unequal drywall sides at box bay kitchen window:NEED TILE HELP

last modified: last year
  • Subway tile is going from counter to base of top cabinets
  • Not sure what to do on right side next to double oven cabinet. Should it be tiled or left as paint color.
  • I plan to NOT tile in the drywall returns and around the window as it feels too busy with the 2inch sla plantation shutters

Are you going to tile around the window to the same height as under upper cabinets?

The backsplash you removed dealt with that window space better than a subway tile will. I would go ahead with subway tile under the uppers, then switch to a counter material under the sash and around the corner.

If you really want tile all around, that’s fine too, you can use tile instead of counter material but the color will make the asymmetry more conspicuous.

Yep, subway tile under the cabinets. Short countertop material splash around the three sides of the sink, but nothing on the oven wall.

I know pictures can be deceiving, but are you sure your shutters are going to clear the faucet to open?

I agree just that piece of counter to fit under thewindow and IMO all the way across that wall the same and I probably would not do anything past the jut out on the right so no backsplash on that side wall.

Don't usually suggest this but in your case I will suggest taking the backsplash all the way up the wall around the window.

The cabinets should be designed to be held back from the corner the same amount, and that is at least 3” plus the projection of the crown molding. which you have left no room for here. They should NOT touch the ceiling like that. That is a big functional error. They need to be shorter, and smaller both. This is a BIG design clearance issue.

@eam44 I wasnt sure if i couldmix the granite backsplash with subway tile in other areas. My plan was to add the frame moulding to the bottom of the window and leave the dryway painted and exposed. between the bottom of the window and the counter. thoughts? Thank you so much

Well you could do that, but behind the sink is the one place you might really wish you hadn’t. There is more than average depth between the sink and the window so you’re not worried about water infiltration, but that counter is a horizontal surface and even 4 ounces of water spilled by a less careful, ”helpful” spouse/neighbor/child could soak the drywall and eventually ruin your cabinets. Even a 2” splash there would mean you never have to worry about that. Given all you are investing in this lovely space, it could be pennywise and pound foolish not to put something there.

As to what exactly you choose for that spot, it doesn’t have to be counter material, and it doesn’t have to be black, although i think that might look best. You could buy a few pieces of absolute black granite tile 2” x 12” bullnosed, or some black granite hexagon tiles, or a few sheets of black herringbone mosaic. Or you could do something completely out of the box, like trimming your window in moulding made of ceramic tile. If it reaches the counter and can be caulked, it’ll do the job. I have not seen this done, so please don’t chose that last idea, but you have a lot of options that can be beautiful and protect your investment.
