Stuck on updating the exterior of my home

last year

My long bungalow has orangy brick and plastic beige/brown siding that I can't stand. I'm looking ast updating the siding, thinking shingles, or board and batten or maybe local stone (that is used on my fireplace. I'll add a photo of the fireplace so you can see it - I could only find a Christmas photo with my pup and a old reno pic) But would the stone look good where the now flesh coloured plastic siding is?

deep down I think I want shingles or board and batten...

Any thoughts on materials, and colours? Maybe pull out the roof line above the front entry to create more of a focal point? I have new doors that have mullions in the glass. I hop eto change the windows some day too. Any thoughts are very welcome!

You already have brick siding, would not add stone.

What budget are you looking at?

Why are there two front doors? Is this a duplex?

I wouldn't choose the stone either, better off with board&batten. You already have brick and the pavers, so another textured finish would be too many. I'd consider removing the shutters, and maybe a green-gray color for the siding?

no to the stone. board & batten yes, since you can do verticle without a seam

    No to another stone.

Your house is cute. Here are some suggestions for a couple of easy and inexpensive updates.

I'd pull out that hedge in your planting area and put a small ornamental tree there. The hedge is repeating the horizontal lines of the steps and the roof. You need to mix it up a little.

I'd also get rid of the shutters, they are too small for the windows and clutter up the facade.

Thank you all. There are two front doors is a common thing around here. One is the 'side door' that leads to the mudroom and 1/2 bath (situated behind the kitchen) The side door is where deliveries and family enter.

You have all confirmed my wish to have B&B or shingels. Now the question is the colour. I'd love natural shingles for a cottagy look (we are on the Rideau River outside of Ottawa.)

Do you think I could do a colour for the B&B in the front entry area and shingles in the gables?

Weird, the main photo I wanted to send didn't upload. This should help. And yes, I can't wait to get rid of that street light and replace it with something more modern. lol

You have enough visual interest already with the brick and paving, so do both the gable and the siding the same, in a dark colour. Paint the downspout the same dark colour.

I would remove the shutters and add railings to both sets of steps.

Somehow to me, the roof, looks to be not right color to go with the house itself. Are you planning on replacing the roof. No stone, board and batten would be very nice.

Wonderful, thank you all. I was planning to remove the shutters. I like the idea of a darker colour for the gables and siding. Thanks!!
