Pendant Lights over an island...what's the trend in 2024?

Any great ideas for lights anyone? I'm searching for pendant lights x 3 over a large island in a kitchen that has hob on it but otherwise is for seating.

We have marine blue units, wooden worktop on the island, marble/white worktop round the side, old farmhouse table and grey tiles on the floor. Handles in brushed chrome so could match that or my inclination is to go for black.

We do want to have soft lighting in the evenings over the island and to sit there for chatting etc so nothing that shines too much in line of vision.

Other lighting in the room is white and recessed or slightly protruding (but not pendant as the wires suggest)

great windows! I’d be tempted to go very spare and simple (small lamps are also fabulous in a kitchen at night)

Layered lighting... This might be considered a trend or it might be a new normal.

I went without pendants. I wanted to be able to be in the kitchen and see our tv during sport events and to socialize while cooking. But... I have many lights on dimmers and lighting for tasks, under cab, over cab, inside cabinets, recessed and accent lights for glass cabinets. I even have natural lighting because we have a skylight bringing the shine of the moon or the sun filling the space with light. Oh the word the masters use is Biophilic.

I find that the best thing I ever did was have lighting inside the cabinets when you open them. It is wonderful to be able to see what you have inside and the switch is motion activated. Why didn't I do this in my closets??? I still can just need to get around to it.

Dimmers are a huge thing for me. Sometimes we want mood lighting sometimes we need bright lights for cooking. Layered lighting will help your space function.. Now to think about form.

I see these kinds of lights in the renovations around my community. Those ugly recessed lights are being transformed into art

You have no room for seating at that island and if 2024 are you then planning to change in 2025, 2026???? You have no venting for the hop so anything hanging over it will need cleaning constantly . I can ahrdly see the space so maybe a good declutter to actually get a feel for the area.

thanks very much to La_La Girl and Boxerpal. really helpful (we have layered lighting and dimmers but nothing in the cupboards!). Patricia Colwell: we have seating at the far end and on the right for 4 stools, it is a large island by UK standards. We will have venting in the ceiling where that large rectangle is and the pendants hang down to the right of the hob, so not over it. And it's a mess because we are in the middle of doing it and the whole ground floor is compromised plus with dog, cats, lodger & child there are not many options here for a tidy up! I was asking to see if any new ideas for lighting, trends come and go so it's nice to check before buying..

I truly think the trend is whatever you like and find attractive for your room. I have been seeing a lot of these pendents lately. You seem to have an eclectic style with flat fronts and a vintage style table. Your windows and bones of your house seem contemporary. I think this style would go well with your wonderful mash-up of styles.

Don't know if this exposed bulb would glare too much for your taste or if a frosted bulb and dimmer will help enough. I do like the touch of gold interior with your blue and brass.

You can have an exposed bulb if you use something frosted (globe or bulb), which nixes the glare. Otherwise, go for a down-light that has a solid shade. Agree with others that there's no trend worth worrying about more than what works for you and your space.

It's worth being very picky about lighting, especially in kitchens. I like the very basic flushmounts in Boxerpal's first photo. Here's why:

    - they nearly disappear (feature lighting screams trendy and expensive to me)

    - they won't collect greasy dust that is so hard to clean off fixtures, especially so close to the range

    - they are incredible easy to change bulbs

    - they are simple, affordable and pretty timeless, available in many finishes

    - they won't collect dead bugs

    - if a year or two down the road you want to do something flashy and splashy once everything else is in place, your sunk cost is low and you can do that then.

It looks like you are well on your way to a beautiful and functional kitchen!

You could always do 2 large pendants and that way it may not impede your view toward the room that is beyond the island . We’ve got a 9-ft island and are using 2 fairly large pendants. The electrical plan called for 3, but hubby is quite tall and I didn’t want him to be constantly trying to look around the center pendant at the TV in the living room. As for style, it would depend on the overall style of your home, and any other fixtures you may already have in place.

I suggest you choose black pendant lights to match the marine blue cabinets and wooden island countertop, which will be more coordinated. Considering that you want to create a soft lighting atmosphere over the island, you can choose pendant lights with shades to avoid shining too much in the line of vision. Additionally, to coordinate with the other white lights in your room, you can choose black pendant lights with white interiors or white glass shades underneath. This not only provides sufficient lighting but also maintains the overall style of your room. I hope this is helpful! Professional home lighting offers you more choices.
