You aren't going to be able to paper or wainscot over that. You would have to rip it out and start over from drywall up to make it feel more in place with an 1800's house.

Very 70’s bachelor pad groovy. Not too much fake marble. Just too much ugly fake marble. People really should stop shopping at discount and seconds tile places.

You can tackle it by planning a complete rip out and redo of the whole. With better design help than they had.

In addition to being an unattractive room, that floor looks super-slippery. I'd want the marble gone -- every square inch -- but that's a very expensive proposition.

I don't believe that is marble ... looks like 24 x 48 porcelain with a marble-look pattern and most likely wasn't an expensive porcelain tile.

It's clearly not real marble, as evidenced by the many repeats of the same pattern. But not sure what difference that makes.

I'd think about the foundation of the house and the placement of this room in relation to any structural supports. Can your house, over time, hold the weight of this mass of hard surface slabs, as well as the trough of a tub?

I lived in an 1850s home and the former owners installed a new bathroom close to the second floor where the staircase was and subsequently where the least amount of structural support was. We ended up having to put extra supports in our basement and do costly structural work.

All old houses begin to sag, but you can be mindful of how much weight you put where to slow down the process. Tear this out and start a new. Yes, it might be wasteful, but that was the former owner's fault, not yours.
