Which of these fragrant shrubs should I get as a replacement?

Hello all,

One of Heirloom roses (Louise Clements) died within one year and I was offered a free replacement. I am looking for a fragrant shrub (maturity size up to 5x5), reblooming, vigorous, and fairly tolerant to blackspots. Many of Heirloom roses are currently out of stock. So I am left out with these options: Robert Clements, Edith's Darling, Stars 'n' Stripes Forever and Earth Angel.

Which one do you recommend?

If you have a recommendation that is not in the list, please speak out.

Earth Angel is a beautiful rose but personally, Im mot a fan of chalis shaped blooms. I love the color of Robert Clemmons. I see that Portlandia is still available and Quietness if you like pink

I can’t speak to the others you listed but I would not be without Earth Angel. I had two at my last garden and have two again in my current garden. They are some of my healthiest roses and while vigorus they are well mannered and easy to keep in bounds if that is required. However, while it is fragrant it doesnt wow me on that front and personally I wouldn't grow it for fragrance alone if that is a priority for you.

How about Memorial Day or Deelish, both are fragrant and resist disease. I’ve seen Edith Darling as the most blackspotted rose in public gardens where blackspot usually is not an issue. Earth Angel is beautiful, fragrant, and resistant, but repeat is very slow.

@Heather RR (PNW 8b) Does Earth Angel bloom in the first 1-2 years?

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) Both Memorial Day or Deelish are HT and Memorial Day doesn't grow in my zone.

I’m pretty sure Heirloom will offer you a credit that you can use anytime. If what you want isn’t available I’d ask.

I will never not recommend Earth Angel although to be fair, I’m not really familiar with the others.

@ Ryan Coastal LA Zone 10b The credit is valid for 90 days. I can wait 2 more weeks and see if some of roses are back in stock but I want to plant the new rose before summer.

At least in colder zones, Edith's Darling is a small growing rose that is a front of the bed plant that wouldn't approach anything near 5X5'. I've never noticed much fragrance from Stars & Stripes Forever though I have a poor nose. You may have better results that I did for the Clements series of roses in zone 6, but when we were zone 5b none of that series overwintered well for me including Louise.

Of what you listed, I would join the recommendations for Earth Angel. It's reliably healthy, comfortably 5' tall (though perhaps a bit more narrow), very disease resistant to blackspot, and cane hardy in your zone. It blooms profusely all season but as others have mentioned the fragrance is mild at best. The same characteristics apply to Bliss Parfuma - even with the Parfuma in the name it's only mildly fragrant.

Most of the time we don't get everything we're looking for in a rose so you need to pick which of your characteristics is your highest priority. If you want a highly fragrant rose, those are more likely characteristics of old garden roses or some hybrid teas. Many of those will have different resistance to disease and/or shorter bloom cycles depending on the variety.

Deelish is a wonderfully fragrant rose. So are Sweet Mademoiselle and Bolero. All are very healthy in my garden and repeat well.

Omar, my first two at my last garden did not bloom the first year, had small blooms the second, and then just got better after that with bigger blooms and good repeat. At my current garden they started blooming the first year with good size blooms and repeat - partly I am a better rose grower now but I think more importantly the ones at my last garden were in complete shade in the afternoon until their third year when they were finally tall enough to peak over the (short) fence they were nexr to. All of them are own root as well.
