Has anyone painted a light fixture?

last year
last modified: last year

So, I procrastinated and the light I picked out for my foyer like 8 months ago is now sold out.

Here it was.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1483962190/scalloped-lantern-chandelier-tole-pagoda

I already contacted the seller and it isn't coming back. Nothing similar seems to exist, except for a $4,000 option I don't like as much and I am unwilling to spend $4,000 for one light fixture in a vacation home.

I REALLY want a light blue light. My foyer is white with a light blue door and light blue rooms surrounding it. I am thinking of buying this one:

And painting it.

Can I do that?

If you have done it, what should I know about the process?

Alternatively, anyone know of any light blue light fixtures out there?

I bet you could totally do it. I haven’t, but I would!

I used spray chalk paint on some cabinets at our beach house last year and it was very easy paint to use. Not drippy or anything.

    This is what I used.

I'm not super crafty but that light is cheap enough I would be willing to try. I did not know they made spray chalk paint but now I am very curious about whether that might be the perfect thing! Thanks for bringing that to my attention Sueb

I have spray painted ceiling light fixtures, lamps, and metal headboard, and assorted knick- knacks. Securely tape off anything you don't want to get paint on, use very quick passes, let it dry between coats. Don't try to get too much coverage in one coat, that will result in drips.

It isn't hard but you may want to practice a bit first.

I’ve painted lamps. Remove everything that is removable that you don’t want to paint. Stuff the socket with something and then tape it off. If you are using spray paint, get a trigger gizmo such as this. Your index finger will thank you.

Yes, I have painted a chandelier. I also used a glue gun to attach dowels and styrofoam balls. I painted and transformed it while it was hanging.

I used blue Behr wall paint and then coated it with Pearl Ex for a shimmery look. You can't really see the shimmer in the photo. There was nothing special about the process.

Here is my before and after.

I removed the shade and am saving it for a different project.

To get a look similar to the Etsy chandelier you posted I would paint it blue and then rub a little gold RubNBuff along the edges.

1st is blue with gold edge, and 2nd is white with scuffed edge. Assuming you want 2nd in blue with scuffed edge, I would not use spray paint — I’d use acrylic craft paint and a dry brush.

@beaglesdoitbetter I just noticed the listing says it is a handmade item and the description says it is ”hand painted.” Have you convo’d with the store owner and asked if he could paint it a custom color for you? I’ve had relatively good luck with having Etsy shop owners customize things for me.

If he will do it, I’d be prepared to tell him that I want it painted Benjamin Moore XYZ123. I wouldn’t just say ”light blue.”

Will this shade of blue work for you or is it too strong?

Back to the one you want:

Is there someone in you area who does powder coating? If so, you could buy the white one, have it powder coated and do the little gold trim yourself (a pot of Rub and Buff and your finger would get it done). I had my metal outdoor furniture powder coated. IIRC, it was a motorcycle shop that did it.

I saw rhis stuff in a big antique/’junk’ store recently. They had several pieces of furnitire, mirrors, and other items painted to show examples. I looked into it and they say you can use it on just about anything and no wax is needed after painting.

Oh my gosh @bbstx I love you. You are my new best friend.

I have ordered that one that bbstx has so amazingly and kindly found for me, so I no longer have to attempt painting but I still greatly appreciate the other advice here. Perhaps I will try to paint another fixture for another room as I need 22 fixtures for the new house!

I did actually contact the Etsy seller of the other one I like and ask them if they would hand paint me one, but had not heard back.

    Amazing sleuthing bbstx!

It really is amazing. I looked and looked for like 6 hours to try to find the light somewhere else and I failed utterly. I'll have to look into the google lens thing in the future :)

Beagles, is this it ?? Lantern

  • last year

Yes, that's the one bbstx found up thread and I ordered. Thank you so much Arapaho-Rd

I wonder if Enchanted Home just listed that or if I'm just really bad at googling since you guys seem to be discovering it and I failed...

I've ordered it immediately to be sure it doesn't sell out from under me again!

Glad you got it, Beagles and way to go, bbstx! Forgive me for not reading thru all the posts. Just so glad it's a happy ending!

Glad you got it. I have painted fixtures and agree with Ally De. It isn't hard, but it can be tedious because of the taping and you have to be patient to apply very light coats. But not having to paint is even better. I was confused though -- the Etsy listing says 4 available? Again -- even better to not have to worry about it.

The white is available still on Etsy but not the blue.

I painted 2 large fixtures in a previous house. Used the Rust-oleum spray. I did remove the fixtures and hung them on a hook in the garage for the best spraying/painting results, which isn't a problem if you are getting a new fixture that will need to be hung anyway.

Very bad news. Enchanted Home just called and said there was a glitch, the light is sold out and they won't be getting any more :(

  • last year

Sorry the one you ordered is out of stock.

A quick Google lens search found a few that are close. Like these, showing the price differences. I have not tried the Amazon photo search.

Thanks. Those are all white so I will be back to painting them I guess. I just really wanted the blue with those gold accents :(

Does this one look blue? Maybe more silvery?

So the Etsy seller I had liked the original one from introduced a new one that I like slightly less but is still good enough so I bought it!Hopefully this saga is now over!

Thank you anyway barncatz! Some of those are beautiful but wrong colors...
