Need help to create a moody den

last year

Hello! I need help decorating this guest bedroom for use as a den. The size is a little larger than 10 x 12. Our house is open concept. I am using the closet as a “pantry“.

I'm looking for help with wall color, lighting, and additional furniture. The leather gold couch stays. Maybe the rug. I do not want a table in front of the couch. I will get new artwork for over the couch.

Colors in the home are taupe /royal blue/red orange pulled from a piece of artwork. The app will not allow me to upload more photos.

Thank you for suggestions! So excited to see ideas!

If you type "moody" into the Houzz search field, you will hit a number of stories with examples of moody decor. Some would likely translate to your space.

A floor plan would get you more constructive advice. Do you have other furniture you want to bring into the room? What will the room be used for? Social gatherings, reading space, work from home? Kids, adults?

  • last year

Thank you. I forgot to mention that the only planned furniture is a sideboard for storage. It will go on the same wall as the closet doors and will need to be about 54 inches long to fit nicely on that wall.
We use the room to do ironing, floor exercises, and laying out clothes for Travel. That’s about it. I need to keep the walkway from the door to the closet clear for getting into the pantry. I don’t want to be walking around a coffee table. Plus we keep that area open for floor exercises, yoga, etc. .

I feel there is opportunity for shelving, bookcases, certainly a pendant style ceiling lamp. Lighting beside the couch and a small table to the right of the couch on the window side.

I have added the room, layout, and a few more photos for information.

Suggestions to delete photos? I uploaded the wrong

Sorry, the app will not allow me to upload the correct photo layout. It keeps loading the ones above😞

From your description it sounds like an exercise room with some storage, not a den and not a room that needs a couch- why would you sit in this room?

What exactly is this space going to be? A opantry in a guest room not a great idea. Do you mean dark by "moody"

  • last year

Sounds like this is a storage, exercise, ironing, packing room -- correct? Is it also a sort of graveyard for furniture you don't want to get rid of but have not other place for like a sofa and sideboard? Do you want a bookcase in there because you have books or other items to store or are you going for some kind of display for the room?

When will you ever sit in here vs anywhere else? Why not just make this room what it is - storage, exercise, packing space? No sofa, no end tables. Is the sideboard a space you can use for packing and laying things out on? Why not just have it in this room along with a larger rug for exercising and maybe a little table or bench to put anything on that you need when you are working out?

So you do not want a den exactly. Waht you use the room for IMO needs to have good lighting not moody at all.

Hello! Hope I can clarify… The finished room in its new iteration will be a DEN. As mentioned, we have a couch and no other furniture for this room. (Items in the photo are temporary, ignore the chairs and table). I will add a sideboard/credenza once I find the correct dimensions and style. Looking for dark wood, top for styling, drawers for storage of heirlooms, glassware…
Looking to add: lighting, possible end table, art and a sideboard/credenza. This is right off the front door hall so it will be a den, not an exercise room. We have an exercise room in the basement but I still like to use the carpet for yoga.
I like the idea of darker walls to set a quiet space for reading, mediation. The closet will continue to hold the pantry items not needed in the kitchen because it is practical; That will not affect the room design.

Any other clarification I can provide? Enough info for suggestions of wall color, type of lighting and other elements? Grateful for ideas!

Ah ha! I can post the proper layout now😊

Paint the closet door and it's trim with the same paint as the walls. It will look less like a bedroom.

Let's not all get hung up on the name of the room and just think about what you want it to do.

    Functionally, storage and yoga.

Aesthetically I am guessing you don't want the room to appear oddly bare/unfinished since it's close to the front door. And you already have the sofa. Am I correct?

For a ”moody” den, something like BM Vintage Vogue could be a wall color to consider.

Here I used PPG Castle Stone- it’s similar

And you could bring in some sconces. Maybe battery operated. Some type of throw on sofa might also be nice. A faux fur could be a luxe addition, with your gold leather

Thank you for the tip about painting the doors and trim, the same colors as the walls. I was wondering about that.
I also like the idea of sconces. Am going to move the existing lithograph to another wall and purchase another piece of art as the couch is from the foyer.

Having said I like dark walls, we do have dark dining room walls which you can see in one of the photos above. I’m not sure about having two rooms so close together with walls that intense. Thoughts on that? This room is visible from the dining area, which is right off the foyer and the front entry.

Would much appreciate ideas for a ceiling light in a pendant chandelier style

Im now calling this the meditation room😊. My dog and I sit on the couch 🐶.

Hello Kendrah! Thank you for the detailed suggestions! I appreciate the photos of elements and paint suggestions. I'm going to try to do a mock up with your ideas.

A credenza with legs is a great tip so the room doesn't feel crowded by a larger piece of furniture. As the couch is large, a C table will also help keep the room from feeling furniture-heavy. Sconces were originally on this wall. Would you still consider a pendant where the ceiling light is along with sconces?

I was thinking the credenza would go on the closet side to balance the room with furniture on far side as opposed to across from the couch. It's a challenge finding a credenza that is about 54 inches wide, I'm finding. No rush however.

Thank you again for your thoughtful ideas!

Select the right rug for the room and you've halfway complete.

I like this Joanna Gaines rug in brown/green. I think it is a great backdrop for your leather sofa.

Is the dining room colour too dark for this room? Maybe a lighter shade of it? I like the harmony in colours since you see both rooms at the same time.

Start taping off furniture sizes on the floor to get a feel for placement. Better yet if you have folding tables, boxes, or other pieces of furniture you can move in here to give you an idea for size and placement of the credenza/side board.

If you place a 54" storage piece to the left of the pantry, how many inches will be to the left and right before you hit the corner or the pantry? It might feel a bit shoved in the corner and may also create a trapped feeling with the corner of the sofa. Look at your first pic and how the edge of the coffee table and sofa really cut off the pantry doors. I don't love the look of that. Makes the room feel jumbled.

There are some longer pieces that are only 18" deep and I think they would look fine across from the sofa because they won't protrude into the space much. This Crate and Barrel one is 18" deep. (Just as example, don't know that this is your taste.)

Room and Board has some pieces that are 50 and 54" wide. You can customize the wood, the top, leg material. Again, have no idea if these are your style. They are certain not mine!

You will find more narrow pieces if you look for entryway cabinets, bar cabinets, storage pieces. What do you want to store in here? You can also find a 54" dresser with deep drawers.

Yes, you can put a chandelier (is that what you mean by pendent?) and sconces in here. I can't tell you style so don't have suggestions to make. I wouldn't do anything too ornate but something where the shape reads well from when you walk into the house and peek into the room. Something circular would be nice with all of these rectangular pieces in the room.

Hello all! Having the discussion here with all your comments is helping me get closer to a vision for this room. Where I am now: the function of the room is a sitting room for meditation, yoga but as it is off the front entrance hall and the couch wall is visible from the main area of the house, the room must be up to the same standard in design as the rest of the house (not a storage or exercise room). Other homes of this same floorplan in our HOA use it as an office, library or den.

The leather couch is large (and comfy), I have scaled it on the room layout grid provided. There is plenty of room for the closet door clearance. There is also room for a small table on the right. The couch is the only furniture I have for that room at this time.

    New Furniture

I am now thinking that a tall Secretary rather than a horizonal sideboard will be more useful and a good visual fit for the short wall with the closet. I will use this to-be-purchased furniture to store heirloom glassware on the top shelves and tablecloths in drawers (otherwise I would have gone for shelves or a bookcase in that space). I am not at all an "antique person," but hoping a vintage piece can be found that is not too ornate. The wall next to the closet door is 63.5 inches long.

    Wall Behind Couch - Lighting/Artwork/Wallpaper?

I don't like this vertical artwork byitself over the couch. Would a sconce on either side of this art over the couch balance the space adequately AND provide sufficient light to read when sitting on the couch? Another option is to add a table lamp on the right side in addition to sconces but that isn't as "clean" of a visual as I would prefer. I'm also considering purchasing a different art piece(s) for that space.

Thoughts on wallpaper in a contemporary/transitional design behind the couch? I still like the idea of a bolder color on the walls in the room. There is no other green in the house (just the existing area rug). This wall is visible from the main area of the house from several vantage points. The interior house photo posted is looking out from the subject room entrance.

I anticipate the chandelier will be a key element in the room replacing the current ceiling flush mounted light. Looking for suggestions and a statement piece.

    Wall opposite Couch

I placed a couple of dining chairs on the long wall opposite a couch to get a sense of space. I will not put any furniture on that wall; it just doesn't feel right with the size of the couch so dominant in the room. A new furniture piece on the closet wall is the best option for the room to feel balanced. So, the long wall will be a blank wall for artwork or shelves??? Not sure what to do with that wall besides painting.

If someone here had the time to create a mockup of the room with these ideas- or if an easy app could be recommended where I could apply your suggestions for lighting etc, that would be much appreciated

Here's the kind of Secretary that has a drawer and shelves to display heirloom glassware. Too ornate for my taste but an idea for planning purposes.

Thanks again all for your time and thoughts on this project!

I love your idea for this room. We have something similar in our 2nd bedroom, and it’s my favorite space. It’s set up for a computer (shared with my husband, but this is mostly my space), sitting room, yoga room, and spare bedroom (loveseat sofa bed). I think you’re right to look for a china cabinet with height to add some vertical interest. The photo you show looks too old-fashioned to go with your leather sofa. Trying to find something that’s not too cottage-y. Would something like this work? It’s 66” wide— maybe too wide— and comes in several colors (Crate and Barrel).

  • last year

Brilliant! I really like the idea of a secretary with glass doors on the pantry wall. The narrowness and height suit that area well.

Room And Board - Comes in many finishes and hardware choices

Ballard - Comes in 8 colors

Do sconces or end table lamps. Not both. How wide is the sofa and how wide is the print currently hanging above it?

Yes to a chandelier. But can you point us in some direction as to your style? Do you want something with shades, with glass, contemporary, woven, metal, lantern like? Just have no sense of your style.

I'll take the perfect paint color over wallpaper any day.

  • last year

How do you plan to use this as a guest room? Is the sofa also a bed?

  • last year

Oh, the Room and Board Style is appealing. Will check it out. Your thought on paint over wallpaper noted. Thanks for posting all those examples!
My style is more minimalist but comfortable; Husband is more traditional. I'm posting a bedroom chandelier that we both like. You can see my style in the home photo originally posted. 😊

We have a separate guest bedroom so this meditation room will never be used for guest sleepovers😊

As requested, couch is 88 inches long and the artwork is 29 inches wide.

Is the artwork above the sofa an abstract? Could you turn it horizontally? (Blasphemy I know. My artist friends are shaming me in my mind.)

The light looks transitional to me. I'd do a search for transitional lighting. I get lost with that style and cannot wrap my mind around it for some reason. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Whatever you choose, I'd go for something that is a real focal point of the room. I feel like lighting fixtures are one more kind of art in a space.

  • last year

Hello again! The art over the couch is a signed lithograph so turning it not an option😊. I totally agree about the lighting! As this ceiling fixture will a key visual element seen from several vantage points outside of the room I need to choose carefully. I sense that a metal fixture will be better than say a fabric drum. Looking for some architectural appeal that fits with a transitional, not super modern style. The sconces and ceiling light should complement each other. You will see all upon entering the room. Feels daunting 🤪

We recently “color drenched” our soon to be den in our new house with Sherwin Williams Pewter Green. I’m in the same boat, trying to find furniture pieces and light fixtures that go, but I thought maybe you’d want to see something similarly painted to what was mentioned above 🙂 Good luck and I hope you find things you love!

(Forgot to mention the white trim at the bottom will soon be painted to match, as well)

Color drench the room walls and trim the same.
