High Country Roses greenhouse pictures

last modified: 2 years ago

I went to High Country Roses to research some possible purchases and took some pictures of the plants. I know alot of people order from them and would be interested to see them.

Pearlie Mae, a Buck rose, are the big flowers in the foreground.

There are 3 big green houses like this and then a 4th building with a similar number of roses to these along with the packing area. People were working there so I didn't take pictures. There is another building which probably contains the mature plants for cuttings and I didn't go into that one.

Had a great time and saw some great roses. Matt came out to go over my list with me and give his personal insights. Then he let me wander on my own to check out all the roses. Fantastic place to visit if you come to Denver.
Some lucky warm zone people are getting their shipments since I saw 3 people busy packing roses for shipment.

Yea! I got Victorian Memory the trellis I wanted. It was $42.98 at Lowes, but by the time I decided I wanted it, the Denver metro area was out of stock. Today more showed up so we went and bought one at our local Lowes.

Hope springs eternal with this giant trellis for little Victorian Memory. We put it about 1.5 ft back in order to get it into solid earth and not part of the prep hole. Hope the canes are flexible.

The smaller one that was there got moved to Sally Holmes.

Sally Holmes is really just a bush for us but we will try and clip some canes up anyways. Most of them are too stiff to manipulate.

Maybe we should try caging it like we do Fred Loads. It is a fast grower (dies to the ground every year) and will top the trellis by the time it blooms.

In spider mite news we are still working to get Smoothie cleared.

My husband has sprayed it with a Hershey PA garden home made recommended for their kids garden spray, blasted it with the hose on the underside and been picking off the damaged leaves. Every day there is more damage to remove though so not sure we are winning the war.

My 30 yr old The Fairy had alot of spider webs on her but no visible leaf damage so also got blasted with the hose. It is the closest rose to Smoothie.

I wish I'd know about the spider mites when I picked the new ones up. Would have been alot easier to put them underwater in a soapy bucket and clean them off before planting.

Here, mmmm, Guirlande has this shape. The VM trellis looks perfect.

Thanks Sheila! How tall would you say Guirlande is? High Country Roses says 8-10 ft and that is what I would like there but not seeing many pictures like that from forum members, only on helpmefind.

Love your cute photo bombing dog in the first picture. :-)

I am in love with the trellis. It reminds me of both a Japanese Torii gate and a modern trellis. I was bummed when it showed out of stock and decided to wait to see if it came back next year. Was glad it got restocked so I could get one.

We considered getting more because they don't always have the same design year to year but haven't had any rose grow big enough to fill it yet so didn't want to presume success.

Am a bit concerned we put it to far back and should try to move it closer. My other trellises are all 1 ft off the plant center and it isn't always easy to get the canes trained toward them.

Maybe 3-4 ft tall on Guirlande, mmmm. She is relatively new. Maybe she will get to 8-10 feet in time, but she is wider than tall for sure. My George Oliva is getting taller this year like Matt said it would. My Tiger is a teapot chihuahua mix size of Ben's Elon so she makes roses look larger.

I might move that support closer.

    Sheila,

George Oliva is another one I was considering but for out front. Helpmefind doesn't have any pictures of larger plants. If you have one of yours I would love to see it. Thanks!

Thanks for the height info on Guirlande.

My Guirland goes up to around 5' so far because it's basically tied itself to the support behind it.

Vaporvac, looking forward to your picture also of a mature bush.

We had some deer problems earlier and lost quite a lot of rose blooms😭

Ebb Tide first bloom from HCR that has made it

Pop Art has new buds now after deers ate the first round. I put a cage around and hope to see the bloom soon

    forever_a_newbie,

Sorry to hear about the deer and the blooms. It is hard to not see them after eagerly anticipating them.

All our baby roses are caged so the rabbits don't take down the new canes. For the mature roses it doesn't matter much if a cane is taken from critters or wind. We only occasionally get a deer and they usually just pass through so don't have to guard against them.

Ebb Tide is such a pretty color!

    Victorian Memory is blooming!

I love the orchid pink color. There is also a slightly yellow center which is pretty. I'm interested to see them mature into the ones I see on helpmefind. Both blooms are on new growth since I purchased the plant but in my experience first blooms aren't always the same as what you see on more mature plants.

  • last year

That does not look like my VM, mmmm, but of course you are right about immature blooms.

mmmm12COzone5 thanked Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR

Doesn't look like mine either, but mainly because it has leaves! LOL! This grows super tall here Near thornless. Always has a bloom though.

Do either of you have pics of a young bloom?

This is a straight on shot. I chose this plant because it had multiple canes. The one they had put aside for me had a single very long cane. So there is a chance that this is something else.

  • last year

It's hard to say. Let me look through my pics I only got some very late in the game as this was covered in weeds. I also didn't realize it had grown

Let me explain these pictures as I cannot write from my phone since it erases what I write. But all of my pictures are on my phone. Anyway,1st picture Is GDADA Coma GDA In the year 2022. I think it had been planted 1 year? 2 at the moment. Bought as own route from high country routes. Roses.

Second picture is Victorian memory Leafless. This was before it was pruned and wrapped around and weeded So maybe it will improve but you can see how tall it is those posts are 8' tall.

The rest of the pictures are GDA From 20. Again this is before I have tied them up. I should take more pictures now but the bloom is finished essentially. Then you can see how tall it can grow if you like. It will grow beautifully horizontally however How you wish it grow. This rose is completely clean hardy here Even with -20 winds. Even Peggy martin had died back with 2 back to back winters like that. The temperature temperatures were -7. Peggy died back to about 6'But some canes were still very longlong

These last pictures All except the 1st 1 were from 2024.

Thanks Vaporvac! I can see the hanging Victorian Memory bloom! That is what I expected. Mine is not hanging but I will see how it ages. Maybe send a photo to Matt to verify. I looked on High Country Roses web site and didn't see any in the alphabetical order right around it that looked like the rose I have.

  • last year

You can also see the Victorian memory in the very 1st picture to the right of the humongous Peggy martin. It is in bloom in that picture also. The rose in front of Victorian memory is summer romance for comparison.

Thanks Sheila, Vaporvac and Magpie! I'm afraid I do not have Victorian Memory. I'll have to send a photo to Matt and see if he knows what I do have. I'm sure he will make it right and I can get a Victorian Memory.

I am sure he'll figure it out. What did you think of Guirlande d' Amore?

@mmmm12COzone5, l remember you mentioned about PCdM. Mine from Lowes has her virgin bloom. The flower is not perfect bitten by Japanese 🐞。However I have to say she is above my expectation.

And she is Extremely fragrant, very intense and pure citrus fragrance with a hint of old rose sweetness.

Vaporvac, Guirlande d' Amore looks great but is sold out for this year at HCR. I am hoping to get more cane hardy roses and this appears to be one so is high on my list for next year.

Forever_a_newbie, PCdM is really pretty! I love the ruffled blooms. Thanks for posting the pic.

    Victorian Memory 2.0

Matt thinks the other one is Lillian Austin. He has no idea how it could have gotten into the Victorian Memories since it is in the first greenhouse and Victorian Memory is in the last.

It has very few leaves on it because they have a spider mite problem in that green house so pulled the ones with evidence. Even so we put the leaves in a soapy bucket for a whole minute when it came home. My husband also tried to run his fingers over all the back of the leaves. He has been battling the spider mites from the other roses we got a month ago and didn't want to take any chances with this one. Matt says to treat every 5 days for a couple of weeks to disrupt their egg cycle. My husband is going to hose blast them again tomorrow morning since we are still seeing evidence of them and they appear to have gotten to The Fairy rose also.

I'm leaning toward giving Lillian Austin away. She is very pretty but I don't have a place for her without digging out an existing rose. She is the only one that went in the main rose bed and thankfully hasn't shown any evidence of spider mites but one never knows. They are really tiny and hard to see.

    Renny has another flower.

Pop Arts finally blooms after deers ate its first buds

flower is a bit small but still decent. The form is very beautiful

Peach Swirl I bought bare root from Lows this spring. I Iike both.

Peach Swirl is also really pretty.

Victorian Memory is in and being acclimated.

Lilian Austin went off to a new home.

I enjoyed showing my roses to the lady who picked it up. She said Fred Loads was her favorite and took a picture of it.

Then she took some pictures of Sally Holmes, Lady in Red and Livin' Easy to show her mom.

    Sally Holmes.

She also commented that Love Song was really pretty. I was very pleased that she noticed it.

I think we are winning against the spider mites from High Country Roses. Next time I talk to Matt I'm going to suggest that if they have that problem in the future they include a handout with the roses saying how to treat them before planting. We could have easily dunked them all in a bucket of soapy water and held them under a few minutes and then hand scrubbed off the back of all the leaves, thus avoiding the problem. We did that for the replacement Victorian Memory and so far it seems healthy. We also released two containers of Lady Bugs from the hardware store. They are supposed to be predators for the spider mites.

Replacement Victorian Memory. No blooms yet but I'm hopeful that the new growth may bring one.

Belinda's Blush is on her second round of blooms.

One bloom, another bud. She is recovering from the spider mites nicely. So far this is my favorite new addition due to being able to see the light colored blooms easily from the house.

Smoothie always has blooms but they mostly looks a little ragged. She is likely to be a continuous bloomer.

She had the worst spider mites and seems to be recovering also.

Renny also has constantly had blooms. Here she is today with a bud.

Which will look like this when open.

I'm happy with the new additions but battling the spider mites put a bit of a damper on our enjoyment of the new roses. Also since my husband was watering them and our main roses with buckets prior to us turning on the sprinklers we got rust on a bunch of our main bed roses. This was our first experience with a fungal disease and we now understand why people say growing roses is difficult. Because we had more cane hardy roses due to a less severe winter there was more old leaves and such around their bases. We will have to vacuum them out next year with a shop vac if we want to avoid it going forward.

There appeared to be spider mites on Victorian Memory so I sent my husband out to spray them. He grabbed the wrong bottle and used our home made vinegar, salt and soap weed killer (I think). So now she looks like this.

I am for digging her out. Digging out the surrounding soil and throwing it away. Then getting a new one. He is for waiting until next year to see if we can get a plant without spider mites.

In better news, our other three look like this. They seem to be recovering from the spider mites.

  • last year

Thanks Sheila and Magpie. I think we are leaving it, largely because my husband doesn't want to deal with anymore spider mite plants this year. I was worried that the soap, salt and vinegar has contaminated the soil and it wouldn't grow long term. But we can always dig it out and replace when we replace the plant.

Victorian Memory is making a comeback. All her leaves were burnt with home made weed spray which we cleaned off a couple of hours after it was sprayed. They all turned brown anyways and my husband cleaned most of them off.

A great comeback. Mine doesn't seem to be repeating so far but it's still quite young and also it's so HOT outside.

Two that are blooming, Sidonie and Hera's Song (I think). Japanese Beetles are all over Sidonie's bloom the moment one opens, so I've been cutting them all. The beetles completely ignore Hera's Song but it's still too hot to go out and enjoy much. They also leave Guirland d'Amour alone.
The downside of cutting Sidonie is that it's so thorny all the way up to the bloom, making it very stubborn when trying to arrange stems of it.

We are winning the battle on spider mites.

My Aug. 8th report on the roses.

Renny looks like it will be a continuous bloomer. It always seems to have at least one bloom

Smoothie is also looking like a continuous bloomer.

It was hit the hardest with the spider mites but always has blooms anyways.

Belinda's Blush has enchanting blooms when it blooms but it definitely has rest periods.

Victorian memory has no blooms yet but is doing an impressive job recovering from losing all her leaves to home made weed killer.

I have two roses that are laughing at the Japanese Beetles.

Dick Koster has one beetle so lots of nice flowers to show.

Lady in Red has been getting some blooms eaten once the beetles have eaten all the blooms on the other roses. But when the other roses bloom she pushes through some blooms that are not eaten.

  • last year

@mmmm12COzone5, your Dick Koster is super cute and lovely. Lady in Red is the least attractive to JBs in my garden too. The light color roses are more likely to be attacked: Julia Child, Fun in the Sun, Beverly, Pcdm, lady of shallot.

Bad news that my Pop Arts suddenly died (or maybe not). All leaves turned yellow and dropped. I make sure root is not loose so it is not a vole damage. Will keep an eye on it and other roses. It is rather odd

    mmmm12COzone5 thanked forever_a_newbie_VA8
  • last year

Forever_a_newbie, Sorry to hear about Pop Art. At least you didn't spray it with weed killer like we did to our Victorian Memory.

If you had someone working on your yard to spray the lawn or even planting or weeding they may have done something. We had a service planting a bunch of new plants. They had a watering can to water every thing in. Everything they watered turned black and died. I think they reused a can they had previously used plant poison in.

That is basically what my husband probably did to ours. I think he used a spray bottle for the anti-spider mite spray and then reused it for weed killer.

  • last year

@mmmm12COzone5, we never spray any chemicals in our gardens or lawn (if it could be called a lawn. It is all sort of grasses 😼 I can only guess physical damage for such sudden death.

I am happy to hear you won over spider mites. Congratulations. Your roses look great
