Tapered cushion or rectangle on the bench by window

last year

Finally I’m at the place I can think about decorating!! The original to the house has a Built-in tapered to one corner and not sure if rectangle is better or follow the seat shape. Curtains will be triple pinch pleat kind and the fabric will be the same on the curtain and the bench seat cushion.

The traverse curtains rods are there before moved in, but I’m debating whether move them up between ceiling to top window frame. I think visually it will look better but not sure if moving this small amount of height warrants putting a big Molly bolts on the plaster wall.

The house is California bungalow built in 1910 but my taste is eclectic, some mid century, some traditional with pops of contemporary art frame etc.

"Curtains will be triple pinch pleat kind and the fabric will be the same on the curtain and the bench seat cushion"

There are inside-mount blinds which are out the way of someone sitting on the bench. Why do you also need curtains and wouldn't all that fabric get in the way of someone seated? Plus the shelves between the windows would prevent you from pulling back the curtains to completely expose the windows and brighten the room as much as possible. In short, why not just remove the curtain rods?

These blinds were newly placed and I think blinds serves a purpose differently than the curtain. I’m very close to my neighbors so for privacy/light control, I’ll keep the blinds. But I do not like the look of blinds and want to add some sheer linen curtain and the regular curtains for the look going after. I have adjacent living room set up like this and I quite like it. Below pic is progress picture, I would have not got blinds hindsight but it’s too late, all the blinds are in so I’ll keep it open during the day with double curtain setting.

There will be tensions pulley mounted on the wood panel so cords won’t dangling like the picture. But you brought good point about taking a consideration on how it all going to feel when one sits relation to curtains etc, so thank you for that!:)

You should definately get the seat cushion made to fit the shape of the seat.

    @Tara,
This! Is music to my ears! I wanted to do this but wasn’t sure.

Any strong feelings about one or the other on the current traverse rod placement?

Then I have a following questions afterwards.

Isn't the dark curtain in the photo outside the window glass. You won't be able to do that with these windows because of the shelves. I don't see how having that filmy fabric hanging down is going to make sitting in that window seat very comfortable...and you won't even be able to push it out of the way.

Too much "stuff" in that small area. With the drapes you are suggesting you won't really be able to use the window seat for sitting. What about a "faux roman shade" on those 3 windows?

    Sigh.. *
I think you guys are right, I’m glad I came here first!
Faux roman shade sounds like a right direction. Thank you everyone!

I don't know what's faux about roman shades, but these Bali Casual Classicshades are available in Flat and Looped styles. I'd think you'd want to use the Flat style -- with an inside mount -- to keep the shade as close to the glass as possible and minimize its protrusion into the seating area.

Try removing everything so you have a blank slate (except for the blinds for now). The rods should be removed - less is more!

If it were me, I’d skip custom roman blinds and bench cushion, as you don’t need either to create a cute little spot. Consider adding wireless sconces (vs the prints) which will make it really inviting.

This would still look great without the bench cushion, but you can always get later on if you actually sit there enough.

IMO too much of too much happening on that wall Drapes IMO no way on those windows and as for the cushion it needs to follow the shape of the seat . Sorry nothing MCM that I can see in that pic and that taper is just odd.
