MAY FOTESS SWAP: Carousel Month (Horses, Fun and Birthdays)

last modified: 11 months ago

FOTESS swaps are for FOTESS members only. If you might want to join in on future swaps, contact me (Jeanne) to find out about membership. Obviously there is no cost to join the group, but we do ask that you join in on the swaps on a somewhat regular basis. We try to keep the postage costs manageable but we all know how costs are these days. Sometimes it will just be postage for a greeting card or occasionally a bit more. This month is a greeting card that includes a bit of your creativity.

Okay, so are we ready for a month of fun in May?

First, the Kentucky Derby. I hope I have the correct list of horses that are running – sometimes there is a horse scratched. Pick one horse (that has not been selected by someone else) and before Saturday I will randomly assign a second horse to you. If your horse comes in first, you win. However, second and third place (place and show) will also get a small prize. However, one prize per person so if you're horses come in 1st and 2nd only one prize, same for 2nd and 3rd. So however you celebrate: big bonnets or mint juleps, just cheer for your favorites. ALL MEMBERS can select a horse even if you're not swapping this month. To choose your horse, just post the name below. Make sure no one else has already selected that horse.

There will be a carousel game. I love carousels and they do involve horses! Again, any member can play this game in May.

And now for the swap! We used to be much better at recognizing when it was someone's birthday. Yes, I haven't kept up with it like I should. Anyway do you remember Alice in Wonderland and the “Unbirthday”? The swap for May will be to send a Birthday (Unbirthday) card to your swap partner. Please add something small on or inside your card that brings to mind her birthday month. So that could be the birthday flower for that month (seeds or a picture of the flower), something that ties in with a holiday or special day during the month of her birthday, a recipe for a favorite birthday cake or however you want to focus on this Birthday or Unbirthday celebration.

Please sign up by May 9th and when you sign up please include your birthday month. Mail by May 18th. Please post when you send and when you receive and post a picture of what you receive if you're able to do that. I'll list the horses running in the Derby in a second post so this one won't be quite so long.

Margo, that's correct. I always liked riding on carousels but didn't know Charles Lindbergh did!

So far: Annie 3, Ruth 2, Margo 1 for the carousel game.

    Here we go again!

Carousels are an important part of American history and because of that the U.S.

    (Part A --- 2 words: First = 6 letters, Second = 7 letters)

    ___/___/___/___/___/___/ **** ___/___/___/ ___/___/___/___/

    has issued

    (Part B --- First = 1 letters, Second = 6 letters)

    ___/___/___/___/___/___/___/___/___/___/___/___/___/ **** ___/___/___/___/___/___/

    honoring the carousel – twice.

    Jeanne ~ can I get an E

    GOT it...I think!

POSTAL SERVICE has issued COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS honoring the carousel twice.

Jeanne, great trivia about the carousel. I want to get on one right now....I have never seen one that was not beautiful.

All of you are so good about guessing. Yes, Annie, POSTAL SERVICE and COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS are the answers! I remember those stamps!

Annie 4, Ruth 2, Margo 1 for the carousel game.

Will be back to post more tomorrow.

Ruth, Amazon just let me know that your "something" should arrive to you on Tuesday.

    Happy Evening.....

Thanks so much, Amy. My seeds arrived yesterday but they were always in a different place when I typed so now I brought them upstairs with me so i can list them.. Amy sent Yellow Zinnias, Black Eyed Susan Vine and Sunflower Autumn Beauty. I'll be excited to try them. More rain than usual this week so the plants have been enjoying it!

    Your package was mailed today.

Jeanne, Im glad they arrived. I didn’t order a birthday flower because the ones i ordered looked so pretty. I also ordered from the lady on Etsy because her packaging looked cute in the pictures. I hope they grow really good for you! Take care, Amy

On the whole I'm doing much better picking out seeds and plants for this yard. I haven't tried any of the 3 you sent yet, Amy, so another attempt to see how some new types do here. Thanks so much!

We don't have anyone signed up as hostess for June or August. It's fine with me if we skip those months, but if anyone wants to be hostess, let us know.

    Mailing out Margo's card today.

Hope everyone has a fantastic week!

Ruth, your AMAZON pkg arrived at your home one day early.....

Yes it did. Look what a lovely wildflower hand painted wine glass I received today.

Beautiful. I love it. Thank you so much.

Did anyone get to watch the Preakness? I totally lost track of which weekend it would be and felt bad I didn't watch it as it happened but I've watched several of the clips of the races on YouTube after the fact.

I haven't been sleeping well and developed a rash type thing on my back last week so I went to the doctor today. Suspected it might be a tick and I couldn't see a thing based on where it was. They think it's a mild case of shingles and all I can say it's it's definitely painful. I've been vaccinated so hopefully this will be a very mild case. They also gave me a prescription so hopefully that will discourage it from spreading. Always something!

Nice to see "Happy Mail" being sent and received.

Ruth, what a beautiful wone glass.

Jeanne, wow, thought the vaccine would prevent any case of shingles. I am sorry to hear you still got it. I received my vaccine a while ago so hope it works.

Ruth ..LOL...you may not be a wine drinker like me...a-ok. You could put a candle in it or drink OJ!! Or.............................?????Your card to me arrived at my house today. Shall I open it now or wait until the PACKAGE arrives? Your call...............you tell me.

Annie, I do have a glass of wine occasionally.

Open your card now, or whenever you would like.

    Jeanne, Hope you feel better!

Thank you for the pretty Birthday card and fun birthday facts, work scramble and word search. So fun!!! I am learning a lot about my month. Take care, Amy

Glad it got to you okay, Amy. When I thought about January, I thought about snow. Then I realized you may not even associate January with snow. Hope I wasn't too far off with the theme. I also enjoyed reading the information that I sent about the month of January!

Today I received my beautiful unbirthday card from Annie. With Happy Birthday multi colored confetti, of course.

Jeanne, so sorry you aren't feeling well. My in laws and my daughter has had shingles and I know it's very painful.

We've been under a tornado watch most of the day but nothing really bad yet. Hope it stays that way.

Hope you stay safe, Ruth. So many bad storms in so many places. I'll definitely try to post a few more carousel "fill-ins" over the next few days. I didn't plan them ahead of time so I'll browse and find some. Having had 3 of the 4 shingles vaccinations I'm not doing too bad with this but staying in and very tired. I think I have Spring allergies right along with the other.

Amy, just thought I would mention that I included some snowy scene postage stamps in your card. They were on the inside flap of the front of the card. I'm guessing you found them and the balloons. Necessary to celebrate your Un-Birthday!

I am away visiting friends in Ohio and my package arrived yesterday. I had my husband open it and send a picture. Nicole sent a hummingbird feeder related to my birthday in that it is red like my birthstone which is Garnet. Thank you Nicole. My hummers are just beginning to come back and will enjoy the new feeder. I will attemp to attach a picture but Houzz doesn't always cooperate with me.

PS. I special ordered something for Nicole that arrived yesterday. I will package it up and mail it Tuesday.

Ruth, thank you for the lovely birthday card and poppy seeds!!

Thanks for posting what is on its way and received. I'll catch up on the list this weekend.

Here's another carousel questions. Let's see who gets this one.

Carousels and this other attraction are the two oldest amusement rides that we still use

    Two words:

    First = 6 letters, Second = 7 letters)

    ___/___/___/___/___/___/ **** ___/___/___/___/___/___/___/

Hope some have a fun weekend planned. Nothing going on here but it's supposed to be a rainy weekend for us. We'll see.

    How about ROLLER COASTER.....

Jeanne, The stamps will come in handy. Thank you so much! Happy Weekend everyone!

Annie, you've got it! So Annie has 4, Ruth 2, Margo 1 for the carousel game. I thought that one would be guessed right away. I'll start looking for another. Scores move up to: Annie 5, Ruth 2, Margo 1 for the carousel game.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. I'm starting to recover from that shingles issue I had. So thankful I'd had the vaccinations and got medication right away so it would heal more quickly. Hope I don't ever see it again.

I drove over to Lowe's today and got some garden soil and compost. I think I mentioned that I had a garden area put in around my backyard windmill. It will be fairly shaddy there, but I have quite a few plants that do well in shade (they've been potted on my screened porch for ages) so little by little I will get them into the new garden. I think I got close to 20% of it planted today. After so many years in the country my husband and I never felt like we needed a string trimmer, I'am finally on the lookout for one. Probably going with the Ego brand. That's what my lawnmower is and it's terrific.

If you use a string timmer pass along any good features that you really like or problems you could do without?

    Be well Jeanne......

    Happy Weekend!!

Come on Ruth, catch me ...LOL!!!!!! I know you can do it!!

Happy weekend girls....have fun with family and friends...

Rather hot here (guessing low 90s earlier and very sunny) and although I was expecting rain based on prior forecasts I listened to the weather midday and it sounded like there wouldn't be any rain until late tomorrow. So, of course, after I watered both the front and back gardens down came the rain. Oh, well, I guess better too much than too little.

    Here's one more carousel question:

The Americans of 1869 showed their ability to innovate by adapting the recently invented ______ to power a carousel ride.

    Answer: 1 word (7 letters)

    ___/___/___/___/___/___/___/

    Carousel score:

Annie 4, Ruth 2, Margo 1 for the carousel game

    Derby Prizes:

Ruth and Nicole will get prizes for their Derby horses.

I will try to mail the prizes by the end of next week. This bout with Shingles had me out of commission for a lot of the week. Feeling much better now. So glad I had the vaccinations because otherwise I would likely still be absolutely miserable..

And catching up on the sent and received list:

Jeanne and Amy will send to each other - Both received

Nicole and Margo will send to each other - Margo received. Nicole's item had been on order and will be mailed on Tues..

Ruth and Annie will send to each other _ Both received

Jeanne, Annie did receive a card with seeds, but not the item I ordered from Itsy. The tracking # shows the label was created but no updates since May 19. I ordered from Etsy once or twice before with no problems. Hope there isn't an issue this time.

    I will guess vehicle.

Thanks for correcting that about Annie's package, Ruth.

As for your guess, not vehicle but it is a type of vehicle.

I think I know but Ruth you take a stab at it first........

Ill guess bicycle but no one can catch up with Annie.

Nicole, received your card. Thank you for the stickers and seeds. Your card etc will go out tomorrow. I apologize for the delay. Margo

    Yes, Margo, bicycle is correct!

Bicycles were recently invented at that time. I never realized carousels had every been powered that way.

Annie 4, Ruth 2, Margo 2 for the carousel game

I think that wraps up our carousel game with Annie the winner.

I may not post again other than to confirm all the swaps have been received. I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day Weekend.

Now to decide on some little prizes for those who won the games ... I love thinking of what to send and sending them.

As I said, we likely won't have a swap or games in June and August. I'll check to see who signed up to be hostess in July and send a reminder to her. I think during a quieter month I will post something on the Houzz swap boards and see if we can get a few new people to join with us here.

Nicole, your package was mailed today with estimated arrival

of Saturday. Again, I apologize for the delay.

    Happy Tuesday!!

no worries Margo, im not home so its perfect timing to get happy mail this weekend!

Jeanne, thanks for a wonderful "unibirthday" month. I still want to go on a carousel. I am headed to Phili next week for 5 days.....I believe there are 3 or 4 in Philadelphia.....maybe I can hit one of them, if time permits. LOL!!

Ruth, I will post after I receive your surprise something. I am gone here and there in June but I will have someone bringing my mail in. If my ETSY surprise shows up while I am gone, I will post after I return!! Thanks in advance!!

    Happy Wednesdy...Happy June!!

Thank you Jeanne for another fun month!

Have a great Summer everyone! Take care, Amy

If anyone goes someplace with a carousel during the summer, how about share a picture? I will try to drive up to Pullen Park one day to see the carousel there. I'm so behind with everything. Have had multiple health things to deal with this month. Hope June goes better. I did buy a string trimmer today! First time I ever used one. My only experience is using a hedge trimmer and a lawn mower, so it didn't wack out as strongly as I thought it might. I really need to get a better feel for how far the string extends - I already cut down my one marigold and a crocosmia. Also got a bare spot in my lawn from the string hitting it too hard. Thankful it's not requiring any computer software knowledge!

Jeanne, yes thank you for a fun swap month.

Weather wise here has not been a fun month. Hail two or three different nights last week. Storms almost every day. We live on a small hill and still have water standing in the yard. Tornadoes all around us. High winds up to 77 miles an hour. Last night the wind was so bad the electrical wires beside our house and across the street caught fire, broke and looked like fireworks. Our power was off from before 6pm until around 11 today.
Annie, the bees were shining bright in the yard, so I brought them inside. They made enough light in the bathrooms that we could go in without having to use other lights. Pretty cool.
Tracking says your package is out for delivery.
Hope y’all are all having a good month.

    Ruth,

I opened this beautiful package late last night. I could not figure out who it was from. I thought maybe I had a secret admirer...haha!! I pondered this for a while and then thought it might be from Ruth. Confirmation that it was indeed Ruth after just reading her post above.

Well, Ruth this Moonstone Sterling Silver pendant is lovely. I don't have any Moonstone!!

And yes, Moonstone is a gemstone for the month of June which is my birthday month. Ruth well done!!

So glad the bees are shining bright for you, even in the bathrooms....funny!

    Thank you so much Ruth!!

    Hi everyone!

Yesterday received Margo's birthday present to me. I so love to open presents!! Thank you Margo for taking your time to think of what to send me and making it personalize for me/month of December with my name on the charm.

I truly appreciate it!! THANK YOU!!!

Lovely gifts! I thnk the swap is completed now I'll get the prizes mailed out for the game winners in a few days. We just had our garden club picnic and plant exchange today and it went great.. So now I can start catching up on other things. I came home with 6 new plants and 3 are large but all things I wanted. We'll see how much effort it takes to dig adequate holes. No rain here in the past few days and I am waiting for some.

Ruth your weather sounds terrible. I hope it's over with soon.

I will be sending out little prizes for the May games on Monday. I know it's just fun for us to get something other than junk mail, so it's not a big deal for me to send and I apologize for being slow. Either busy, tired, too hot or something all the time these days! I'm sure others can relate.

I had forgotten about the Preakness, but I did remember to watch the Belmont today. It was a surprise to me that the race was in Saratoga. I've never been there, but it looked like a great place.

Jeanne, got my prize today. So cute and thoughtful. Thank you for the gifts and for hosting a fun month.

Glad you received it okay. I had fun with the May activities also.

Jeanne ~ thanks for the prize and the thought you put into the prize, very creative.

    Thank YOU for hosting!!!

Jeanne, just opened my prize. I will have fun using these. You are very clever and creative!!

    Thanks so much!!

Glad all the prizes were received. A pleasure!
