Landscaping ideas for curb appeal

last year

Here's the situation:
The house has recently undergone significant renovations, including interior updates and some exterior improvements.
I want to enhance the curb appeal with new landscaping and concrete work.
Concrete Work:
I'm considering ideas from the front door to walkway to drive
way im thinking about using stamped concrete for a more decorative look, but I'm also open to other suggestions! Or maybe just add more dirt and plant flowers in the open space next to the concrete front step.

Pics are confusing - is that porch gone as shown in 1st & 2nd pic? Is another being rebuilt? If not, will concrete work include new & much wider cement steps from front door?

    The front porch is gone

Ok. Are you thinking of doing what the white house next door has for their steps? Looks like it has stamped concrete patio that also serves as walkway. What condition is your driveway in & is it in budget for replacement? Appears your yard has a bit of slope to it while next door is perfectly flat. It would help if you add another pic of current look taken from farther away from house - middle of street.

The step isn't even centered on the door so don't design around keeping it.

Here is a modern idea for a new deck porch. I wouldn't use a built-in sofa, so make believe it's just a flat deck.

You need to address the condition of the siding and the roof before you move on to landscaping.

@Eileen- I like the flat deck idea, I was thinking of either replacing the siding with a soft green vinyl or repairing the wood siding and painting over it with a soft green.

Repair the siding and Paint will be around 5k

all new vinyl siding is around 8-9k

aThe roof is not in bad condition just soft wash should do the trick.

With a deck, you can build right over the step. Of course, you'd need to decide that before planning a walkway to the driveway.

I'm looking for more photos to help you visualize but it's hard to find photos of ranch-style houses with simple front decks. They show ones with multiple steps or pergolas built over the deck.

Oh, as far as green siding/paint. With a large lawn such as yours, it can be a lot of green! Add in the evergreen shrubs that you'll want to add to the foundation. .

Edge and pressure wash the driveway. New front door.

I personally wouldn't hang out on a deck in my front yard so I would upgrade the entry with a wider concrete stoop and a wide, gracefully curved walkway to the driveway.

The landscaping here is too messy and cluttered for my taste but the photo does show a good walkway.

A deck is just a wide front porch without a roof. Can be any width and length.

This is the standard way to design the front of a ranch house.

In this article from This Old House, they call your home a flat ranch. They show a photoshop of an open porch and pergola that gives the home the illusion of a front porch. Good tips here!

I'd put in a wide step/stoop, flank it with some shrubs, and do a path to the driveway. I'd look at the condition of the siding, first. Any painter or other worker working on the exterior is going to stomp on any plantings, so I'd do the painting and other work first.

I you aren't going to paint the siding, you definitely need to do the shutters and the screen door.

@Eileen Excellent article! Great find. Thank you so much. With article you make me want to change the siding on the house to vinyl lol

I would for the simple reason that when you add new, the old looks really, really old in comparison.

I like the upper boards and lower shingles mixed siding and don't know why it's all the same color. I think the wood siding is charming so I would keep it and do a two-tone with the different woods. A soft blue on top and a soft brown or gray on the lower portion.

I think with the style of house, a simple concrete walkway would be appropriate and period to the house. But I do like the idea suggested of a deck as a front porch...just for some depth at the front door.

Line the driveway with flowers to hide the broken edges.
