It's either a deciduous plant with very glossy leaves that turn extremely late...or it's a broad leaved evergreen 🤣.

David, I am familiar with that plant. I knew the name at one time. I think it just holds onto leaves a bit later than most other deciduous plants. Wish I could remember the name.

I'm guessing that this is another American abbreviation/acromyn.

BLE = Broad-Leafed Evergreen. As opposed to Conifers or Deciduous shrubs/trees.

Before I retired, I worked in electronics, where just about every second term used, in conversation, was an acronym. Many of them meant totally different things dependant upon the project. Now my brain just goes blank.

American fringetree leaves and fruit. It IS in the olive family.

I'd never heard the expression or the acronym before coming to these forums. It's not a phrase I've come across over here. We tend to us the term 'evergreen' to mean precisely that, so we don't need to distinguish BLEs. Whereas I think in the US 'evergreen' tends to be used to mean conifer.

Because - among other reasons - with travel to the UK becoming more feasible for the middle classes, there was an interest in replicating the look of English gardens. This aspect of their history was discussed in a book I owned at the time: when I was a kid getting into plants, my parents bought me a black and white booklet produced by the New York Botanical Garden, circa 1950s or so, about the category of plant and using the term...but I can't find it with google at the moment. That book was where, for example, I first read about the Meserve hollies being bred to create a 'tougher' English holly. It was actually somewhat similar to the Harvard publication I linked above, except covering more plants, in more detail, and having more pictures. Alas it was part of a cache of my early gardening literature that I lost in a house fire when I was in 6th grade. (family and pets all survived, fortunately)

In the US, the term "Evergreens' tends to connote 'conifers' to most people, since just a lot of people live in zones too cold for a good number of broad-leafed evergreens. But they can grow pines, junipers, spruce, yews, etc., to offer green in the winter time. Therefore, to draw a distinction, some of us use the term 'broad-leafed evergreens' to refer to non-coniferous, yet evergreen, trees, shrubs, perennials.

That looks a lot like what has been termed variously as Chionanthus retusus var. serrulatus or Chionanthus retusus 'Serrulatus'. Here is a nice female specimen (2008 photos) at Swarthmore.
