglecut with shorter parents. Madame Cheeseball has a form with flair. The Palace Garden seedling is distinctive with its wide edge and flaring sepals.

I can see where all these might be on your radar to register. Perseus‘ Sandals seedling is impressive in the clump. The SC Francis Busby seedling has rich color and ruffling-what’s not to like! Leonard has performed well for you. Love the edge on The Ultimate Sacrifice seedling.

What a great photo of SC Francis Busby seedling….love the edge and ruffled appearance. Leonard is a favorite of mine……with a bud vount like you have gotten the size of the bloom is secondary.

Sherry and Kate - You can trial both of those first ones if you'd like.

Sherry - I was supposed to send you "Leonard" in the fall, but with my husband's hospitalization and both of us getting Covid, I didn't. I can send you a piece of it also this Spring, if you still want it. I think I still have your email address somewhere. Kay is trialing it in the South. Thanks for the nice comment about the SC Francis seedling! That one is really something in a clump. I need it multiply some more to introduce it.

Brad and Nan - I appreciate your feedback on the seedlings!

Kate - I go back and forth about "Leonard." I personally don't like a flower that small on scapes that tall, but many people don't mind that. I have several kids from Leonard, but none of them showed great plant habit in their first year to bloom. Of course it was a dud year. Thanks for all your comments!

Here's another look at the Perseus' Sandals kid from an earlier season:

Here are a few more than did fantastic in 2021 but have languished in the two drought years:

(Natalie Antoinette X Symphony of Praise) X Pink Aloha -This one had bud counts in the mid- and high-20s with rebloom on every scape three years ago. The past two years, it's only gotten 10-14 buds per scape. A dormant, it multiplies well. I think it has a 6-inch bloom on 25-inch scapes. This is one Maryl always likes, but it does fade a lot when temps are in the high 90s.

    At clump strength

Scarlet Angel X Barbara Mandrell - Evergreen with 6-inch blooms on 26-inch scapes. Three years ago it had scapes with 16-18 buds and rebloomed. It's very fertiile both ways and a fast multiplier. The reason I hesistate on registering it is that, like its mother, the blooms don't look good nights are cool (unpleasant color and slow opening). Once nights warm up to the 70s, it looks great - so more of a southern plant than a northern.

Innocent Discovery X Dearest Valentine - 6 inch blooms on 26-inch scapes. An evergreen midseason bloomer, this one has rebloomed every year and multiplies well. Three years ago, it had most scapes with 16 buds. In the past two years bud counts have been 10-12. Fertile both ways.

Amethyst Prism X Blazing Saddles - 8 inch bloom on 32-inch scapes. Three years ago this one had several scapes with bud counts in the 20s and one scape with 34 buds. Multiplies insanely fast. It has NOT been fertile either way. Semi-evergreen approaching evergreen status. It did not bloom last year.

I hope to see the Amethyst X Blazing seedling next season, it is my favorite of this group. I like the Natalie X Symphony seedling too.

I sure hope we all have a better blooming season to come. Its been so warm that I’m a bit concerned again.

Sherry - Amethyst Prism X Blazing Saddles sometimes looks more like a UF. When it first blooms and it's cool, the colors are gorgeous. As we get up into the mid 90s, the color takes a hit and shows some underlying tan colors. This photo shows it in early June when temps are still only 89 or 90 in the day and 60s at night.

sherrygirl zone5 N il thanked shive
  • last year

I can certainly see the colors of Amethyst Prism in that seedling but much better. I like that bright green throat. I like the color on the Dearest Valentine seedling. It looks darker than DV-do you see it like that? The Scarlet Edge seedling really shows that edge well with that red color.

  • last year
    last modified: last year

Kate - The Dearest Valentine seedling is always a rosy red, while DV is usually more of a pink here, looking red only when temps are very low. The Scarlet Angel seedling does have a nice edge. In reality the edge is not as white as it looks in that photo. It's a combo of off white and gold. Here's another picture of it that better depicts the colors in the edge.

Here's another look at the Dearest Valentine seedling when temps were 95:

Debra: I'm late to the game but I'm battling an attack of Shingles and won't be on much. I do hope you remember that pink aloha seedling as the one I like, cuz I'm not good at remembering all those long names. All your others are beautiful, but the form (along with pink) of this and the edge is just about perfect in my eyes.............Maryl

sherrygirl zone5 N il thanked Maryl (Okla. Zone 7a)

Maryl - Oh no, I understand Shingles is just awful. How are you feeling? If you want to trial the pink for me in your climate, I can send you a couple fans this Spring. It's a dormant. Also, if you'd like, I could send you the one I call "Nadine." I know that was your mother's name. It's a semi-evergreen here and usually gets 12 buds per scape.

    "Nadine"

Debra: You heard right about Shingles......Just awful. I got the first Shingles vaccine when it came out years ago, but I understand there is a new 2-part one out now that's a lot better. If you haven't had one I really suggest you check it out with your doctor. The nerve damage can last years past the initial Shingles infection. It's in my back now.......Geeze, I'd love to try out the pink alhoa seedling and you couldn't be kinder then to remember my mother. I ordered about 3 times more daylilies then what I should have before this attack, and I don't know how I am going to be able to do them now. Let me see how this goes before taking on anything else. I want to be able to coddle your daylilies, and right now I can't see past the next pain pill............Maryl

Spacecoast Francis Busby x Blazing Cannons is always a real show stopper...Love it and hope it eventually makes registration. Debra.

I am so sorry to hear about your shiingles, Maryl! Everyone I know who has had it suffered terribly from it for months. My uncle had it had developed neuropathy in his feet. Eventually had to have surgery on his feet to kill the pain. He was in his mid 80s at they time, so may have been other factors too. I got shingles vaccine after all his problems, the double dose had just come out. Hope yours is not quite as bad since you have had the vaccine?

I have been admiring everyone's beautiful seedlings!

  • last year

Maryl - How long does Shingles usually last? I didn't realize there was nerve damage involved. Hope you feel better soon. You can let me know later in the year about those seedlings.

Kay - Thanks for the comment on the SC Francis Busby seedling. I'm just waiting for it to multiply enough to register. It has 10 fans now, and should be quite a show stopper in a clump this year.

    Debra

Oh Maryl, I am so sorry youhave Shingles. You do have meds for them, don't you? They help shorten the length and the pain for you. I have had the stinkers twice and I do feel for you.'

Kay: You poor thing having shingles twice. When I recover I will be seeing about getting the newer 2 dose Shingles vaccine that's for sure.......Debra: Everyone's recovery time is different. 2-5 weeks is the rule. I'm a little past a week. .........Maybe next year on the daylilies. I really appreciate your offer. I've had to cancel some other garden plants on order because I just think this is not the year to press my body with additional stress. I thought I was more of a "hoss" then I really am.........Maryl
